Kinds Of Throat Cancer

Learning about throat cancer can be a confusing thing because "throat cancer" isn't a technical term. There are various types of cancer located in the throat that are often all referred to as "throat cancer," but each is a very different diagnosis. It is important to know the specific kind of throat cancer you want to learn about in order to be adequately educated.

Cancer of the Larynx, or Voice Box

Symptoms indicative of all kinds of throat cancer are a persistent sore throat, ear pain, pain when swallowing, hoarseness in the voice, or a lump in the neck. There are three treatment options: radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or surgery. Surgery is the most common treatment, and the most efficient. Depending on the severity of the diagnoses, a portion of the larynx may be taken out or, in the most severe case, the entire larynx is removed. If only a portion is removed, radiation therapy is often recommended to kill any traces of cancer that may remain. Larynx cancer is often thought to be the worst kind of throat cancer, due to the possibility of a tracheostomy--the entire removal of the larynx, resulting in the patient losing the voice and needing the use of a speaking device to help with talking. However, as long as the entire larynx isn't removed, the voice will still be preserved.

Hypopharyngeal Cancer

The hypopharynx is located at the bottom of the throat connecting to the trachea and esophagus. The most common treatment option is surgery to remove the diseased area. In the most mild of cases, small areas of tissue including the lymph nodes may be removed, or if it is more severe, parts of both the larynx and pharynx are removed. The most extreme kind of surgery is the removal of the entire larynx and part of the pharynx. Fortunately, chemotherapy is often used prior to surgery to shrink the size of the cancer, potentially preventing the loss of the larynx.

Cancer of the Thyroid

Thyroid cancer is becoming more and more possible to treat. There are four kinds of cancer of the thyroid: papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic. Papillary is the most common thyroid cancer and the most treatable, and anaplastic is the least common and the most difficult to treat. Surgery is the most recommended treatment for each kind of thyroid cancer--a partial or total removal of the thyroid. In both cases, radiation is often done following the surgery to remove any cancer that might have been left behind. If the entire thyroid is removed, supplementary hormone treatment will be necessary for life, as the hormones produced by the thyroid determine blood pressure, heart rate, and other vitally important functions of the body.

Oropharyngeal cancer

The oropharynx is the middle part of the pharynx and includes the tonsils and part of the tongue. In addition to the common symptoms associated with throat cancer, pain behind the breastbone, a cough, or an unexplained weight loss are all indicators of oropharyngeal cancer. Either chemotherapy or radiation is done first to avoid any unnecessary tissue removal. Surgery is done as a last resort due to the difficulty in removing some portions of the oropharynx.

Nasopharyngeal Cancer

The nasopharynx is located at the back of the nose toward the base of the skull. It is often considered a type of oral cancer; however, it commonly leads to other areas of the throat, resulting in a form of throat cancer. The same symptoms for throat cancer are shared with nasopharyngeal cancer but also include a lump in the nose, difficulty speaking or breathing, nosebleeds, headaches, trouble hearing, and ringing in the ear. Radiation therapy is often the first kind of treatment used, but if it isn't completely effective, surgery is then required to remove any cancer that was not responsive to treatment.

5 Propaganda Techniques

The average American is exposed to as many as 5,000 advertisements daily.

Propaganda techniques are commonly encountered in commercial advertising but these techniques, or variations of them, are used by political campaigns and nearly every other organization that needs to persuade the public. The five techniques are known as bandwagon, testimonial, transfer, repetition and emotional words.

Bandwagon

The bandwagon technique seeks to convince people that "everyone" is doing something, or likes something and you should too. This method plays on an individual's need for social acceptance. One example of this is seen in political rallies with large cheering crowds, waving flags and cheering or booing in unison. In advertising it is common. Examples include a 1959 Elvis Presley album titled "50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong: Elvis' Golden Records, Vol. 2" and any TV programs that claims to be "the show America is talking about."

Testimonial

Testimonials use people to persuade other people of the value or importance of something. This is most frequently done with celebrity endorsements but it is also done with experts or average people. In politics, this can be as simple as having the president or another popular political leader endorse an idea or point of view. In advertising, examples include Jenny Craig having celebrities talk about their diet plans in commercials and any advertisement that uses a doctor or someone dressed as a doctor to say something is healthy.

