Inflammatory Arthritis Symptoms

Arthritis is inflammation of the joints, and most commonly occurs in the hands, wrists, hip, back and knees. The inflammation of joints can wear down the cartilage and damage the bones over a period of several years. The symptoms of inflammatory arthritis are chronic and may require medical or home treatments as well as pain management.

Pain

The inflammation of joints can cause pain when trying to move, and some types of inflammatory arthritis may cause worse pain during repetitive movements, such as typing.

Weakness

Decreased strength and problems with gripping and manipulating objects are symptoms of inflammatory arthritis of the hands and fingers.

Swelling

Inflammatory arthritis in the hands and fingers can cause swelling of the affected joints due to a buildup of fluids.

Stiffness

Stiffness, especially in the morning or after sitting for a long time, may result from a lack of movement of joints affected by inflammatory arthritis.

Immobility

Severe inflammation of joints may cause a decrease in the range of motion, including problems with walking and moving around.

Disfigurement

According to the Mayo Clinic, arthritis that lasts for a long time can cause twisting and other malformations of the joints, especially in the fingers and hands.

Prevention/Solution

Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce wear on the joints of the back, hips and knees, and regular movement or exercise can reduce stiffness and pain from arthritis.

Treatments For Hemophobia

Hemophobia is described as a fear of blood that produces symptoms in individuals when no real threat exists. Many people suffer from this fear that produces a myriad of symptoms that interferes with everyday functioning.

Significance

Hemophobia is a fear of blood that causes certain symptoms in a person. It can develop into a fear of dying, going mad or losing control. It is a high level of fear and anxiety that causes multiple symptoms like sweating, dry mouth, shaking, heart palpitations and the inability to speak or think clearly. Many people have this fear that often goes untreated.

Function

The fear associated with this illness is often irrational. It is often hard for a person with this fear to deal with the symptoms and face treatment for it. Sometimes dealing with this fear brings on an anxiety attack or panic attack. It is a phobia--a psychological and physical condition--that causes a common fear to turn into serious disabilities.

Features

There are different types of treatment for this problem. Hypnosis is a way to reprogram the subconscious so that you will receive different messages in your brain. It is supposed to change the way that you react to the problems and symptoms of the illness. The therapy does produce a rapid and behavioral change in the way you think and feel when used. It is worth looking into if you have the symptoms.

Considerations

Another treatment for this disease is called neuro linguistic programming. It is the study of how people create their reality through thoughts and actions. Your fear is the result of the way you think and react, so this process helps you train and learn a new way to act. This programming or training often helps eliminate the symptoms or reaction to the illness. This is another of therapy to consider if you suffer from heomophobia

Solutions

Energy psychology is a new treatment for the different fears and phobia. It is an emerging trend and has been proven to be effective and safe. It is based on some of the principles of acupuncture but no needles are used in the process. It is described as an emotional acupuncture. The treatment works by exposing you to the fear, talking about the fear and not using any drugs to treat it. It is another treatment to consider if you suffer from this illness.

Does Wearing A Hat Cause A Receding Hairline

Some Myths Die Hard

There is an illusion that wearing hats causes baldness, and it is possible that this myth is accentuated by the fact that so many men wear hats on a regular or even habitual basis. Quite often these same men (and sometimes women) are wearing those hats to cover an embarrassing hair loss. But it is only a myth that wearing hats can cause hair loss.

Trapping Oils in the Scalp

The only time that wearing a hat can even remotely cause a problem is if you wear one every day on a regular basis. Doing this can cause a build up of oil on the scalp, which can fill the hair follicles and "gum" them up, sometimes causing the hair follicles to die, which leads to eventual hair loss. Simply washing the hair more often to remove the excess oil can reverse or prevent this type of hair loss. Try to wash the hat occasionally, too.

Genetics, Disease and Stress

Hair loss can be caused by genetics from both the mother's and father's side of the family and not by any type of actual hair covering like hats, do-rags or wigs. It can be caused by certain diseases, such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and alopecia, a condition that causes hair to fall out in clumps. It can also be caused by stress, so learning relax and handle problems in better ways is a good way to alleviate this type of hair loss.

Cure Neuralgia

Neuralgia is a pain condition that originates in a nerve and may be caused by damage or trauma to a nerve, infection, pressure placed on a nerve by a blood vessel, or a number of other causes. According to Medline Plus, it is not always possible to isolate what is causing neuralgia. In order to successfully manage nerve pain, a number of techniques are normally used in combination with each other to provide the best relief based on an individual patient's needs.

Instructions

Treating Neuralgia

1. Go to your doctor to help establish the cause of your pain. Be sure to share information, such as injury or recent infection, with your doctor, as this may help pinpoint a diagnosis; because neuralgia can be caused by a number of different things, you may be asked numerous questions and asked to undergo testing. Neuralgia can be difficult to diagnose, and your doctor may refer you to a pain-management specialist in order to reach a diagnosis and develop a suitable treatment plan.

2. Take medications as directed by your doctor to treat neuralgia. These may include, according to Medline Plus, antidepressants and anticonvulsant medications, over-the-counter or prescription painkillers, topical pain relievers, nerve blocks and anesthetic injections. If the cause of neuralgia can be identified, it can be treated more specifically; for instance, topical lidocaine and corticosteroids are important elements of treatment for postherpetic neuralgia, which is a complication of shingles outbreak.

3. Discuss non-medicinal techniques to relieve the pain of neuralgia. For example, the Massachusetts General Hospital Pain Center reports that people experiencing occipital neuralgia may find relief from techniques such as physical therapy, massages, acupuncture and heat treatment.

4. Ask your doctor about surgical options. These may explored if there is found to be damage to or pressure on the nerve, or if other pain-relief strategies are ineffective. These treatments might relieve pressure on the nerve, or damage the nerve so that it cannot send pain signals.

Meet The Dsm Criteria For Anorexia

Meet the DSM Criteria for Anorexia

The "Bible" of psychiatric diagnosis is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which is published by the American Psychiatric Association. Because it is currently in its fourth edition, the acronym is often written as DSM IV. It is by the standards of this manual that American psychiatric patients are told what they "have." There are four DSM criteria for anorexia and two types of the disorder listed. A look at whether or not she meets these criteria can help even a layman to better understand her own or someone else's anorexia.

Instructions

1. Write down the symptoms of anorexia as you or someone you know experiences them.

2. Write the letters A to D in a column under the symptoms.

3. Find the list of DSM IV criteria for anorexia at Eatingdisorders.org (see Resources below).

4. Look at the condition described at letter "A." Compare the person's weight with the normal weight range on the height-weight chart at I Love India (see Resources below). If weight is consistently less than 85 percent of normal and she refuses to gain any more, put a check mark by letter "A."

