Use Herbal Henna

Herbal henna conditions hair and gives a glossy shine to tresses.

Herbal henna is an all-natural home remedy for dry hair, dandruff and hair loss. Henna is also known for its ability to lightly color hair without the harsh chemicals found in commercial hair dyes. Herbal henna is a powder made from dried henna leaves and when combined with other natural ingredients makes a paste to color or condition your hair. Some commercial hair dyes claim to be all natural but in reality contain various chemicals. If you buy a hair-coloring product that claims to turn your natural color into blonde or brown, it contains chemicals. Herbal henna will only shade your hair red.

Instructions

1. Measure the amount of henna needed for your hair length. Herbal henna comes in a powdered form and short hair requires less powder than long hair. Consult a mixing chart if you are unsure how much henna to use.

2. Put the henna powder into the mixing bowl. Add any other dry ingredients like cloves, cinnamon or paprika if required. Mix together the dry ingredients with a wooden spoon.

3. Add the liquid ingredients needed for your henna mixture. For waist-length light brown hair use 1-cup lemon juice and 1-cup water. Mix the dry and liquid ingredients together using a wooden spoon. These ingredients will turn your hair bright red after application. For further mixing information visit the Henna for Hair mix chart. Your ingredient list will change depending on your henna needs.

4. Cover the mixture with plastic wrap and let sit overnight. If you are dying your hair with herbal henna, the longer you let the mixture sit the more color is released in the paste. For a conditioner, allow the mixture to sit for one to two hours.

5. Apply the henna mixture to your hair from root to tip. Use a small comb as you work the paste through your hair so it is evenly distributed.

6. Allow the mixture to sit on your hair for 30 minutes as a conditioner and rinse it out with warm water. Hair color needs to sit in your hair longer; add an extra one to two hours for each shade darker you want your hair. Rinse with warm water to remove the henna paste.
