Hip subluxation, a type of partial hip dislocation, sometimes occurs in infants or as a result of an injury (see Reference 2). If an infant develops hip subluxation, he should be treated immediately or risk abnormal development (see Reference 1). The longer you wait to treat hip subluxation, the less likely it is that full hip function can be restored (see Reference 1).
In Infants
If an infant younger than three months old develops hip subluxation, a doctor may gently manipulate the hip joint with her hands to put the hip back in place (see Reference 1). The doctor will then hold the hip in a flexed position using a splint-brace or harness so that the hip can heal (see Reference 1). The infant will wear this device for an average of two or three months, and then may need to use a night splint for another month to ensure that the joint stabilizes in its correct alignment (see Reference 1).
Skin Traction
If an infant or toddler over the age of three months who hasn't begun to walk develops hip subluxation, doctors may try a method called bilateral skin traction to remedy the problem (see Reference 1). Skin traction utilizes pulling force to hold bones in a correct position (see Reference 3). If the physician elects not to use surgery to correct the bunion, using the following techniques can reduce bunion pain and swelling.
Avoid Narrow Toed Shoes
Avoiding wearing shoes with a narrow foot area can reduce pain. According to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, narrow toed shoes such as high heels squish the toes together, increasing the pain and inflammation associated with bunions. To reduce pain, wear flat footed shoes with a wide toe area to avoid squishing the toes. Avoid wearing high heeled shoes, which increases pressure on the bunion.
Wear a Soft Orthotic Device
Placing a soft orthotic device in the shoe also relieves bunion and discomfort. Soft orthotic devices, available over-the-counter (OTC), are worn under the sole of the foot, relieving pressure on sore spots. Many people find it very relaxing to meditate for a short period each day. Meditation can be beneficial to not only emotional and spiritual health, but physical health as well. One of the most important aspects of an effective meditation session is to be comfortable. After all, you can't truly relax if you are fidgeting and squirming. Although you can easily meditate on a couch or in a chair, for a lot of people, meditation cushions are the best way to go. You can make just one to sit on, or make several to put in a pile for maximum comfort. They are not hard to make, and will present you with a lot of different options for a relaxed mediation experience.
Instructions
1. Wash and thoroughly dry each length of material. Use your dryer's low setting, so the fabric will come out less wrinkled. Press any creases out of the fabric before you begin sewing.
2. Fold the 2 yards of fabric in half, with the right side of the material facing inward. Pin the edges around two of the open sides. On the third open side, only pin about halfway along. Remember, you'll already have the fourth side complete, because it is where you folded the fabric.
3. Stitch the two full sides shut. Sew halfway down the last side, leaving an opening where you stopped pinning. Reach in through the opening and turn the fabric back right side out. Press the material so that there are no bunches or tucks near the seams.
4. Stuff the pillow with Polyfil or other stuffing of your choice. For a softer pillow, use less stuffing, for a firmer pillow use more. If you would like to include some herbs associated with relaxation, such as lavender, go ahead and stuff them inside with the filling.
5. Pin the opening shut, and hand-stitch it closed. Plump your pillow up, place it on the floor, and begin your meditation session.
The term chemotherapy can refer to any medicinal therapy, but the common usage and association for the term specifically relates to the drugs used in cancer treatment. There are over 100 different chemotherapy medications, most of which are administered systemically. This means they are delivered intravenously---through the use of a vein---and travel through the blood stream. Some chemotherapy is also locally administered, or injected right into the site of the tumor. Still other chemotherapies are given orally, in pill form. Chemotherapies may be given in conjunction with biotherapies, which involve the use of living organisms to help treat cancer.
How It Works Works
Cells within the body are made up of living tissue that goes through five stages of development. When a cell reproduces, it passes through each of these five stages of development. When it is finished, the two cells (the original cell and its reproduction) are exactly the same. Chemotherapy drugs stop cells from reproducing by interrupting one of the five stages of development. Unfortunately, chemotherapy drugs usually can't tell the difference between cancer cells and healthy cells, which is why other cells that reproduce frequently (such as hair follicle cells and the cells in the digestive track) are adversely affected by chemotherapy. The reproduction cycle is interrupted, causing the nausea, vomiting, hair loss and other side effects associated with chemotherapy.
Biotherapy may be administered simultaneously with chemotherapy or before or after chemotherapy. Biotherapy (called HGF or hematopoietic growth factors) may be given during chemotherapy to help stimulate the growth of bone marrow stem cells, which may be impacted by chemotherapy. Interlukin biotherapy may be administered to help boost the growth of immune cells destroyed by chemotherapy, while interferon biotherapy may be administered to also aid in boosting immune response.
