Remain Calm During Presentations

Remain Calm During Presentations

We'd all like to be the one who gives the killer presentations and comes off with poised perfection. However, public speaking scares most Americans more than almost anything else, including death. But in the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." With that in mind, consider some strategies for remaining calm during a presentation.

Instructions

1. Begin working on your presentation as soon as you receive the assignment. Do not put it off until the last minute. The first step to remaining calm during a presentation is being confident in the quality of your work.

2. Research your subject thoroughly. Knowing your subject inside and out will help you answer questions that might otherwise take you off guard and interrupt your flow. Think of questions from your audience as a way to highlight your expertise on a subject and inform your colleagues about the importance of your work.

3. Practice. Do not give your presentation for the first time during the meeting. Give your presentation to a coworker, friend, spouse or even your kid and listen to his feedback. Adjust your presentation to meet his concerns. If all else fails, record yourself and watch the tape (but don't be too hard on yourself when you review it). Most likely you'll notice that you're speaking too fast or fidgeting. Take note of this and remind yourself to slow down and use your hand to accentuate your point, not distract from it.

4. Dress for success. It sounds cliche, but the way you look affects the way others perceive you. Knowing you look good will boost your confidence, which in turn will help you remain calm. Select a few outfits the night before and look at yourself in a full length mirror. Ask yourself, "What does this outfit say about me?" Wear the one that gives the most authoritative and professional vibe.

5. Show up early and get comfortable in the conference room, on the stage or wherever you'll be presenting. Familiarizing yourself with the space will help put you at ease. You'll know how many steps you'll need to cross or how far away the projector should be from the wall or where to watch for exposed cords on the floor. Knowing what to expect allows you to focus on delivering your message. Being confident is the key to remaining calm during a presentation.
