Eucalyptus Oil For An Ear Infection

Eucalyptus oil has healing properties

Ear infections, or otitis, occur in various parts of the ear and to varying degrees of discomfort. While they often go away on their own, you can help your body recover from an ear infection more quickly by using eucalyptus oil as an inhalant.

Significance

Ear infections, particularly those of the middle ear, are the most common reason children go to the doctor. Some children are otitis prone, while the majority will have at least one ear infection by the age of three, according to Pediatric Otolaryngology.

Eucalyptus oil

Various natural oils can be used directly inside of the ear to irrigate or flush the ear of infectious bacteria; however, eucalyptus oil is not one of these. Although it has antibacterial properties, its mechanism for curing ear infections is less direct than topical application. For this reason, eucalyptus is used in many commercial decongestant medicines.

Causes

Middle ear infection is caused by germs from the nose and throat which accumulate behind the ear drum. The cold or flu can cause the small tube which connects the throat and ear to swell and trap fluids in the middle ear. Fluid build-up invites bacterial infection.

Function

Eucalyptus oil is a potent inhalant effective in treating various upper respiratory problems, including those which lead to ear infection. It functions by acting on receptors in the nasal mucosa, reducing nasal congestion, according to Herbal Extract Plus. It also heals colds by loosening phlegm allowing it to be coughed up to clear chest and nasal passages.

Method

Purchase essential eucalyptus oil from a health food store or pharmacy. Put a few drops in boiling water and cover the head with a towel so the sinuses can inhale all of the fumes. It can also be put in warm bath water for children and used repeatedly until earaches subside.
