Keep Hands From Chapping

It's easier to prevent chapped hands than to rehydrate them once they are dry.

When colder weather seems on the way, it's not too early to take steps to keep your hands from getting rough and chapped because it is easier to prevent chapping than to treat hands once they are chapped. Here are some easy tips shared by Diana Bihova, M.D. in the "Doctor's Book of Home Remedies."

Instructions

1. Avoid putting your hands in hot water, especially with harsh chemicals. If necessary, wear rubber gloves with cotton gloves inside if you need to scrub dishes or wash something else in harsh cleansers. Try to use long handled brushes when possible to keep hands out of the hot water and chemicals as much as possible.

2. Avoid soaping your hands with harsh soaps. Using a soap, such as Dove, which is part cold cream for a gentler cleaning, will aid in not drying out your hands. When you wash your hands continually, try to avoid scrubbing the backs of your hands. The skin is more delicate on the backs of hands, so try to concentrate on cleaning the palms.

3. Use a humidifier in the home because your body moisturizes from the inside out.

4. Double lotion your hands. Place a layer of lotion on hands, then minutes later lotion again. Coat hands with Vaseline or shortening at night and place cotton gloves on before going to bed to soften your hands overnight. Always lotion your hands before placing gloves on and going outside in inclimate weather.
