Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, more commonly known as ADHD, afflicts both children and adults. This disorder manifests itself as inattentiveness, elevated levels of activity and impulsiveness. Most people display symptoms of ADHD before they reach seven years of age. 1. Eat fresh, natural foods. Chemical additives in processed and dyed foods are believed to contribute to ADHD. Fresh foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains have been shown to improve ADHD symptoms.








2. Stay away from sugar. People with ADHD do not process sugar as well as those who do not have the disorder. As a result, sugar leads to elevated hyperactivity. Cut down or wholly eliminate sugar from your diet.


3. Get adequate amounts of zinc, iron and magnesium daily. Kids with ADHD are often shown to be lacking in these essential vitamins. Avoid soft drinks which interferes with the body's ability to absorb magnesium.








4. Eat salmon, trout or sardines twice a week to get adequate fatty acids. A deficiency in fatty acids has been shown to increase ADHD symptoms.


5. Consider herbal remedies to treat ADHD. Skullcap has been shown to calm the nervous system, thereby decreasing hyperactivity. Chamomile encourages relaxation and gingko biloba improves focus. Gotu kola has been shown to be particularly effective in treating ADHD in children. Improvements in concentration have been noted in those kids who take the herb.