5. Look at letter "B" concerning fear of gaining weight. If it applies, check "B."

6. Examine letter "C" carefully. A good rule of thumb is this: if talk about food and weight dominates the person's conversation, or if she frequently complains about being too fat (especially if she is thin), then letter "C" applies.

7. Mark letter "D," concerning missed periods, as true or false.

8. Compare your list of symptoms with the mark you gave each letter. If the symptoms match two or more of the descriptions, the person should see a doctor.

Indian Head Massage In Pregnancy

Indian head massage is a safe, effective way for pregnant women to relieve stress.

Pregnancy places massive physical stress on a woman's body, including joint pain, back pain and abdominal pain. But you should not ignore the effects pregnancy can have on your upper body, as well. For these discomforts, Indian head massage could offer relief and be safer for you than traditional massage. This therapy touches the upper back and shoulders, upper arms, neck, face, head and scalp.

History

Indian head massage stems from ayurveda, an ancient Indian medicine system that aims to balance the body, mind and spirit to prolong life. First records of this massage date from 5,000 years ago. Today, you can find mothers giving head massages to their children, and men receive the massage as a standard part of their hair cuts at barber shops. Indian head massage is also used as a part of traditional hair therapy for women.

Function

Indian head massage uses acupressure on the head, neck and shoulders to relieve tension. A 30- to 60-minute session can use natural oils (usually sesame, sweet almond or olive oil) to nourish the hair and cleanse the pores. If you are in the first trimester, however, inhaling scented oils can trigger nausea. Some oils are unsafe during pregnancy (for example, jasmine, juniper and fennel) because they induce contractions. To be safe, you can ask your therapist not to use oils.

Safety

In India, pregnant women may receive head massages every day and at least 40 days post-delivery. Indian head massage allows you to sit in a chair rather than lie down for a traditional massage. Sitting is not only more comfortable, but it is also safer--lying down in later pregnancy can put immense pressure on your back and your arteries, restricting blood flow to both you and your baby.

Benefits

Pregnant women are more susceptible to headaches than other women. According to research from the Institute of Indian Head Massage, these massages relieve headaches as well as congestion--another frequent annoyance in pregnancy. Pregnant women can also struggle with their concentration due to the high level of hormones in their blood. Indian head massage practitioners say it can increase alertness and the ability to focus. If you suffer from insomnia, head massage could also help you get a full night's sleep.

Cautions

Despite the benefits of Indian head massage for pregnant women, you should avoid a massage if you have a fever, an active migraine, a head or neck injury or if you've experienced a recent hemorrhage. In addition, you should get your obstetrician's permission before scheduling an appointment. You should forgo an Indian head massage completely if you have a history of miscarriage or other pregnancy complications.

Benefit Of Nuclear Technology In Medicine

Nuclear technology in medicine uses radioactive materials within diagnostic imaging procedures.

The use of nuclear technology in medicine opens up a new world of methods for the evaluation and treatment of illnesses. The field of nuclear medicine combines principles from nuclear physics with medical procedure and practice. Ongoing developments within the field have brought about the use of radioactive materials within exploratory and treatment procedures.

Identification

Diagnostic testing devices like X-rays direct radiation into the body to obtain information on the body's internal structures. Nuclear technology differs in its approach by recording the radiation emitted by the body by tracking small amounts of ingested radioactive material. In doing so, doctors can obtain information on how the organs within the body function as well as their structural condition, according to the Mayo Clinic. In effect, doctors can determine the cause of a medical problem based on how a particular portion of the body functions.

Function

Through the use of specialized imaging devices, technicians can record digital images of radioactive energy being emitted by specific areas of the body. According to the Mayo Clinic, drugs known as radiopharmaceuticals are ingested prior to the procedure. These drugs can be taken orally, intravenously or even through inhaling. They're designed to concentrate within specific areas of the body so imaging devices can record a visual representation of what the area looks like and how it functions. Since in many cases, exploratory surgery can be the only other means for obtaining information on bodily function, patients benefit by avoiding the need for surgical procedures.

Radionuclides

Low-level radioactive chemicals are the materials used to make radionuclides. These materials--like most nuclear materials--emit gamma rays, which is how imaging devices are able to record their location in the body. Gamma ray emissions are viewable, and recordable, by specially designed gamma cameras. Technetium and iodine are two of the radioactive substances used in the making of a radionuclide, according to Imaginis, a women's health resource site. Actual radiation amounts emitted are lower than those used in X-rays and CT scans.

Imaging

Imaging techniques used in nuclear medicine have certain benefits the more conventional diagnostic methods don't. According to Imaginis, the gamma cameras commonly used in these procedures produce images that show actual processes taking place within a particular organ or region of the body. X-rays and CT scans only produce a structural representation, which is for the most part a still picture. Emitted radiation waves are converted into electrical signals that create the digital image.

Effects

According to Imaginis, the methods used in nuclear technology allow for a quick and accurate diagnosis of a person's condition. The procedures used are cost-effective in terms of the quality of information obtained versus the costs involved in exploratory surgical procedures. These benefits can actually eliminate the risk of injury or infection that accompanies any form of surgery. In terms of radiation exposure, the techniques used with nuclear technology enable a more controlled administration of radioactive materials when compared with more conventional procedures.

Ways To Whiten Teeth With Athome Products

You have items in your home that you probably didn't know could be used as teeth whiteners. As more and more people seek whiter smiles, teeth whitening products continue to grow in number and variety. But you don't have to buy one of these products to get the white teeth you yearn for; there are some inexpensive items you already have in your home that could prove effective in whitening teeth. While the best teeth whitening methods are available only in a dentist's office, at-home treatment also can provide noticeable results.

Baking Soda

Baking soda has many uses in the home. One use is for scrubbing stains from the teeth. This is really all that teeth whiteners do--they remove stains left by food debris, wine, coffee, tea, smoking and other things. Baking soda makes a good paste when water is added to it. Dip your toothbrush in the mixture and apply it to your teeth every day. You can get faster results if you use hydrogen peroxide with the baking soda.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide can disinfect and clean. It also is a bleach used in products such as hair coloring kits and most teeth whiteners. In stronger concentrations, hydrogen peroxide can bleach paper. In lower concentrations, it is approved for human use both internally and externally by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The hydrogen peroxide you have in a dark bottle at home is about 3 percent solution, but it is still strong enough to clean the surface of the teeth. Pour a little peroxide in a cup, dip in your toothbrush and then apply the peroxide to the teeth a few times. Do this every day for best results. In time, you will notice that your teeth are whiter.

