A bundle of fibers known as the sciatic nerve runs from your spinal cord down the back of each leg. The fibers transmit impulses through the neurons to the spinal cord and brain so that they perceive stimuli. But when pressure is placed on this pathway, it disrupts the electrochemical impulses and causes pain. This pain, sciatica, is caused by pressure on the nerve roots, possibly from a herniated or slipped disk.
Treatment
Most people can reduce sciatic nerve pain through over-the-counter analgesics, exercise, or cold or heat therapy. But you may need prescription medications, such as muscle relaxants, for relief. Since this pain can be categorized as neuropathic, it may also respond to anticonvulsants, like Neurontin (generic name gabapentin).
Efficacy
When a disk in the spine's lumbar region suffers a slippage or herniation, it can place pressure on the sciatic nerve's roots. This pressure irritates the fibers that make up the sciatic nerve, causing it to transmit faulty impulses to the brain. These impulses cause a shooting pain from your lower back down into the leg and a sense of tingling or numbness. Neurontin can counteract this impulse; it acts like a common neurotransmitter in the body, lessening the sensations you're experiencing.
Dosage
Dosage is based on a number of factors, including weight, age and the level or intensity of the pain. You'll initially receive a relatively low dosage that may be increased as the body acclimates to the medication.
Warnings
Do not take Neurontin if you are allergic to gabapentin.
Before taking the drug, tell your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or heart disease.
Call your doctor immediately if you have mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, increased aggression or thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.
Before taking Neurontin, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
