Cope With A Child With Dwarfism

There are many different diseases that cause dwarfism. However most dwarfism is caused by a disorder called achondroplasia. Children do not grow beyond approximately 4 feet. Although they have an average size truck they have short arms and legs. Some children will have bowed legs and a disproportionally large head. A parent who has a child with dwarfism can do several things to help the child deal with their short stature.

Instructions

1. Educate yourself about dwarfism. Talk with your child's pediatrician about any medical complications that may be caused by the dwarfism such as sleep apnea, crowded teeth and frequent ear infections.

2. Ask about treatments. Depending on the type of dwarfism your child has, some treatments may be available. Your child's doctor can provide you with information on treatments such as hormone therapy and limb lengthening surgery. Keep in mind not every treatment will be appropriate for every child.

3. Make necessary changes to your home. It's essential a child with dwarfism learn to be independent just like every other child. Make things accessible to the child such as doorknobs, sinks, toilets and light switches.

4. Encourage a child to participate in activities other children do. Help instill a sense of confidence in your child by allowing him to try new activities and do things for himself. Don't let your child's short stature prevent him from setting goals and working to achieve them.

5. Discuss the possibility of teasing with your child. Some children with dwarfism may experience teasing from other children. Encourage your child to discuss how she feels and seek professional counseling if needed. If teasing gets to be a huge problem talk with the teachers at your child's school to work on solutions.

6. Contact Little People of America which is a nonprofit organization which provides support to children and adults with dwarfism. The organization has social events and can provide information on resources in your community. They also have information on where home modification devices and appropriate size furniture can be purchased.