Lemons

A few home-remedy websites recommend using lemons to whiten the teeth. You can peel a lemon and then rub the rind against your teeth a few times. An easier method is to buy a bottle of lemon juice. With your toothbrush, apply the lemon juice to the teeth. Lemons have citric acid, and this acid can remove surface stains from the teeth. It is a natural and inexpensive way to whiten your teeth.

White Vinegar

White vinegar contains ascetic acid. This acid can clean the surface enamel of the teeth. It works in a similar way to lemon juice. It is a homemade remedy that often is recommended by home-remedy or natural treatment websites. Pour a small amount of vinegar in a cup and use your toothbrush to apply it to your teeth. Results will not be dramatic, but there will be signs of improvement in a few weeks if you are consistent with your applications.

Kill Salmonella

Salmonella are a type of bacteria that can survive within the intestines of animals and humans. If you become infected with salmonella, you will develop the symptoms of food poisoning like nausea, diarrhea, fever, stomach cramping and vomiting. It is important to kill salmonella in order to avoid infection.

Instructions

1. Heat foods thoroughly. Heat will kill the bacteria.

2. Use a food thermometer to measure the internal temperature of the item you are preparing. Poultry should be heated to 165 degrees Fahrenheit, ground beef and pork to 155 degrees and beef roasts to 145 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Consume only pasteurized dairy products. The pasteurization process uses high heat to kill bacteria in milk and milk products.

4. Kill salmonella on your hands by washing them with an antibacterial soap, especially if you are handling raw food items, animal feces or reptiles. Avoid touching other foods until you wash your hands in order to prevent cross contamination.

5. Wash surfaces with an antibacterial cleaner. Clean cutting boards, counters and other food preparation surfaces to kill salmonella that may be living on them.

Alexander Technique For The Spine

In the book "Body Work: What Kind of Massage to Get and Make the Most of It," Thomas Claire explains that the Alexander Technique, first discovered by F. Matthias Alexander, an Australian actor, is a technique for re-educating the mind and body to facilitate a healthy spine, good posture, better mobility and improved health. When you use the Alexander technique to improve the spine, you will have a greater range of motion, and any chronic pain you might experience is diminished.

Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique involves the use of hands-on guidance from a trained professional knowledgeable about the technique, as well as your ability to model the trainer that guides you. You will be given verbal instructions and cues that you have to follow, and the cues are designed to intensify your awareness of harmful habits that affect you physically and mentally. This technique is a popular form of study among artists, musicians, singers and actors who want to improve their poise and grace during movement. Through your trainer, you will master an understanding on the unification of body and mind and will further be instructed on learning pay attention to how you use and/or misuse your body.

Primary Control

The Alexander technique involves learning achieve primary control over your body: the concept of primary control means that your body is able to function at peak performance, that you are free of bad posturing habits and automated responses and that you can move freely and with grace. You will have to gain control over the positioning of your head, spine, neck and the way you sit, stand and walk at all times in order to achieve a state of primary control. How long you train in the Alexander technique depends on your ability to develop bodily awareness and primary control. Upon achieving primary control of the body, you will improve spine health, learn breathe correctly, reduce muscular tension and possibly prevent potential injuries to your head, neck, back and body in the future.

Head Positioning

As you are instructed by your Alexander trainer, your awareness will be purposefully aimed at the position of your head relative to your neck and spine. When your head is positioned correctly, your spine will be able to lengthen correctly. Your head is positioned directly above your neck and is not forced forward, backward or to either side. Your chin is level with the floor and your spine is straightened. Your muscles in your back have to be loose and tension-free.

Spine Positioning

You will develop an awareness of how your spine and body are positioned through assessing how you currently sit, stand and walk. As you do Alexander exercises, you will have to monitor your breathing: as you draw in each breath, you will inhale from your diaphragm instead of drawing in shallow breaths. This will help you relax and oxygenate your body. When you are sitting, the instructor points out any postural habits you have that deviate from the correct sitting posture, which will allow your spine and body maximum mobility. Your feet should be placed solidly on the floor, and your torso must rest comfortably over your pelvis. Your spine should be straight, your shoulders should be back, and your head should be positioned with your chin parallel to the floor. When you are standing, you need to place your body weight on both legs instead of one or the other. Your spine remains straight, and you must remain in full control of your head, neck and shoulders to maintain optimal posture as you stand and walk.

Challenges

The challenges that you face when learning the Alexander technique include the development of kinesthetic awareness and the development of the ability to hinder habitual responses. First, kinesthetic awareness involves an understanding of how your body moves: you should pay considerable attention to this, and kinesthetic awareness develops over time with practice. You will then need to learn to hinder the automated responses your body has to external stimuli, or when engaging in activity, so that you can implement bodily movements that help you keep greater control over your spine, neck, shoulders and head. Again, gaining control over automated responses and replacing them with new behaviors takes considerable time to achieve.

Healing Properties Of Neem Oil

The neem tree and neem oil heals a variety of conditions.

Neem oil is a vegetable oil that comes from the seed kernels of the neem tree. The neem tree and neem oil have many benefits and uses. According to the Neem Foundation, the neem tree is known as the "village pharmacy." Neem oil is widely-recognized in India for its healing properties and is highly regarded for its medicinal qualities.

Skin Healing Properties

Neem oil is a popular cure for skin conditions such as hives, eczema, psoriasis and acne. Massaging a mixture of neem oil with a carrier oil, like grape seed oil, directly onto the skin is an effective way to receive its healing benefits. Its healing abilities are attributed to the plant's anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Neem oil contains an aspirin-like compound that helps with acne conditions by ridding the skin of acne-causing bacteria. It also helps reduce redness and inflammation.

Fungal Healing Properties

Neem oil has been used to treat and heal fungal infections, such as Athlete's foot, ringworm and nail fungus. Neem oil contains two bio-active compounds, nimbidin and gedunin, that have anti-fungal properties and can effectively kill fungus. Using a few drops of neem oil, with grape seed oil as a base, can heal and prevent future fungal infections.

Hair and Scalp Healing Properties

Neem oil has been used as a treatment for dandruff, hair loss and head lice. Neem oil acts as a natural insect and pest repellent. Home Cure For A Yeast Infection

According to the Mayo Clinic, 75 percent of women will develop a yeast infection at some point in their lives. Yeast infections are caused by a fungus called candida albicans. It occurs naturally in the vagina, but if the natural balance is disturbed, an infection can develop. Symptoms include itching, abnormal odor and discharge. Fortunately, there are ways to cure a yeast infection at home with readily available products.

