Tanning beds use ultraviolet rays to allow people to obtain tans without spending time in the sun. Tanning occurs when melanin is produced to protect the skin from these rays, leading to a darker skin color. Tanning beds have become very popular, but do have disadvantages.
Warning
Probably the most important consideration is that ultraviolet rays are the primary cause for skin cancer, including the most deadly types.
Aging Skin
Skin that is often exposed to ultraviolet rays also tends to age faster. This results in more wrinkles, age spots and unflattering changes in texture.
Sunburn
Tanning beds can cause sunburn just like the sun can, particularly in people with fair skin.
Eye Problems
People have reported eye injuries from tanning beds including corneal burns, cataracts and retinal damage. Anyone using a tanning bed should wear protective eye gear.
Cost
Obtaining a tan in the sunlight is free, but customers must pay to use tanning beds at salons, or purchase one for home use for a significant price.
