Essential Oils In The Treatment Of Hair Loss

Essential oils in the treatment of hair loss may be useful in increasing circulation to the scalp, which may stimulate hair growth.

Scalp Massage

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, using rosemary, lavender, thyme, or cedarwood essential oil for scalp massage may help increase circulation. You can use a single oil or make a blend of any of the oils. Dilute about 10 drops of essential oil in a tablespoon of carrier oil such as vegetable, olive, or nut oil.

Essential Oil Massage Blend

For a scalp massage blend, the Penn State Hershey Health Information Library suggests using three to four drops each of peppermint, rosemary, and sage in one tablespoon of carrier oil. Massage gently into your scalp once or twice a day.

Research

The essential oils of thyme, lavender, rosemary, and atlas cedarwood were looked at for hair loss in the study Randomized Trial of Aromatherapy: Successful Treatment for Alopecia Areata. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, causing hair to fall out in small, round patches. The study concluded that aromatherapy is a safe and effective treatment.

Male Pattern Baldness

Aromatherapy for Dummies notes that for male pattern baldness, essential oils will probably only slow the rate of hair loss. The book recommends this formula: 1/2 cup aloe vera gel, two tablespoons apple cider vinegar, one tablespoon jojoba oil, and 25 drops rosemary essential oil. Shake well and massage a few drops into scalp for ten minutes every night.

Cautions

If you use medications applied to the scalp, such as Minoxidal, ask your health care provider about possible drug interactions before using essential oils. If you have high blood pressure, use rosemary essential oil with caution as it may raise blood pressure in some people.