Types

Not all types of yeast infections can be cured at home without a trip to the doctor. Common yeast infections can be cured with over-the-counter products at home, but other types require prescription medication. According to the Mayo Clinic, bacterial vaginosis, atrophic vaginitis and trichomoniasis all require a trip to the doctor. If you're not sure whether you have a common yeast infection or something more serious, use an over-the-counter test kit before you start home treatment.

Treatment

Home treatment for yeast infections consists of using an anti-fungal suppository or cream. According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common ingredients in these treatments are tioconazole, miconazole or clotrimazole. You can purchase them at just about any drugstore or store with a pharmacy section. Simply follow the directions on the specific cream or suppository you purchase. Depending on the type, you may need to use it for up to seven days.

Pain Relief

It will take some time for your home treatment to cure your yeast infection. You will have pain and irritation in the meantime, which can be treated with cold compresses. Soak a clean washcloth in cold water or wet it and refrigerate it, then place it on the labia area to east the discomfort. Do this as often as necessary until your home cure is successful.

The Spartan Diet

The Spartans were noted for their austerity.

The Spartan diet is a lifestyle program stressing unprocessed foods, detoxification, and exercise. It takes its name from the ancient Mediterranean city-state, Sparta, whose people lived by an austere regimen.

Foods

Foods stressed by the Spartan diet include typical Greek and Mediterranean foodstuffs such as olive oil, garlic, whole grains, figs, apples, grapes etc. The emphasis is on whole, unprocessed foods consumed in moderation. The plan does not include meat from any domesticated animal or any non-organic produce.

Calorie Reduction

The diet stresses calorie reduction for health. The creators, health writer Amira Elgan and her husband Mike, suggest that a reduced calorie diet promotes not only weight loss but has other health benefits, such as greater longevity. The diet promotes never eating to fullness and feeling hunger between each meal in general.

Lifestyle

Aside from changes in diet, the Spartan diet program stresses other lifestyle changes. Athleticism is strongly emphasized, along with living a simple lifestyle.

Warnings

It should be noted first of all that while current research does support the existence of some benefits from calorie-restricted diets, this research is far from complete. There are also a number of risks attendant on calorie-restricted diets. Furthermore, the originators of the program put forward a somewhat romanticized version of life as an ancient Spartan and are not licensed health care professionals.

Make Herbinfused Olive Oil

Olive oil is an integral ingredient of many, many dishes. From tomato sauce to dressings, from being lightly drizzled on roasted vegetables to a dip for hard crusted bread. But the price tag of specialty olive oils such as herb infused olive oils is not cheap. Here is a way to make your own!

Instructions

1. Choose your herbs and spices. This is the fun part as you can make many variations of herb-infused olive oil. Some suggestions for herbs and spices are rosemary, garlic, basil, bay, chives, dill, mint, marjoram, tarragon and thyme. Again try a few different combinations and make a few different bottles.

2. Wash and dry your herbs. After washing, leave your herbs out to dry. Slightly tear or bruise the herbs so that they begin to release their aroma and flavors.

3. Heat the oil. Over a low flame, heat the oil until it is warm. Not hot, simply warm. This can best be done in a small stock pot or sauce pan.

4. Stuff herbs into bottles. Place your chosen herbs and spices into the bottles. A little goes a very long way, so don't overdue it. There's no need to overly stuff each bottle.

5. Pour oil into bottles. Pour the warm oil into the bottles over the herbs and spices. Let the bottles sit for a while until cool.

6. Place cork or rubber top onto bottle. Then set the bottle in a cool dark place for about a week.

7. Strain out herbs. After a week, strain out the herbs and spices. If you use garlic, be sure to refrigerate the oil rather than store it in a cool dark place to avoid botulism. Again, this oil should continue to be store out of direct sunlight and in a cool dark place. Congratulations, you have just learned make your very own herb-infused olive oil!

Make Shampoo From Coconut & Sunflower Oil

Many shampoos sold in stores are too harsh and drying to the hair. For people looking for an herbal product made from natural ingredients, homemade shampoos are a great alternative. These can be made with a variety of ingredients, but most start with a little bit of castile soap. Castile soap is a gentle cleaner that comes in the form of liquid and flakes. It can be mixed with your favorite oils, such as coconut and sunflower oil. Coconut oil is great for treating dandruff as well as damaged hair. Sunflower oil is great for dry hair and scalp.

Instructions

1. Heat the distilled water in a pot. Allow water to heat until it comes to a boil.

2. Steep the herbs. Place the rosemary, sage, and lemongrass into a tea strainer. Place the tea strainer into the boiling water. Let the herbs steep in the water for 30 to 45 minutes. Remove the tea strainer and herbs from the water.

3. Add the castile soap, coconut oil, sunflower oil, tea tree oil and jojoba oil to the water. Be sure to stir the water until the ingredients blend together. Let the mixture cool.

4. Pour the shampoo into a plastic container with lid. You now have about 12 oz. of homemade shampoo made from coconut and sunflower oil. Apply the shampoo to your hair as desired.

5. Refrigerate the leftover shampoo. Since homemade shampoos contain no preservatives, they must be refrigerated. Shampoo must be used within one week.

Write With Your Feet

Write With Your Feet

People who are born with no arms or lose their hands in an accident are really just like athletes who train their bodies to perform. Through practice and with incredible muscle control, these people train their toes and feet to move easily and gracefully while holding a pen and writing. These same muscles can be used for working a computer and any other mobility skills that require arms.

Instructions

1. Exercise the ankles so they can bear the strain involved in holding the foot up for long periods of time. The ligaments will also strain and need to be worked. With the heel stable on the floor, stretch and pull the top of the foot up and down. Put resistance on the motion with weighted pulleys to increase strength.

2. Practice picking up a pen or pencil with the big toe and the second toe. Push the toes flat down beside the pencil and lay the big toe on top of the object. Squeeze down on the pencil and lift it using your ankle.

3. Keep your heel on the floor as an anchor so that you can concentrate on moving the end of the pencil over the paper. As you being to learn this new way of writing, expect to tear up the paper until you become more proficient with practice.

4. Take breaks to avoid cramping. Give your ankles and lower legs plenty of range of motion exercise by turning them to each side and holding the stretch. Use ice to treat inflammation when you've been writing for hours and your Achilles tendon become swollen from overuse.

Dna Testing For Disease

DNA testing is an invaluable tool that helps doctors diagnose genetic and inherited disorders, so they can then determine treat them. Genetic testing has only been available in recent times because of breakthroughs in science and technology. The Human Genome Project has made finding genetic disorders easier and, like any other health test, DNA testing also carries certain risks.

