Foods with cholesterol
Lipid metabolism is a poorly understood area of medical research. In addition, physicians note that less than half of those prescribed with statin drugs continue to take them over the long term. Therefore, doctors are currently examining less invasive techniques for lowering cholesterol, including common familiar dietary items such as coffee and caffeine.
Caffeine Protection
Michael Eades, a family practice physician in Arkansas, states that the data in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that caffeine intake is more effective than statin drugs in preventing heart disease in certain people. Those who experience the most benefit are older adults who are not presently experiencing any cardiovascular illness and who drink four cups of coffee a day.
Caffeine Disadvantages
In an animal study with caffeine detailed in the Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs and Therapy, Yumei Ye and Ghassan H. Abu Said showed that statins were able to protect against tissue death during heart attack, whereas caffeine intake in the presence of statins was not able to protect against tissue damage after heart attack.
Further Study Required
In another article published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs and Therapy, Niels P. Riksen and Derek J. Hausenloy say areas of further study include the need to examine genetic types of those who drink coffee, the way caffeine is measured in the bloodstream, and the possible protective effects of the use of statins immediately after heart attack.
Caffeine and Pioglitazone
In a human study, Thomas A. Hughes and Frankie Stentz showed that caffeine in combination with ephedrine and pioglitazone, an anti-diabetic drug, was effective against cholesterol levels in mildly overweight patients. This is supported by the data that caffeine may help prevent diabetes in some cases.
Flu protection
The World Intellectual Property Organization cites a method for the prevention of the flu that combines statins with caffeine in order to protect against various strains of the flu.