Transfer

The transfer technique involves using symbolism to give virtues to a product or idea. This is sometimes done with celebrities, such as putting athletes on a Wheaties box or putting Michael Jordan's name on sneakers. Sometimes placing, for example, an American flag next to a product can convince people that it is somehow patriotic. Products also might be placed in a hospital setting to give the impression that a product is healthy or somehow endorsed by medical workers. This type of propaganda is most frequently found in print advertising

Repetition

Repetition is the most frequently used propaganda and advertising technique. Repetition works under the assumption that the more often people hear something the more likely they are to believe it, even on a subconscious level. In politics this is known as "staying on message." A politician, during a campaign, speaks to different groups of people every day, but always includes the same handful of points that they wish to make. In advertising, it works basically the same way. An advertiser will attempt to convey the same handful of points about a product in all of their advertising including television, radio, print and digital.

Emotional Words

The emotional words technique uses strong language to attempt to persuade people. This can mean an impassioned speech but relates more often to key words that trigger emotion in people. For example, putting the word "free" in an ad causes it to be looked at more closely even if the product is not free. Putting the word "important" or "urgent" at the top of a page will make people more likely to look at it. In politics this technique is used almost constantly. Referring to an idea as "left wing" or "right wing," "liberal" or "conservative" automatically triggers certain responses to the idea. Calling a foreign government a "regime" automatically implies certain attributes about that government.

Autism Symptoms In Children

Autism is a developmental disorder that affects 1.5 million Americans. As many as 3 to 6 children in 1,000 may have autism, and that rate appears to be increasing. Whether the number of children is actually increasing, or if diagnostic procedures make it possible to diagnose more children, is matter of debate among professionals.

Identification

Classic symptoms of autism include difficulties with verbal and nonverbal communication, impaired social interactions, repetitive behaviors and limited activities that may include an unusual obsessive interest in peculiar or unusual topics. The severity of symptoms and degree of impairment varies from mild to severe, causing a wide range of behaviors and impairments classified as autism. Children may exhibit symptoms as early as 6 months, but generally do not meet the diagnostic criteria for autism until 3 years or older. Severely impaired children exhibit language delays evident by the age of 3, but milder behavioral impairments may not be obvious until 4 to 5 years old.

Features

Babies and children with autism disorder may fail to develop normal interactions with parents. They may show a lack if interest in those around them and fail to respond to verbal or nonverbal cues, focusing on one object for prolonged periods. Young children may not respond to their own names and appear to be oblivious to the world around them.

Function

Many young children with autism develop obsessive repetitive behaviors such as rocking, spinning or twirling and may engage in self-abusive behaviors like head banging and biting. Delayed language development or unusual language usage may indicate autism. Autistic children often refer to themselves by name instead of using "I" or "me," and speak with unusual cadence and tone. Often children talk without regard to the reactions of others and may focus on topics of no interest to others, but seem unaware of the fact. Children with autism experience difficulty reading people and noticing social cues. They may fail to recognize tone of voice or facial expressions, and lack empathy for others as they do not understand what others are feeling or thinking. They often avoid eye contact and do not observe facial features or body language of others. Playing with other children presents a challenge, as the child with autism is unaware or unresponsive to the needs of others and may use playmates as props for his own benefit but does not seek interaction. Children with autism resist physical touch and withdraw from hugs or cuddling. They often do not bond with a parent and appear cold and unresponsive to emotional physical expressions of love and closeness. They may be overly sensitive to loud noises, bright lights and touch.

Effects

Autism is a lifelong disorder of unknown origins. Symptoms may appear to lessen with time, but the underlying disorder does not. Early intervention and proper educational techniques may provide social skill instruction and may alter behavior, but the lack of empathy and difficulty understanding others may pose lifelong challenges. Speech and language instruction may improve language skills, but deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication continue to exist.

Potential

Many adults with autism are able to live healthy, happy lives, and many are able to live independently. They may attend post secondary school and pursue careers requiring extensive study, often pursuing a narrow focus of interest and developing considerable expertise in the area.

Foot Spa Detoxification

Foot spa detoxification has become a popular treatment at spas, but could be expensive if done on a regular basis. Buying your own foot spa allows you to detox your body in the comfort of your home, at any time. While shopping for your own detox foot spa, it is important to find a quality product at an affordable price, as opposed to finding the cheapest option.

What is Foot Spa Detoxification?

Toxins accumulate within the body due to a poor diet of processed or refined foods, pollution and stress. Detox allows the body to release toxins that cause a lack of energy, poor circulation, joint pain and tension, lack of sleep and harm to the immune system.