Function

Testing human DNA helps doctors determine whether or not a patient is at risk of inheriting a disease from his family. The data gathered through the testing procedure is analyzed for the potential of genetic mutations that can lead to increased risk of certain diseases. Genetic testing allows for more timely treatment of the disease, which may prolong the lifespan of the patient with an inherited disease.

Types

Newborns and fetuses can be tested for genetic diseases. Newborn babies are routinely tested for genetic diseases such as phenylketonuria, which prevents the babies from being able to metabolize crucial amino acids. Fetuses are also tested for chromosomal abnormalities in order to help parents decide whether or not to abort the fetus if the abnormalities are severe enough. Parents can also be tested to determine whether or not they carry the gene for an inherited disorder, such as hemophilia, in order to calculate the chances of the child of having the genetic disorder.

How it Works

Genetic tests are done with hair, skin and blood samples or on amniotic fluid for fetal testing. The tests detect protein, gene and chromosomal abnormalities. Interpreting the results is rather difficult, even for professionally trained medical personnel. Mutations naturally occur in DNA. In order for doctors to interpret the results, family medical history must be taken into account. Even if test results show a genetic disease, it is impossible for doctors to be able to guess how severe the disease will be.

History

Genetic testing was made possible with the start of the Human Genome Project, which maps where genetic disorders are located on chromosomes. When the entire human genome is mapped, it will help scientists even more in testing for genetic disorders because more about human DNA will be known. The project uses landmarks on each gene that help doctors find the location of the cause of genetic disorders.

Drawbacks

Genetic testing does not have many drawbacks, but there are some considerations to take into account when getting tested. The testing itself does not involve many physical risks, but the results have greater implications. The diagnosis of a genetic disease may cause psychological stress. Also, discrimination in obtaining health insurance is a concern. Health insurance companies may not want to insure an individual with a lifelong genetic condition. While the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act in the United States ensures that people will not be discriminated against, other nations may not protect genetic confidentiality the same way.

Herbal Antiinflammatory For Asthma

Herbal Anti-Inflammatory for Asthma

Modern medicine or herbal remedies? When both work together it may be the solution to certain diseases, such as asthma. According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, over 22 million Americans were diagnosed with asthma in 2007. Some asthmatics are finding relief with herbal remedies.

Asthma

Close your eyes, take a slow deep breath, feel your lungs expand with crisp air. Repeat this step, but now imagine an elephant sitting on your chest. No air able to pass through--just desperation and hope of your next breath. You have just experienced an asthma attack. Asthma is a chronic lung disease and once triggered, the muscle around your airways constricts and inhibits airflow to the lungs. Cells in the airways produce mucus making it even more difficult to breathe. The inflammation of asthma can be caused by a number of triggers. A few examples are allergens-animal dander, dust, and mold, food containing dairy products, irritants like smoke, perfume, chemical fumes, and climate

TCM

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been around for thousands of years. The Mount Sinai School of Medicine was able to examine the effects of TCM with the support of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Studies showed asthmatics had "significant improvement" with the combination of anti-asthma herbal medicine Intervention combined with prednisone. TCM is also in a form of herb called Chinese skullcap. It has an antihistamine effect soothing the airway to the lung.

Herbs

Like TCM, herbal remedies have been around for thousands of years. There are numerous herbal remedies to assist in treating asthma. These remedies help by reducing inflammation and inhibiting future attacks. Examples of herbs you can use to prevent asthma symptoms are ginkgo biloba (reduces hypersensitivity by acting as an anti-PAF, platelet activating factor), tumeric (contains curcumin, which is a potent anti-inflammatory in chronic and acute conditions), licorice root (used to assist in calming breathing passageways), coltsfoot (acts as a cough suppressant), and ma huang/ephedra (practiced through TCM as a stimulant and thermogenic assisting in dilating airways).

Prevention

Prevention is the key. Asthma is a killer. Over 4,000 deaths a year are directly due to asthma; over 7,000 other deaths indicated asthma as a "contributing factor," according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Many deaths could be avoided with proper treatment and care. Prevent your asthma by taking action now. Start an Asthma Action Plan with the guidance of your physician. Get started with Herbal Remedies as a preventive.

Warning

Consult with your doctor before beginning any type of alternative treatment. Although herbs are natural they can interfere with prescription medicines and cause complications. Herbs such as ephedra need to be regulated due to their ability to increase blood pressure and heart rate. Do not let this deter you from the assistance of herbal remedies, but take caution as you should with any type of treatment.

Signs & Symptoms Of Panic Attacks

Panic attacks are sudden attacks of intense fear that can have severe and frightening effects. Although panic attacks are usually rare, according to the Mayo Clinic, frequent panic attacks may be a sign of panic disorder. Because some of the symptoms of panic attacks are similar to those of life-threatening conditions, people with symptoms should seek urgent treatment to avoid complications or worsening of their condition.

Heartbeat

Panic attacks can cause a sudden rise in heartbeat, along with chest pain, which may also resemble the signs of a heart attack.

Skin

According to the Mayo Clinic, sweating, hot flashes and chills are symptoms that may occur during the course of a panic attack.

Digestive

Nausea, dysphagia (trouble swallowing) and stomach cramps are signs of a panic attack that may result in weakness following the attack.

Respiratory

Hyperventilation, shortness of breath or a feeling of being choked are common respiratory symptoms of a panic attack.

Neurological

Neurological symptoms of panic attacks include dizziness, headaches, uncontrollable trembling and feeling faint.

Emotional

A person having a panic attack may feel that she is about to die at any minute and may be unable to express in words what is happening.

Prevention/Solution

Getting enough sleep, reducing stress, exercising regularly, joining a support group and avoiding chemical triggers such as nicotine, alcohol and drugs can help people with frequent panic attacks manage their symptoms.

Safety Measures When It Comes To Electricity

Electricity is a part of our everyday life, both in our homes and in the workplace. Many people want to save money and time by doing basic repairs and modifications themselves. While many repairs can be done by a do-it-yourselfer, you should follow certain safety procedures regardless of your level of expertise.

Know Your Limitations

Professional electricians study for hundreds of hours and are required to complete extensive hands-on training in order to receive their certification. This is done for a reason. There is a great deal to learn and understand regarding electricity and its applications. While the average homeowner may have the ability to replace a wall outlet or install a new light fixture, he may not have the ability to wire a breaker box panel. You must know and accept your limitations. Do not put your safety and the safety of your family at risk.

