Live With Angina

An estimated 9.1 million Americans have angina. In most cases this condition is caused by heart disease. People who have this condition can lead productive lives by adopting a heart healthy lifestyle.

Instructions

Live With Angina

1. First you need to understand what angina is and how it effects the body. Angina is a form of coronary artery disease in which blood flow to the heart is restricted. This causes chest pains. Some patients describe it as a squeezing tightness in the chest area.

2. Establish a heart healthy diet. You should eat plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Eat fish like salmon and tuna which contain omega-3 fatty acids (good fats). Limit your intake of foods that are high in fat such as red meat, cheese, and baked foods. Avoid foods that are high in sodium such as canned and processed foods.

3. Don't smoke. If you are a smoker, find a cessation program. You can get suggestions from your doctor or the American Cancer Society. You can also try a support group or look online for a tobacco treatment specialist.

4. Exercise your body. Ask your doctor which exercises are safe for you and how often you can do them. You may need to take breaks while exercising to avoid over exerting yourself.

5. Find healthy ways to manage your stress. You can do this through yoga and meditation. Go to the beach or take a walk. This can help clear your mind and help you relax.