Using foot spa detoxification, impurities are drawn out of the pores in the feet. Using a foot spa is more effective than other forms of body detox, due to the higher amount of sweat glands located on the feet.

Detoxing foot spas incorporate ion charges to attract negative or positive charges from the body, helping to release them from the bloodstream. Once toxins are released, individuals experience more energy, a boost to their immune system and healthier skin.

Frequency of Foot Detoxification

By having a foot detoxification spa in the home, you are able to release toxins from the body more frequently and economically. You should do a foot detox every other day for 14 sessions, and then refrain from detoxing for a week. For those over 50 years old, the suggested usage is one detox every three days for 14 spa sessions, and a two-week break in between detoxifying.

After Foot Detoxification

After you have completed a session of detoxing, drink plenty of water to flush out any remaining toxins from the body. It is also suggested that you take a daily vitamin and mineral supplement to keep valuable minerals within the body, since some may be released with the toxins during the foot spa detoxification. Natural minerals attach to toxins or harmful metals in the body, so detoxing may reduce the amount in the body.

To keep the body balanced and healthy after a foot spa detox, refrain from smoking, drinking alcohol and eating foods high in sugar and salt and get daily exercise. Incorporate fruits and vegetables into the diet to get important vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Treat Fibromyalgia With Trigger Point Therapy

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder that makes it hard to move around and complete even the simplest of physical tasks. People will do just about anything to solve problems when it comes to chronic pain. If conventional medicines don't work, trigger point therapy can be a smart alternative.

Instructions

1. Stretch the joints and muscles in your body that are causing you the most pain. This will prepare the muscles to be worked by allowing oxygenated blood to flow in. The trigger points are small portions of a muscle that contract involuntarily and subsequently cause pain and dysfunction. Be sure to find the trigger points properly, as these may not always be the spots that hurt the most. But they are the causes of the pain.

2. Apply massage oil or medicated balm to the trigger point area. Heated ointments also increase blood flow and can help loosen up a muscle that is causing you pain. This also reduces friction on your skin, allowing you to massage the trigger point more effectively.

3. Press into the trigger point with a massage tool. These are widely available at department and drug stores and come in all different types. You should pick one that is more angular than round, as you'll want to be able to apply as much directed pressure to the trigger point as you can.

4. Practice shiatsu and other techniques on the trigger point. Shiatsu massage generally involves hard strokes performed with a thumb. You should apply and release pressure on the trigger point slowly, but you will have to use heavy pressure. Not only will light pressure be ineffective as spasms are persistent, but it may cause your muscles to contract as a defense mechanism.

5. Repeat your stretches after you apply repeated pressure to all of your trigger points to get lactic acid flowing from your muscles. Perform this procedure as often as you can and take note how well it is working.

Is The Lap Band Permanent

Is the Lap Band Permanent?

Lap band surgery is a weight loss surgery in which an adjustable silicone band is put around the top of the stomach. The band creates a stomach pouch that is smaller and restricts the amount of food that can be eaten. The lap band restricts food intake and controls hunger.

Advantages

The lap band is not permanent. It is adjustable and reversible, which gives the lap band an advantage over other weight loss surgeries. Other advantages include no cutting or stapling of the stomach and a quicker recovery.

Recovery

The surgery typically takes an hour to perform, and most patients leave the hospital after 24 hours. Most patients can return to work in a week and begin exercising four to six weeks after.

Candidates for Surgery

Good candidates for the lap band procedure have a BMI (body mass index) of 40 or above; this is considered being morbidly obese. Males must be at least 100 pounds overweight and females must be 80 pounds overweight.

Contraindications

Contraindications for the lap band procedure include severe heart or lung disease; any inflammatory disease, such as Crohn's disease; or an autoimmune disease, such as lupus.

Considerations

Disadvantages of the lap band are the need for regular follow-up appointments and slower weight loss. A medical device is implanted, which may slip and reduce the effectiveness.

The Effects Of Chemotherapy On The Heart

Chemotherapy treatments can be hard on your organs, including your heart. The use of toxic chemical agents to ward off disease may weaken the heart muscle and make you more susceptible to heart disease.

Chemotherapy and heart function

When administered in high doses, chemotherapy can adversely affect your heart by compromising its capacity to operate normally.

Debilitating effects are rare

The majority of chemotherapy patients do not suffer permanent heart damage. Some types of chemotherapy pose little or no threat to your heart health.

The risk of chemotherapy instigating heart problems is most likely to occur during infusion (intravenous application) of the drug.

