The national Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (MSF) strives to be a comprehensive, empathetic resource of information and personal assistance to multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and their families, providing services to improve cognitive, social and physical functioning of MS patients or simply to improve the quality of the patient's life. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants funds to small businesses and research institutions to increase the number of opportunities for MS patients to be paid for participation in studies.
Home Care Grant Program
The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, a national nonprofit based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which assists patients with multiple sclerosis, their family, caregivers and health care professionals, uses its funds strictly to improve the lives of multiple sclerosis patients. Bayer Health Care is one stakeholder in the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. All MSF services are free of charge, but some services are need based.
The MSF Home Care Assistance Grant Program assists with personal care of patients, therapy visits with occupational, speech and physical therapists and respite care for caregivers. Applications are available online with questions that help the Home Care Coordinator assess the patient's cognitive, physical and social functioning. The Home Care Coordinator determines what services will be provided.

Research Studies Pay Multiple Sclerosis Patients
Researchers need people living with multiple sclerosis to find causes and cures for the disease. Researchers doing DNA studies pay for blood samples from MS patients and their family. Brain and spinal cord tissue is especially needed. Multiple sclerosis patients and their families can participate in clinical trials or genetic studies and donate to tissue banks. If you are pregnant with MS, researchers are extremely interested in the effects of interferon on unborn children. Study participation can be arranged in advance at universities conducting research studies. The University of Maryland, Baltimore is one research institution with multiple studies to benefit MS patients. Amounts paid to the patient or caregiver vary by study. Applicants may apply through email or over the phone. The University of Maryland, Baltimore website provides information to apply for inclusion in research studies in other states. Listed on the University of Maryland website are University of Michigan studies of the management of chronic illness and Seton Hall in South Orange, New Jersey studies of mothers with multiple sclerosis.
