Spices That Help You Breathe

Adding some cayenne pepper to your chili can spice it up and help you breathe.

If you're having trouble breathing, you may want to try natural methods to relieve your problem rather than heading to the doctor. Whether your breathing problems are from a cold, sinus infection or asthma, you'll find that there are spices to help you breathe. Used correctly, you'll be feeling better in no time.

Coriander

Use coriander to help with breathing difficulties that arise from allergies or hay fever. Try recipes that incorporate the spice, such as a warm curry dish, chili, stew or sausage.

Anise

If you are congested from a cold, make an anise tea by steeping anise seeds in boiling water and then straining before you drink. You'll also find commercial herbal teas that are supposed to help breathing feature anise as a main ingredient if you want something quick and easy.

Garlic

Garlic can help when you have problems breathing due to chest congestion. Roast several cloves of garlic until they are soft and then mash them. Add the mashed garlic on top of toast.

Cayenne Pepper

Spicy cayenne pepper works well at clearing the sinuses when you have a stuffy nose. Sprinkle a bit on whatever you're eating--it tastes especially good in chili.

Peppermint

Peppermint also helps to clear a stuffy nose. Boil some water and add a few drops of peppermint oil. After the water comes to a rolling boil, take it off the stove, and place it in front of you. Bend your head over the pot, and place a towel over your head and the pot. Breathe in the peppermint-scented steam.
