Whether you find it hard to come upon a perfume you like, can't afford the often hefty price tags or even find yourself with skin irritated by synthetic additives, a homemade perfume may be just what you need. Even better, when you make your own perfume, you make your own unique scent not available in stores.
Making Your Perfume Base
Start with a base, then choose your fragrance oils according to your taste. Add 1/2 tsp. glycerin to 4 tbsp. vodka in your fragrance bottle. When you add your fragrance, use an eye-dropper and add about five to 10 drops of fragrance to the base. If you use more than one scent, you can adjust the number of drops of each so that each scent has the dominance you want in your perfume. For example, if you want to use three scents, you could add six drops of a strong and earthy scent, followed by seven drops each of two lighter scents.
Scent Pairings
Experiment with one or a combination of scents until you find one you like. Fragrance oils scented with lime, orange, lemon, lemongrass and grapefruit are great for anyone who enjoys tropical- or citrus-scented perfumes. For an herbal-scented perfume, try chamomile, rosemary, lavender, peppermint, sage and angelica fragrance oils. If you like floral scents, try jasmine, rose, ylang-ylang or geranium.
In case you need inspiration, here's a list of scents that are commonly used together and seem to work: chamomile and lavender, cypress and rosemary, rosemary and sage, passionflower and ylang-ylang, orange and grapefruit, and cucumber and lemon.
