Make a Flax Seed Pillow
Flax seed provides great filler for pillows. Flax seeds are completely smooth, which means there are no brittle bits that can break off and pierce through the fabric of your pillow. They are also very lightweight, and can rest easily across any part of your body without feeling cumbersome. As they are small, they provide malleable filling that follow the contours of your body, making for excellent support. Flax-seed pillows are most commonly used as eye pillows that lay gently across your eyes while you rest, blocking out light and relaxing the body. You can make your own flax-seed pillow and save a bundle. Material costs are relatively cheap, and you can make the pillow any size you wish.
Instructions
1. Choose the type of fabric you would like to use for your flax-seed pillow. Lighter fabrics like satin and silk will have a cooling effect. Thicker fabrics like velvet and flannel will bring warmth.
2. Cut two equal lengths of fabric. The pieces should be about 10" long and 4" wide.
3. Line up the two pieces of fabric together, with the exterior or right sides facing inward. It should look as if the fabric is inside out.
4. Use straight pins to keep the fabric lined up perfectly.
5. Sew the edges of the fabric together, along three sides. Leave one widthwise side of the pillow open. You can either use a sewing machine to sew the fabric together, or a simple hand stitch.
6. Reverse the fabric, essentially turning the pillow right-side out. You may need to push out the corners with your fingers.
7. Fill the pillow with flax seed, pouring it through the top (open side). Only fill the pillow about halfway to 3/4 full with the flax seed. You want the seeds to have move to room around and mold to your face when you use the completed pillow. You can add more or less flax seed according to your personal preference.
8. Sew the fourth side of the fabric together, closing the opening. Make sure your stitches are close enough together to prevent seeds from escaping from the pillow.