Lockout--Tagout

The most basic rule when working with any electrical device is to make certain the power is turned off. This is normally done at the nearest switch or electrical disconnect. If the item you are working on is plugged into an outlet, this means you simply unplug it. At the most extreme, you will turn the power off at the breaker box. Professionals will have locks and tags to make certain no one can turn the power back on while work is being done. The amateur can make up signs as well, warning people not to turn the power back on or plug the item back in. If you leave the project for any amount of time, double check to be certain the item is still disconnected before going back to work.

Check and Recheck

After you have disconnected the power, check to make certain the power is off. Even if you are looking at the plug or the breaker, check to make certain the power is off. Before turning the power back on, double check all wire ties, connections and junctions. Make certain no wires are touching and that all screws and wire nuts are secure. When you complete the modifications or repairs and turn the power back on, check to make certain all associated switches and devices are working properly. If you run into major problems, consult a professional electrician before turning the power back on. If there is a problem, turn the power back off until the problem is resolved.

Use Heat Patches On Sore Muscles

Heat therapy, along with its counterpart ice therapy, has been one of the most effective methods for treating sore muscles. Heat increases blood flow, reduces pain and is relaxing. Heat patches are one of the more popular items on the market today. They are convenient, because they allow you to be mobile while they work. Most heat patches are made of iron, water, carbon and salt. They work by the process of iron oxidation. When iron is exposed to oxygen, it generates heat, soothing sore muscles.

Instructions

1. Pick up a heat patch at your local drugstore or order from online retailers Drugstore.com, Shopping.com or NexTag (see Resources below). They carry heat patch brands such as Bengay, Beyond BodiHeat and Icy Hot.

2. Select a patch that will sufficiently cover the afflicted area. Regular-size patches will cover sore muscles in the arms, legs, neck and a portion of the shoulders. Large or extra large will be used for the entire lower back and upper back, as well as both shoulders and the hips.

3. Wash and dry the skin in the area where your sore muscles are. Most heat patches will not stick if the skin is wet.

4. Remove any protective film that is on the heat patch. Once the film is removed, the iron will oxidize, producing heat.

5. Apply the adhesive side of the patch to your sore muscles. Depending on the brand, it will take between 5 and 15 minutes for your heat patch to start working. Most heat patches will last at least 8 hours, but you may need to remove the patch if it becomes too hot or causes any discomfort.

6. Use most heat patches no more than once every 24 hours. Some heat patches are reusable, but most provide just a single use.

Find The Best Place To Buy Hearing Aids

If this is your first time to buy hearing aids, it can be a confusing task. It is crucial to find the right place and right professional because you will spend anywhere from just under $2,000 to a little over $6,000 for a pair of hearing aids. This will not be the last time you do this, because people replace hearing aids every five to seven years. The steps to purchasing a hearing aid require a medical examination, hearing test and hearing aid selection and fitting. The whole process will take three to four office visits and may take one month from start to finish. It all depends on how quickly these visits can be scheduled.

Instructions

1. Start with a visit to your family doctor or primary care physician. Many times a simple ear cleaning restores your hearing. The doctor may screen your hearing if he has the equipment. If your ears or hearing look abnormal then you will be referred to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist (called an otolaryngologist). He will examine you to determine if medical treatment or surgery will correct the problem. Make sure that you get appropriate referrals for the office visits so that your medical health insurance will cover the office charge.

2. Hearing care providers are audiologists and hearing aid dealers or hearing instrument specialists. Audiologists have either a master's degree (M.A. or M.S.) or a doctorate (Au.D. or Ph.D.), so they have had four years of college and up to four years of clinical training in "audiology school". They are trained to diagnose and non-medically treat hearing loss with hearing aids and auditory rehabilitation. They are state licensed. Hearing aid dealers or hearing instrument specialists can also check your hearing. They are qualified to do hearing screenings and basic hearing tests. Their primary focus is to sell hearing aids. They require at least a high school diploma to dispense hearing aids, are "apprenticeship" trained and certified by the NB-HIS National Board for Certification in Hearing Instrument Sciences. Hearing aid dealers/instrument specialists are either registered or licensed depending upon the state laws. Your family doctor or the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist will most likely send you to an audiologist for a formal and complete hearing test. This may include specialized diagnostics testing if you have one ear that is poorer than the other (unilateral or asymmetrical loss) or you have dizziness, vertigo, labyrinthitis, Meniere's disease or ringing in the ears (tinnitus). In order to select the best hearing aid you need accurate information about your hearing. Your hearing test must include a graph (called an audiogram) and speech discrimination or recognition scores. The audiogram shows the type and severity of your hearing loss. Your speech discrimination or recognition scores tell how clearly you can hear in each ear. They indicate how well you may understand speech with hearing aids. Your audiologist or hearing aid dealer will tell you if you need a hearing aid.

3. Have a medical examination and a hearing evaluation within six months prior to purchase. You should get a medical evaluation form signed by your physician that states that there are no medical conditions that prevent the use of hearing aids. You can sign a "medical waiver" if you are over the age of 18, but this is not recommended. Your medical health insurance may pay for a portion of your hearing test fees, so check with your insurance company before you schedule a visit.

4. Find a qualified hearing healthcare professional that you can trust because you will rely on her for advice, recommendations and guidance. You will also spend a lot of time with the professional so you need to feel comfortable with that person. It usually takes up to three or four office visits during the first 30 to 60 days to adjust to your hearing aids. ENT specialists and family medical doctors are rarely trained in hearing aids so you will need to meet with an audiologist or a hearing aid dealer/instrument specialist. Most people will discuss hearing aid options with the person who tested their hearing, so this may be the audiologist or hearing instrument specialist. Purchase your hearing aids at the office from a "good" professional whose primary focus is on being a health care provider, rather than a hearing aid seller. Look for someone who will listen to you and take the time to discover how your hearing loss affects your everyday living. That person should show competent knowledge of more than one brand of hearing aid and should match the type of digital technology, size or style, and options to your individual needs. He or she should be willing to work with you for as long as it takes to help you to hear better with the hearing aids.

5. Be sure your hearing aid professional has a current state license with the state licensing board. Check with the Better Business Bureau and state attorney general's office for any complaints. A recommendation from someone who purchased hearing aids from that professional is very helpful. You should be as diligent about selecting your hearing care professional just as you would do with any other health care provider. It is very important that you have a comfortable level of trust with your audiologist or hearing instrument specialist. You are going to rely on him for upcoming years but especially during the first month or so.

