You can kill lice at home.
Lice are nasty little bugs that can take over your head and hair. Removing them through traditional store-bought methods is a possibility, but there are also several home remedies that you can try.
Mayonnaise
Yes, you can eliminate head lice by using mayonnaise. Do not use mayo that has just come out of the refrigerator, because it will be much too cold. Cover the hair with the mayo and then place a shower cap over the hair. Allowing it to sit like that for a couple of hours will destroy the lice already there and kill off any eggs. Then remove the shower cap and immediately throw it away so the lice cannot spread. Thoroughly shampoo the hair.
Petroleum Jelly
Petroleum jelly is an alternative to mayonnaise. Apply it in the same way and let it sit. Remove by applying baby oil and rubbing it through your hair. Squeeze out your hair and then shampoo it as many times as needed with dishwashing liquid and water. You will probably need to wash it at least three times. Again, make sure you throw out the shower cap.
Natural Shampoo
Mix five teaspoons of carrier oil with five drops each tea tree essential oil, rosemary essential oil, lavender essential oil, peppermint essential oil and eucalyptus essential oil. Add a bit of regular shampoo. Apply the mixture and let it sit under a shower cap for at least one hour. After you rinse it out, the lice will be dead.
Aftercare
Even if you think you have killed all the lice and their eggs, you still need to take one more step in order to ensure that they are all dead. You will have to rinse your hair with vinegar a few times in order to kill off all the eggs. Once you are done you can always comb through and inspect your hair for lice, nits and eggs. Lice are often quite visible. If they do not die after the first try, keep trying until they are gone.
