There are several over-the-counter medications used to clear up congestion.
Many of us at some point have suffered from congestion and chest pain. People usually have these symptoms when suffering form a cold or flu, but there are many other conditions that can cause these symptoms.
Condition
Health conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis and upper respiratory infections can all cause uncomfortable symptoms such as congestion and chest pain.

Symptoms that may accompany congestion and chest pain are coughing, sneezing, sinus pressure, runny nose, headache and dizziness. The symptoms that accompany the congestion and chest pain will pinpoint what condition is causing it.
Causes
Many of the causes of congestion and chest pain are bacterial or viral. These germs can be picked up by touching contaminated objects, or by inhaling droplets when an ill person coughs or sneezes.
Treatments
General congestion can be cleared up with over-the-counter expectorants such as Robitussin. But if this congestion is accompanied with pains in the chest, see your physician immediately, as you may have developed pneumonia.
Cautions
In addition to various illnesses, congestion and chest pain can also signal more serious health problems such as cardiac arrest and anaphylactic shock. Symptoms of cardiac arrest are shooting pains in the arms and legs, confusion and a feeling of pressure on the chest. Symptoms of anaphylactic shock are swelling of the tongue, difficulty breathing and coughing.