6. Learn about your hearing loss and your potential for better hearing with hearing aids. Everyone is capable of better hearing, but some will respond better than others. So you should be counseled on realistic expectations of what hearing aids can and cannot do. You should also be counseled on your experiences as you go through the process of adjusting to the new hearing aids. By the end of the visit you should have a good sense of the audiologist or hearing aid specialist's level of expertise and your ability to work together. It is hard to remember everything discussed in the office visit, so make sure you have pamphlets on hearing loss with general information about hearing aids and brochures about the hearing aids she has recommended. It is very important to have at least two choices and a price quote. The quote should explain the 30-day trial period, all costs, manufacturer's warranties, loss and damage insurance and all services the professional provides. If your medical health insurance plan has coverage for hearing aids, then you may need a referral for each office visit. Call your insurance company before you schedule a visit.

Wake Yourself Up Easier

Wake Yourself up Easier

Waking up each morning can be a very difficult task for some and nearly impossible for others. Tired of going to work with constant yawns? Barely able to motivate yourself to lift a finger during the day due to your tiredness? Here are some steps to help defeat the grogginess that comes with waking up.

Instructions

1. Get a full night's rest. You may have to go to bed a little earlier, but if you get a full 8 hours, you may feel a little less groggy in the morning.

2. Open your curtains or turn on the light as soon as your alarm goes off. Light will help your body become adjusted to the new day and you will wake up a bit easier rather than being left in the dark where your body will shut down again.

3. Eat a healthy breakfast. Fruits or grains are good. Eating a light, quick meal will give you the energy you need throughout the day.

4. Take a morning shower. Showers are your best bet at waking you up. That one morning shower will splash some energy into you to keep you going throughout the day.

5. Don't warm up. If your body becomes too warm, you become too comfortable. This leads to sleep or grogginess, which you want the opposite of.

6. Keep motivated. Have some type of goal and something to look forward to or reward yourself with through the day. This will encourage you to stay on your feet and away from your bed.

Treat Cold Sores With Acupuncture

Treat Cold Sores With Acupuncture

Cold sores, also called fever blisters, are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV1). Most people have some HSV1 antibodies in their blood at all times. It is not unusual to develop cold sores after being sick or going through a period of emotional stress. There are many over-the-counter and prescription medications that can treat cold sores. Acupuncture is a natural alternative that can be used to treat cold sores. Acupuncture can help manage the pain associated with cold sores, as well as realign the body's inner balance to reduce stress. Less stress can mean fewer cold sores in the future.

Instructions

1. Speak to your doctor about your wish to treat your cold sores with acupuncture if you want to try to get the appointments covered by your health insurance. Some insurance plans may require your primary care physician to refer you to a specialist.

2. Find a licensed acupuncturist in your area. The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) has a searchable directory of certified acupuncture providers on its website (see Resources below). Search by your zip code, phone number or city and state.

3. Write down some notes about the occurrence of your cold sores to give to the acupuncturist. Factors you may want to include are how often you get them, what the pain feels like ("sharp," "dull," "radiating" and "constant" are useful terms) and how much stress you feel in your life when the cold sores occur.

4. Eat a small meal or snack 2 hours before your first acupuncture appointment. An empty stomach combined with acupuncture can cause dizziness or lightheadedness. Refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages before your appointment.

5. Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves and pant legs that can be rolled up easily. Many of the pressure points used to treat both the pain and stress associated with cold sores are between the ankles and knees and between the wrists and elbows.

6. Avoid straining your body in any way for 2 hours before your acupuncture appointment. This includes heavy lifting, sexual activity or even just rushing around to get to your appointment on time. These activities weaken your body and decrease the effectiveness of the treatments.

Utilize Essential Techniques For Lomi Lomi Massage

Utilize Essential Techniques for Lomi Lomi Massage

Lomi Lomi means "massage" in the Hawaiian language. It is the traditional form of Polynesian and Hawaiian massage based on the Huna philosophy, which believes everything in creation seeks harmony and love. The purpose of Lomi Lomi massage is to restore those in the recipient by removing energy blockages and restoring the flow of energy in the body.

Instructions

1. Prepare the recipient for Lomi Lomi by having him lie face down directly on the massage table without a sheet underneath. Drape the client only with a small towel over the buttocks and between the legs.

2. Begin with a silence. Then say a short prayer or blessing, asking for the appropriate healing to come to the recipient.

3. Ask the recipient to state his healing intention. This is the recipient's goal for the Lomi Lomi treatment.

4. Apply Lomi Lomi massage strokes to the recipient's body. Use broad, sweeping strokes administered with the hands, wrists and forearms. Move the strokes all over the body, rather than concentrating on one area.

5. Massage more than one part of the body at a time. This prevents the brain from focusing on a single stimulation and promotes relaxation.

6. Add some humming or chanting. Humming, chanting and breath work performed by the Lomi Lomi practitioner increase the energy flow between the therapist and the client.

7. Learn to hula dance. Traditional Lomi Lomi practitioners include hula dance movements as they move around the table. These movements, like chanting or breath work, increase positive energy flow during the treatment.

Metaphysical Properties Of Amethyst

Amethyst is thought by some to be used for protection and healing.

For centuries, amethyst has been considered a powerful and mysterious gemstone. Known for its ability to bring clarity of thought and wisdom, this purple crystal decorated the robes of Jewish high priests and adorned Catholic crosses, and was highly prized by European royalty. Throughout the ages, people have also discovered what they believe are protective and healing properties associated with amethyst.

Preventing Drunkenness

Amethyst was used by ancient Greeks to avoid drunkenness.

The word "amethyst" comes from the Greek word "amethystos," meaning "not intoxicated." The Greeks associated amethyst with Dionysus, the god of wine and debauchery, and the purple color was said to be wine stains. Revelers would sometimes drink from amethyst cups to avoid doing something they might later regret while drinking. A pinch of ground amethyst mixed in wine is said to have a sobering effect. It is also believed to help quell addictions.

Protection

Amethyst was valued for its purported protective qualities. Farmers kept it to protect their crops. Some people used it for personal protection against wild animals, or against the enemy during battle. Still others believed that amethyst held the power to drive out evil spirits. It is used today in many protection charms, and to block out negative energy during spells and rituals.

Clarity of Mind

Amethyst is believed to protect against seduction, including corruption of thought, as it is closely linked with the spiritual realm. This stone was historically used in Catholic jewelry, notably adorning the papal ring. It is associated with chastity, truth and peace. Amethyst's calming properties were believed to help to clear the mind when meditating or dreaming, or to increase psychic abilities.

Healing

The healing aspects of amethyst have led to its popularity in alternative medicine. Healers advocate the use amethyst as relief for many physical ailments including headaches, anxiety, and arthritis. Rubbing one's skin with this stone is said to slow signs of aging, and soothe insect bites.

Stay Cool During Sweltering East Coast Summer Months

Taking a dip in a pool is an easy way to cool off.

