Calibrate an LCD TV With Video
Calibrating an LCD screen is adjusting it so the picture quality is optimal. While you can calibrate a screen to your own personal sight preferences, it is also possible to calibrate a television to a standard coloring and sharpness based on the same test patterns that are used by television networks. These video test patterns can be found on TV or online.
Instructions
1. Record the video test patterns to tape or to DVD if you will be using the patterns on your television. Video test patterns are played on a regular basis on HDNet and are listed on the programming schedule. You can also find video patterns on YouTube for free that you can save to your computer using ClipNabber (see Resources) and then burn to DVD.
2. Play the video test patterns through your VCR or DVD player onto the television. Pause the video if the test pattern doesn't last long enough to finish calibration.
3. Locate the settings options for the television under the "Menu" button on the side of the TV or on the remote. Choose the "Settings" or "Picture" option to see the calibration options.
4. Use the "Brightness" feature on the LCD TV to adjust the television's black coloring. Lower the brightness until the black bars on the test pattern vanish and then raise the brightness until the black bars are just visible again.
5. Adjust the "Picture," "Hue" or "Contrast" setting on the TV to change the white coloring. Turn up the setting until the whites on the screen look as similar as possible and then lower the setting until off-white bars can be distinguished from pure white bars.
6. Make sure the "Picture mode" on an LCD television is set to either "Mild" or "Normal." While "Dynamic" settings on LCD TVs are designed to make the colors vivid, those colors are not true to the original picture.
