"Hearing things?"
Tinnitus is a common condition experienced by as many as one in five adults. For most people it is not a severe problem and goes away or is managed without treatment. For those who are more severely affected by tinnitus, seeking treatment through conventional or alternative means, including chiropractic, is an option.
Identification
Tinnitus is ringing or other noise in the ears that is not caused by an external source. Tinnitus is a symptom of an underlying condition, and is not a "disease" in and of itself.
Causes
Tinnitus can be caused by a buildup of earwax, allergies or sinus infections, foreign matter in the ear, reaction to medications, and hearing loss due to age or exposure to loud noise.
Usual Treatments
Medical practitioners treat tinnitus by treating its cause, such as removing earwax, prescribing antihistamines for allergies or switching medications.
Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a health care discipline concerned with the nervous and musculoskeletal system and its disorders. Chiropractors primarily practice spinal manipulation, but might also prescribe herbs, massage and exercise.
Chiropractic Treatments
Chiropractors use a variety of treatments for tinnitus. The most common is performing adjustments to the cervical spine (neck adjustments). Other methods used by chiropractors include myofascial therapy (a therapy that uses direct pressure and stretching to connective tissue) and prescribing herbs such as ginko biloba.
