Identification
Hemangiopericytoma is a condition that results in a tumor located traditionally in the pelvis or abdominal area. While it is possible for the resulting tumor to be cancerous, it is more common for it to be benign. It is an extremely rare condition that affects less than 1% of the American population. It is a condition that can cause severe complications if not caught in its early stages. Advanced stages of hemangiopericytoma require surgery to remove the healthy tissue around the site of the tumor along with the tumor itself. In some cases, if the tumor has spread enough, this could result in the amputation of the affected limb.
Common Abdominal Symptoms
A hemangiopericytoma tumor located near the abdominal area can result in very noticeable physical symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and severe abdominal pain accompanied by flatulence or belching. Heartburn and abdominal cramps are also symptoms of hemangiopericytoma. It is important to distinguish these symptoms from other more common abdominal symptoms such as those of a negative reaction to medication or as the symptoms of an intestinal blockage.
Leg and Pelvic Symptoms
In the leg or pelvis area, hemangiopericytoma grows in the soft tissue and smooth muscle surrounding the area, so it may be some time before the tumor begins to show signs of growth by pressing on the skin and causing a lump. In the meantime, some of the symptoms of a pelvic hemangiopericytoma tumor are an unexplained limp, a pain or soreness in the legs or pelvis and a noticeable problem when the person attempts to use his feet.
Pulmonary Effects
In some cases a hemangiopericytoma tumor can begin to put pressure on the major arteries that run through the pelvis, and this can lead to a series of symptoms that involve the circulatory system. These symptoms include profuse and unexplained sweating, a severe cough that could lead to coughing up blood, persistent pain and difficulty in breathing. It is common for these symptoms to be misdiagnosed as a circulatory problem or heart disease.
Urinary Symptoms
The actual hemangiopericytoma growth itself is painless. What causes the pain is the pressure the tumor puts on nerves and blood vessels as it grows. When a pelvic hemangiopericytoma tumor develops, it can cause a series of urinary symptoms that should be reported to a doctor immediately. These symptoms include retention of urine due to a urinary blockage or constipation.
