Fix the Windows XP Setup Loop
Even when a Microsoft Windows XP installation goes smoothly, it can be tedious as you wait for the operating system to finally complete the process. But when you run into the notorious "looping" problem that can occur during the Windows XP setup process, that tedium can turn into pure frustration as the OS prevents the setup from continuing. This problem typically is accompanied by errors that indicate that Windows setup cannot continue because certain Windows components cannot be installed or that there are errors with certain devices. With some basic troubleshooting, you can usually solve the looping problem.
Instructions
1. Remove the Windows XP setup disc from your optical drive. Shut down your PC. You may need to perform a hard shutdown by holding PC's power button until the system turns off.
2. Inspect the disc for dust or smudges. If you find dust or smudges, use a soft, lint-free cloth and wipe from the middle of the disc outward to clean it. If the disc is scratched or gouged, skip to Step 4.
3. Turn on the PC and insert the setup disc. If the setup loop occurs again, go to Step 4.
4. Contact Microsoft to obtain a new setup disc. Alternately, borrow a Windows XP setup disc from someone else, but be sure to use the registration number that is printed on your disc's case.
5. Complete the Windows XP setup using the new (or borrowed) setup disc.