Guidelines for Choosing a Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Agent
A number of different factors go into choosing which chemotherapy treatment to use on a patient. The essential factors vary by patient and include the origin of the cancer, the stage of the cancer, the patient's age and general health, and the patient's past history, if any, of cancer treatments. Doctors also look at past cases, medical studies, and clinical trials to determine which chemotherapy drugs should be used. Often, cancers respond better to a combination of drugs, so oncologists look at past combinations that have been successful in similar circumstances.
The appropriate biotherapy to accompany the chemotherapy, if any, depends on the type of cancer. Biotherapy is generally available for lymphoma or breast cancer. The biotherapy agent most commonly given as part of chemotherapy to treat breast cancer is called Herceptin, and the biotherapy for lymphoma is called Rituxan.
Dosage and Scheduling
Doctors consider the appropriate dosages of chemotherapy and the schedules for administering the drug. Chemotherapy drugs are very strong and can have many adverse consequences on the body. Lower doses have fewer side effects and can be given with greater frequency over longer periods of time without taxing the body. However, the lower doses may not be as effective at killing cancer cells. Higher doses may be more effective at killing cancer cells but can't be given as frequently because the body needs time to recover between treatments. Cancer cells can grow during the time periods necessary for recovery. These factors must be balanced in order to set a dosage schedule, which may need to be altered if the patient responds poorly to treatment or suffers adverse side effects or the cancer cells continue to grow.
Administration of biotherapy is still largely experimental as of 2009, and according to Danbury Hospital, it may not be readily available as part of a cancer treatment program. As of 2009, Danbury Hospital suggests that the majority of biotherapy is administered as part of clinical trials or research studies.
Selecting a Dosage Method
Chemotherapy can be given orally (in pill form), or applied topically (in the form of cream or lotion). It can be given intravenously or injected into muscles, under the skin or directly into arteries. It can be infused into the cerebrospinal fluid or into the chest cavity, bladder or stomach. Finally, it can be injected directly into the tumor. The method of delivering the treatment depends on the specific drug and/or the specific type of tumor being treated.
Biotherapy is generally administered orally, in pill form.
Safety Guidelines
Chemotherapy drugs can be dangerous to doctors and nurses who come into contact with the medication. They can alter DNA structure or cells, potentially put people at risk for certain types of cancers, interfere with fetal development in pregnant women, and irritate the skin. Doctors and nurses handling chemotherapy medications or administering this biotherapy need to use precautions to avoid contact with the drugs, including wearing gloves, gowns and goggles. They should take precautions to avoid accidentally inhaling the drugs when preparing the dosage. In Aryuvedic medicine, there are three main doshas, or energies, that govern the human body. These doshas combine and interact to create the individual characteristics of every person, but only one or two will emerge as the dominating dosha. The vata dosha, which means "wind" in Sanskrit, controls the movement of the body, as well as the activities of the nervous system and the bowels. People with a predominantly vata constitution exhibit specific characteristics that the other doshas do not exhibit. Similarly, an imbalanced vata displays specific signs unique to that dosha.
Physical Appearance
People with a vata constitution tend to be slender or slim, even to the point of appearing physically underdeveloped. Their skin is dry and delicate, making the veins or tendons beneath much more prominent. Finger- and toenails are brittle or rough.
Physiological Aspects
When the vata dosha rules, sleep is light and often disturbed. Energy comes quickly and is replaced by sudden fatigue. The digestion system is sensitive and stool is dry, hard and scant. The hands and feet are often cold.
Emotional Constitution
Predominantly vata doshas love change, excitement and the allure of something new. Vatas have little willpower and may understand quickly but soon forget. They are highly spirited and make friends with ease, and showcase a high degree of creativity and passion. They do everything quickly, whether it's walking, talking or changing moods.
Signs of Imbalance
Each dosha displays unique signs of balance, and the same goes for an aggravated dosha. Emotionally, an imbalanced vata will experience excessive anxiety or worry, depression, feelings of shyness or inferiority and mental agitation. Physically, they experience restlessness, weight loss, constipation, sensitivity to cold or fainting spells.
Alcoholism is often marked by psychological behavior, including denial, evasion and hostile or abusive attitudes toward others. Physical symptoms often develop as well--some directly connected to alcoholism, others caused by related conditions such as poor nutrition. The National Institute of Health and numerous other medical organizations have defined a number of physical signs directly connected to alcoholism.
Increased Tolerance

Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA) is a laser vision procedure that is used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Preoperative
You will arrive at the laser center an hour before your procedure. Dress warmly, as the operating room is cold. You will then be asked to look directly at a red light while the laser reshapes your cornea. The red light will become more difficult to see as the procedure goes on. Try not to move your head and eye much, but if you do it should not affect the outcome of the procedure because of the laser's automated tracking system.
The laser treatment takes less then a minute per eye. Once the treatment is completed, the doctor will give you additional eye drops and insert a protective soft contact lens to act as a bandage and reduce discomfort.
Postoperative
After the procedure, you should have someone drive you home because your vision will probably be blurry. You should relax for the rest of the day. The doctor will give you antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops and instruct you when to use them.
The recovery period for ASA usually lasts two to four days, during which you may experience mild to moderate discomfort and blurred vision. The epithelium should regenerate within this time period. You will return to the doctor the day after the procedure to monitor healing. If your eye is healing as expected and there is no discomfort, the protective lens will be removed on the third or fourth day. There will be one more follow up evaluation ten days after the procedure, and then at one month and three months.

Back of the Legs

The Back
Apply more oil or lotion to your hands and use the same long strokes from the top of the shoulders to the lower back. Repeat several times with a firm stroke down the back and a lighter one on the return to the shoulders.
Standing to one side of the receiver, use your forearm to stroke more deeply from the lower back up around the inside of the shoulder blade. This is a firm technique that accesses broader muscle tissue without the pain that fingertip pressure can sometimes elicit. Repeat the forearm stroke a few times. Move to the other side of the back and repeat.
Move to the shoulders again and using supported thumbs, press and slide them down either side of the spine several times. Keep contact with the receiver's body and glide your palms over the sides of the back on the return to the shoulders.
Head, Neck, Shoulders and Arms
Have the receiver turn over onto their back. Without applying more lubricant, use your fingertips to make circular motions on the scalp. Cover the entire scalp including the back of the head. Using fingertips, stroke gently across the forehead and use circular fingertip motions around the eyes, cheeks and mouth.
Apply oil to your hands and use short strokes up and down the neck on both sides. Squeeze the back neck muscles gently. Continue with more stroking down the neck and across the shoulders. Squeeze and apply thumb pressure to the tops of shoulders to release any tension there.
Continue long strokes down the receiver's arm and back up to the shoulder once more. Take time to lightly pull and rotate the fingers and use thumb circles in the palms of the recipient's hands.
Abdomen, Front of Legs and Feet
Through the sheet, apply large circular motions to the receiver's abdomen with the palms of your hands. Begin gently by simply placing your hands on their abdomen. Add light circular motions starting from the lower right side, up to the ribcage, then down the left side and across.
Uncover one leg. Beginning from the ankle; use long gliding strokes up over the shins, around the kneecap and up to the upper thigh. Repeat several times. Follow up with kneading the strong upper thigh muscles.
Repeat massage on recipient's other leg.
Finish the full body massage with your receiver's feet. Using supported thumbs or knuckles, make circular motions over the entire sole of the foot. Be firm with pressure or the receiver may find it ticklish instead of soothing. Gently pull and slightly twist toes to relieve tension there. Cover the feet with a sheet and lightly place your hands on the tops of them to impart a further feeling of relaxation and safety, while indicating an end to the massage.

A good trick to gain awareness of these muscles is by attempting to stop the flow of urine midstream while you are going to the bathroom. Kegels can be performed anywhere at any time, but a good method to use for individuals still gaining familiarity with the exercise is to sit in a chair with the hips hanging off the front. Breathe in deeply into your stomach, then as you exhale, squeeze the same muscles you used to halt urine flow and hold for the duration of your exhalation. Breathe in again, releasing the muscles and mentally "feel" the pelvic floor descend. Repeat for twenty or more cycles every time you practice, and you will quickly gain awareness of these subtle but important muscles.
Kegel Variations
Once you master the basic Kegel, you will want to graduate to more advanced variations. For one, you can try "elevators." To perform an elevator, instead of fully contracting all your muscles with each squeeze, imagine your pelvic area is like an elevator shaft with differing floors. With each squeeze, progressively raise the "elevator" from floor to floor, increasing the intensity of the contraction.
Another variation you can practice is the "wave." The wave requires advanced muscular control, as it involves rhythmic contractions of your pelvic floor muscles one group at a time. Begin by contracting your urethral muscles, then release and contract your vaginal muscles, then release and finally contract your anal muscles. After you perform a wave from front to back, go back to front. By learning individual control over each of these groups, you will further strengthen and develop them all. Aim for ten to twenty total "waves" with each practice session, and be patient if you cannot fully control all of your muscles the first time you try. Just be persistent.

Strengthening these muscles can also lead to better eye sight. Here are some exercises you can do to reduce strain. Sitting comfortably and breathing normally, all of these exercises should be performed by moving only the eyes. Head and neck remain still.
2. Look up to the ceiling (or as high as you comfortably can). Hold for a count of five seconds. Look down as far as you can, and hold for five seconds. Do this a total of five times. Blink several times to rest the eyes.
3. Look to the left as far as you can, and hold for five seconds. Repeat on the right side. Blink several times to rest the eye muscles.
4. Look up and to the right, diagonally, and hold for five seconds. Now look down and to the left, diagonally, and hold for five seconds. Blink a few times, then reverse the movement, looking to the upper left corner, then the lower right corner. Blink several times, to reduce the eye strain.
5. After 5 or 6 days of performing the first three eye exercises, you can move on to include the following exercises in your eye yoga routine. From here on out, you'll be performing all seven each day.
6. Slowly roll your eyes in a clockwise circle. Begin by looking down, circling slowly to the left, upwards, then down to the right. Reverse, and do the same wide circle in a counter-clockwise motion. Do five times each way. Blink to alleviate the eye strain you might feel.
7. Hold your finger in front of your face, as close as you can get it with it being in focus. Focus on your finger, then immediately focus on something considerably further away. Alternate this near-and-far focusing for one minute, switching your focus every three seconds. Squeeze your eyes shut tightly to relax them, then blink several times.

9. Rub your palms together quickly, creating heat. Cup your hands over your eyes. To block out all light, overlap the fingers of your right hand over the fingers of your left hand, on your forehead. Not only is this relaxing, but it helps bring proper blood flow to the eyes.
