Kegal exercises are exercises that contract the muscles to help strengthen the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor helps control the release of urine. Women who have been pregnant often suffer from urinary incontinence after giving birth.


History


Kegal exercises were first developed by Dr. Arnold Kegal in 1984. He developed them as a way for women to control incontinence after the birth of a baby.


Types








There are two main types of Kegal exercises. The first requires the woman to lift, tighten and draw in pelvic floor muscles slowly. The second Kegal exercise is similar to the first except the actions are done quickly rather than slowly.


Effects


In addition to Kegal exercises helping a women regain bladder control after pregnancy, they can tone the vaginal muscles and make sexual intercourse more pleasurable.


Benefits


Kegal exercises do not cost anything. They can be done anywhere at anytime during and after pregnancy.


Considerations


Kegal exercises may not be beneficial to all woman after pregnancy. It is best to seek a doctor's advice before starting any form of exercise.
