Neck spasms can occur when you sleep in an uncomfortable position or watched a movie in the back row and craned your neck down to try and focus. Neck spasms can occur from time to time or they can be a regular occurrence.
Instructions
1. Confirm that you are having neck spasms instead of some other kind of muscle problem. Spasms in the neck happen without warning and uncontrollably. After using your neck muscles, they are weak. This weakness causes them to firm up and to cause pain.
2. Rub some balm onto your neck. There are many choices out there, and in a pinch you can even use different kinds of oils. Medicated balms contain menthol and other ingredients that will cause your neck to heat up. This may be enough to relax the muscles on their own.
3. Stretch your neck. This will loosen up the muscles a little and get the blood flowing. Rotate your head down to your right shoulder and pull it as far as you can. Roll your head downward and hold it. Continue to rotate your neck all the way around.
4. Squeeze the many muscles in your neck between your thumb and fingers. Spend some time rubbing your whole neck, and then isolate each of the different muscle groups. Focus on the ones that are really giving you a problem.
5. Alternate long strokes with short ones and heavy pressure with light.
6. Invest in one of the many machines that will rub your neck for you. These can mimic the movements of shiatsu or Swedish massage. Using a massage machine can also help you relax while it works on your neck muscles, since you're not bending and stretching your arm muscles to reach the area that needs your attention.
