Reduce Lead Exposure

Lead poisoning is a very serious and disturbingly common health problem among children, especially among babies and toddlers who live in older houses, near construction projects, or in polluted areas. Since it's difficult to treat lead poisoning, prevention is by far the most important consideration. Serious lead remediation projects often require professional assistance, but there are some steps you can take at home to reduce lead exposure.

Instructions

1. Look out for lead paint. Almost any paint from before the 1970s could possibly be lead paint, but flaking lead paint has a tell-tale rectangular-flaking pattern. This paint is often found on walls, windowsills and old toys and housewares. It's especially dangerous if it's flaking, because flakes can be eaten by babies or ground into dust. Removing lead paint can create even more of a hazard as it gets broken up, so if you find some, consult a skilled professional about removing it safely.

2. Check your plumbing. Some old houses may have lead pipes, and copper plumbing often involves lead solder. If you have lead pipes, it's best to replace them. If you do not replace the pipes, get a good water filter and/or run water for several minutes before drinking from the tap, which should reduce lead exposure.

3. Reduce lead exposure by cleaning your house regularly. Vacuum thoroughly (with a HEPA filter vacuum if possible), then dust and mop with damp cloths and mops. Keep the cleaning supplies in a safe place, and rinse cloths and mops thoroughly, because the dust you clean up can contain lead.

4. Keep children clean. Kids should wash their hands before eating, to remove lead dust and also after playing outside where they may encounter a polluted environment. Toys should be cleaned regularly. Only recently washed items that don't fall on the floor should be allowed for chewing.

5. Help children eat a healthy diet, including lots of protein, iron and vitamin C. These nutrients help the body to eliminate small amounts of lead exposure as quickly as possible.
