Emotional Reasons For Head Congestion

Head congestion is not always caused by a cold bug or allergies. Our bodies often have negative physical reactions to other factors--- including our emotions.

Stress

Believe it or not, our issues at work, with our significant others, and any other stressors, have an effect on our physical health. If you're losing sleep, losing your appetite, and never feeling rested, you're definitely feeling stressed. When you lose your ability to slow down and unwind, your body loses its ability to fight even the most basic of illnesses. This often leads to frequent colds and nasal congestion.

Depression

We all get glum now and then, but depression is another issue entirely. Whether it be clinical, or resulting from trauma or loss, overwhelming sadness can take a physical form. This may be because of a neglected immune system, or even just a warning sign that you have a clinical issue and should be seen by a professional.

Physical Reactions

We've known this since we were children---outbursts of emotion often leave us with more than just a wet hanky. Whether you're crying out of happiness or sadness, shedding tears affects your entire sinus system. Your tear or lacrimal ducts are releasing tears faster than you can cry---and they release extra moisture into your nasal passages, causing head congestion and runny nose.

Solutions

When it comes to stress and sudden emotions, time is really your best solution. Do your best to take time away from your stressors, focus on your well-being, and most importantly, rest and eat a balanced diet. Expel as much of your congestion as you can safely, and your symptoms will eventually subside.

When To See A Doctor

If you are showing multiple signs of depression, including but certainly not limited to physical symptoms, seek the opinion of a medical professional. Your doctor will be able to prescribe medicine, as well as lifestyle changes, to battle the depression. If you have attempted to take on all other lifestyle changes---including de-stressing---and the congestion persists, seek medical attention.
