Huntington's Disease is an illness that severely affects the nervous system and was first identified as a genetic condition by scientist in 1993. Also referred to as “Huntington's Chorea,” it causes significant loss of coordination and dramatically reduced mental capacity and is generally passed from parents to their children. Without treatment, other complications can occur. Symptoms of Huntington's Disease include twitching of the arms and legs and abnormal eye movement. 1. Be educated. Try to learn as much about Huntington's Disease as you can. Go to the library, a hospital, online or talk with medical reporters, specialists and other medical professionals. Medical journals have a lot of information about current studies and medical breakthroughs. Huntington's Disease is a progressive disorder and current research suggests there may be ways to inhibit the gene that causes the disease. Once you have read them, then go to a medical reporter or doctor with a list of questions in mind. The more you know about the disease, the better equipped you will be to increase the lifespan of someone with Huntington's Disease.
2. Learn your history. Huntington's Disease is passed from parents to their children. Talk with family members and friends about your concerns. Some people simply choose to be ignorant of medical circumstances due to fear.
3. Get tested early. A simple blood test can determine whether or not you carry the gene that causes Huntington's Disease. You can increase the lifespan of someone with the Huntington's Disease by trying to inhibit its progress. It may be even possible for the gene to be literally “turned off.,” if the disease is caught early enough. Scientists are also trying brain implants in monkeys, as well.

5. Manage the disease. It may be devastating for someone to learn they have Huntington's Disease, especially if they know their children will probably have it, too. The trick to increase lifespan for them or even their kids, by managing the disease properly. This includes getting regular check ups, following treatment regimes and taking medication, as prescribed. Medications are often prescribed to reduce muscle twitches, for example.
