Chiropractic technicians or assistants perform a variety of patient care and administrative tasks in the offices of chiropractors. These include checking patient vital signs, developing X-rays, answering phones and updating patient records. To gain the skills necessary for success as a chiropractic technician typically requires a post-secondary education. A small number of schools in California offer such programs, preparing students for clinical and clerical work in chiropractors' offices through classroom coursework and hands-on training.
IPPT Career School
Located in North Hollywood, IPPT Career School is a private, for-profit school offering courses relating to physical therapy, massage and chiropractic medicine. The college offers a chiropractic assistant program requiring 300 hours of training and grants a certificate of completion. Students study CPR, cranial-sacral therapy, deep tissue massage, medical terminology, patient care and therapeutic stretching. A second, 720-hour training program combines the chiropractic assistant course with instruction in manual therapy, which qualifies graduates for certification as a massage therapist in California. Sacramento County Regional Occupational Group
Founded in 1968, Sacramento County Regional Occupational Group is a unit of the Sacramento County Office of Education that provides job training from its Career Center in Mather. The school's chiropractic assistant program covers both clinical and administrative topics for technicians. Requiring one year of study, the program includes lessons in medical terminology, insurance billing, vital sign monitoring, physical therapy, X-ray development, CPR, first aid and patient testing. Prior to graduation, students complete an internship in a chiropractor's office. The program is free, although students must pay for books and materials. The program focuses primarily upon massage therapy techniques, but does not qualify graduates for California massage therapy licensure.
