Acne & Aromatherapy Oils

Aromatherapy oils may be able to help with acne.

Acne is a skin condition that is usually associated with teenagers. The symptoms of acne are pimples, blackheads, cysts, and sometimes even scars and lumps on the skin. Despite its prominence in adolescents, most people experience acne at some point in their lives and everyone is susceptible. There are a plethora of acne treatments out there, from over-the-counter lotions to prescription medications. Alternative medicine is also being used to treat acne in the form of aromatherapy oils, or essential oils.

Aromatherapy Basics and Acne Treatment

Aromatherapy is often used to soothe, calm or energize by inhaling the scent of essential oils. Many of these essential oils also provide effective skin care when applied directly to the skin. When treating acne with aromatherapy oils, remember that while all essential oils have beneficial attributes, only certain types are helpful for acne. Always observe the precautions with the given oil, and never use undiluted oils on your skin.

Australian Medical Trial

In 1990, the Medical Journal of Australia published a clinical trial reporting the effects of tea tree oil, a popular aromatherapy oil, versus benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of acne. Using 124 participants, half were treated using tea tree oil and half were treated with benzoyl peroxide. Both methods were effective in cutting down acne outbreaks and blemishes. Tea tree oil participants experienced less side effects but also took longer to show results.

How Tea Tree Oil Works

Tea tree oils stop the growth of bacteria and microbes which cause acne. The oil has antiseptic and anti-microbial properties that lead to the clearing and unclogging of pores. Tea tree oils can also heal scars and can help to remove acne spots which leads to healthy, supple skin.

Other Oils for Acne Treatment

Several other oils beside tea tree oils have been shown to be effective in treating acne. Sandalwood oil has mild astringent properties that can help tighten your pores as well as clean them. Chamomile oil is an herbal remedy that has excellent antiseptic and antibiotic properties that, when applied to the skin, can eliminate bacteria from your face and lower the possibility of returning acne. Peppermint oil has a nice, fresh smell and contains menthol, a property that can dry up current pimples and improve oily skin.

Using the Oils

Wavelengths Natural Health offers a recipe that combines essential oils for a practical application for your acne. The recipe includes five drops geranium oil, seven drops lavender oil, seven drops atlas cedarwood oil, 12 drops tea tree oil and 1/4 oz. jojoba oil. Combine the ingredients in a small glass vial, using an orifice reducer. Use a cotton swab to apply the solution directly to your acne-affected area.