Summer on the U.S. East Coast means long, hot and humid days where it feels like nothing you do is enough to help you stay cool. Temperatures soar above 100 degrees in some locations, such as Washington, D.C., and New York City. Many older homes were built without air conditioning, which just exacerbates the situation. But there are alternative methods for staying cool, even if you do not have a working air conditioning system.

Instructions

1. Take an old T-shirt, soak it in cold water in your sink, wring it out and then either wrap it around your neck or wear it. If you plan on wearing the wet T-shirt, you are going to want to avoid using one that is white because it will be see-through once it gets wet.

2. Fill your bathtub with cool water. It doesn't have to be freezing cold or so cold that it is uncomfortable to sit inside the bathtub. Start by filling the tub with lukewarm water or water that is mildly cool and see how your body reacts to being submerged at that temperature. After your body acclimates to the water, drain some out and refill the tub with water that is a little bit cooler. You can keep doing this for as long as you want; you will remain sufficiently cool for quite some time after you get out of the tub.

3. Spread out three or four towels on your floor and place your fan on top of them. Place a blocks of ice in front of the fan. Adjust the setting on your fan so that it blows in one direction rather than oscillating. Sit in front of the fan in the direction it is blowing. The air blowing across the ice creates a cooling effect and acts as a makeshift air conditioner. Depending on how hot it is inside your home, you may need to change the block of ice frequently. You can also do this at night, aiming the fan to blow across the ice and toward your bed.

4. Cook spicy foods--anything based with curry, jerk or other varieties of hot spices, hot peppers and hot sauce will suffice. Though eating food that is hot to taste may sound like a bad idea for staying cool, this is what people eat in regions of the world where hot weather is the norm, such as Jamaica. Spicy foods stimulate heat receptors in your mouth, which in turn causes perspiration, and when you sweat, your body cools as the perspiration evaporates. Eating spicy food sounds like an odd approach to staying cool, but it works, according to an article published in Great Britain's "Daily Mail."

5. Close your windows and draw the curtains or shades to keep excess sunlight from shining through your windows. This will help keep the inside of your home cooler for most of the day, although if it is extremely hot outside, you're going to need to open the windows later in the afternoon and use your makeshift air conditioner as in Step 3.

6. Fill a bucket with cold water and soak your feet. This helps cool you off instantly, because there are two major arteries that run down the sides of your ankles; exposing them to cold water will cool you off quickly.

7. Fill a spray bottle with cold water, turn the nozzle so that it is on the mist setting and spray yourself every minute or so. The cold water on your skin will not only help to cool you off immediately, but it also will help you stay cool longer as the water evaporates--much like what happens when perspiration on your body evaporates.

8. Buy an above-ground swimming pool, fill it with cold water from your garden hose and then add about a dozen bags of ice to make the water extra cold. When it's extremely hot outside, it won't take the ice long to melt. Once nearly all of the ice is melted, hop in and have a good soak.

The Total 7day Body Cleanse

Cleansing and detox diets are popular plans today. The market has been flooded with a plethora of these get-healthy-quick miracle cures. While many have purchased products such as the Total 7-Day Body Cleanse, people are seeing mixed results. Does them programs offer any benefits?

What Is a Cleansing Diet?

The theory behind cleansing diets is fairly basic. It is thought that through exposure to various contaminants present in our food sources and the environment, our bodies gradually accumulate toxins. A cleansing diet, which typically is a restrictive diet supplemented with herbal extracts, helps bodies purge these toxins and be restored to a more healthful state.

What Is the Total 7-Day Body Cleanse?

The 7-Day Total Body Cleanse is a commercial plan that involves one week of taking in only water, herbal teas, sea salt, and organic fruits and vegetables. This is augmented with a proprietary supplements plan. The program costs about $240, and its promised benefits include increased energy, weight loss and detoxification of the body.

Does the Cleanse Work?

The product mostly consists of roots and herbs, but the main ingredient is fiber. While fiber can flush out the digestive track, it cannot undo years of damage in seven days. These products are sold as nutritional supplements and therefore are outside the control of the Food and Drug Administration. Because of this, manufacturers do not have to prove the claims on their labels. In general, however, there is no tangible evidence that that these programs are any more effective than a regime of balanced diet and moderate exercise.

What Are the Risks?

There is typically little risk in in eating fruits and vegetables for a week with herbal supplements. But some people may be allergic to these herbs, so it is best to examine the labels carefully.

Considerations

Critics say cleaning diets or detox programs enable some people to feel that years of poor living habits can be undone in a brief time span. This, in turn, could potentially prompt them to continue indulging in bad habits, believing the next cleanse will right whatever wrongs have occurred in the interim.

Herbal Hemorrhoids Cure

Hemorrhoids are the stretched and inflamed veins in the rectal area. They can occur inside or protrude outside the rectum. Swollen hemorrhoids are caused by constipation, pregnancy, obesity, physical exertion, a low-fiber diet, chronic constipation, standing for a long time and prolonged sitting. Herbal cures can help relieve painful, itchy, burning and bleeding hemorrhoids.

Psyllium

Mix 3g psyllium with 8 oz water and drink daily. Psyllium is sold under brand names like Metamucil. It is a high-fiber supplement made from the husk of the psyllium plant. This adds bulk to your digestive system and creates soft stools. You need to drink eight 8-oz glasses of fluid each day or psyllium will turn into a bowel obstruction.

Witch Hazel

Apply witch hazel directly to hemorrhoids. Witch hazel is astringent and antibacterial. It constricts swollen blood vessels and soothes irritated areas. Avoid the pain of wiping with dry, rough toilet paper and use witch hazel wipes to gently clean yourself. A witch hazel sitz bath will soothe hemorrhoids. Pour 1 pt witch hazel into a couple of inches of warm water. Sit in the sitz bath for at least 15 minutes.

Comfrey

Apply comfrey as a topical balm as needed. Comfrey is rich in allantoin, which is anti-inflammatory and promotes healing. The mucilage contained in comfrey soothes irritations. Look for comfrey balms in health food stores. Make your own by mixing powdered comfrey with a little vegetable oil to form a paste. Apply with a cotton ball and leave it on until the next time you bathe.

Butternut

Take 20 to 30 drops butternut tincture three times a day. Butternut is an effective stool softener and should be taken as long as your hemorrhoids are painful. This will reduce the pressure during bowel movements. Check with your care provider before taking butternut if you are pregnant.

Figwort

Take 20 to 30 drops of figwort tincture three times a day. Figwort works slowly so you may not see an improvement for several weeks. Wait three weeks before judging the results. Figwort is a good treatment for chronic hemorrhoids since it reduces swollen veins.
