Moisture attracts mosquitoes.
A mosquito's life cycle is seven days, and the larvae and pupae cycle of the mosquito is aquatic. The best way to begin mosquito prevention is to remove possible breeding grounds. Larvae need standing water to prosper, so remove items that retain standing water or construct ways to keep the water moving. Kill any larvae before they have a chance to develop, and look for shaded rest areas used by adult mosquitoes and eliminate them.
Remove Breeding Grounds
Tire swings can hold water.
Anything that has the potential to retain freestanding water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Keep all outdoor pots, pans and containers empty. Mosquitoes will even lay eggs in a bottle cap that has standing water. Make sure all gutters drain completely; fill any holes that may catch and hold water; and keep un-mounted tires covered so they will not accumulate water. Mosquitoes also use untenanted birdbaths, plastic toys and pet water bowls as a nursery for eggs.
Prevent Stagnant Water
Mosquitoes lay eggs in stagnant water.
The mosquito looks for stagnant water to lay her eggs. To prevent stagnant water in outdoor landscaping that has water such as ponds, install devices to circulate the water on a regular basis. Drill a small drain hole in hanging tire swings and the bottom of outdoor grills. Open drain plugs in the bottom of boats and air conditioners. Keep drainage ditches clear of debris so water will not back up and become stagnant.
Adult Resting Sites
Adult mosquitoes rest and congregate in cool moist areas. Prevent the adults from having access to these places by regular mowing and trimming bushes. Cover access to the underside of porches, patios and crawlspaces with mosquito nets. Slope areas in the yard that have the potential to collect water, as this will allow constant drainage. At least once per week, completely empty and clean birdbaths and other landscape items that hold water. In addition, make sure down spouts do not clog and retain water.
Pesticides
Pesticides are available for killing larvae and adult mosquitoes, however, take care when using them. Do not use larvae pesticides in water that is accessed by pets and wildlife. Make sure the labels on adult pesticides indicate they are safe for animals if pets occupy the yard. The best prevention to the spread of mosquitoes is to prevent them from having access to resting places and places to lay eggs.
