Exercise is one of the best holistic methods to relieve depression symptoms. Even light exercise, such as jogging or walking, can be beneficial. In September 2000, scientists at Duke University's Medical Center found that exercise was just as helpful in treating depression as Zoloft, a popular prescription drug used to treat depression. They also found that patients who exercised were less likely to have a relapse of depression symptoms. Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin conducted other studies with similar results. Hypnosis
Hypnosis, or hypnotherapy, may lessen the severity of many depression symptoms. During a hypnosis session, the patient enters a trance-like state and is mentally "fed" calming images and phrases. Hypnotherapists claim that these images enter the patient's subconscious mind, making it easier for him to relax and effectively deal with depression in day-to-day life. Hypnotherapy may be more effective for those with mild forms of depression, though it has not been extensively scientifically studied.