Prolonged treatment and heart damage

When chemotherapy treatments continue for an extended period of time, your susceptibility to heart problems accelerate. The risk of heart disease is strongly influenced by the total amount of chemotherapy you receive over a lifetime.

Precautionary measures

Prior to starting chemotherapy treatment, your doctor may test your heart to be sure it is functioning at a healthy level. She may decide to use a different type of chemotherapy if you have a history of heart disease.

Keeping a watchful eye on chemo treatments

The total amount of chemotherapy you receive will be carefully monitored by your doctor to lower the possibility of heart damage.

Beyond chemo

There are some newer cancer treatments that may threaten heart health but any debilitating effects appear to be temporary. One such drug, trastuzumab (Herceptin), is used to treat breast cancer.

Report unusal symptoms at once

Be sure to notify your doctor or chemotherapy administrator if you feel pain in your chest or notice other symptoms that may be indicative of a heart attack.

Make Great Changes In Your Life!

It has been said, "The only thing constant IS change." However, many struggle with the inevitable winds of change for fear of the great unknown. Many desire transformation, but don't know where to begin. They are crippled, even paralyzed by fear. Yet "fear" is the basis for the "stagnant" conditions that we so often want to rid ourselves of, but don't know where to begin. This confusion fosters feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, thus inducing the illusion that we are "stuck". But take heart...there's no such thing as "stuck"...

Instructions

1. What is your sense of direction? What changes do you wish to make? Where do you want to go? Where do you want to be? Plot a course, this is your direction.

2. Faith is "knowing" that the "successful change" already exists! That's right, it's already happening, and though you cannot see it with your "eyes" still hold to the knowing that this fabulous change is ALREADY a grand success!

3. Courage is the passion which fuels your change. Don't back down. Stop waiting to feel brave. You have to just BE brave and all else will follow. As we were once reminded, "Leap and the net will appear."

4. Release the need to "control" every, little, tiny step. Allow the greatness that IS you to inspire you to the right action. If it doesn't feel "natural" to you instinctively, DON'T DO IT! Inspired action is effortless and always feels right.

Diet For Gastroenteritis In Children

Gastroenteritis, also known as a stomach virus, can make your child miserable for a few days. Primary symptoms of gastroenteritis include vomiting, diarrhea and upset stomach. While your child is sick, it is important to know prevent dehydration, treat dehydration when it occurs and change your child's diet as necessary.

Preventing Dehydration

Because your child can lose a lot of fluids from both vomiting and diarrhea, it is important to make sure that he is drinking enough. If your baby is still nursing or formula fed, try spacing the feedings more closely, but offering less during each feeding. In addition, give your child an oral rehydration solution (ORS) as long as the vomiting or diarrhea continues. For older children, offer frequent but small amounts of fluids.

Treating Dehydration

If your child seems to be losing a lot of fluids through vomiting or diarrhea, consider giving her ORS regardless of her age. If she rejects it, try offering her freezer pops made of ORS (sold commercially) or flavored ORS. Do not offer your child apple juice, soft drinks or broth, as these can exacerbate the diarrhea. If your child shows signs of severe dehydration, such as lack of urination for 8 to 12 hours, lack of tears when crying, dry mouth, sunken eyes or unusual drowsiness or fussiness, call your doctor immediately.

Changes in Diet

If the diarrhea and vomiting are minimal, your child may not need to make any changes in his diet. Try to feed your child as usual, choosing healthy foods that will not irritate his stomach, such as bread, potatoes, cereal, bananas, applesauce, vegetables and yogurt. Do not put your child on the BRAT diet, which suggests that you eat only bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. These foods should be supplemented by other healthy foods to replace the nutrients that your child is losing.

What Is The Difference Between Dizziness & Vertigo

Dizziness and vertigo are similar conditions that may strike without warning. However, there are some differences between the two.

Dizziness: Identification

With dizziness, you have a sense of light-headedness or may feel faint. You may feel as though your head is spinning and may feel disoriented. Your balance may also be affected, increasing risk of injury.

Causes

Dizziness often remains unexplained, but can be caused by ear problems or can be a side effect of medication. Dizziness can also be a consequence of a heart or brain condition or of advancing age.

Vertigo: Identification

Vertigo produces a sensation of spinning, whirling or turning. Many people experiencing vertigo feel that the room is actually moving and have difficulty standing or walking.

Causes

Headaches, such as migraines, may be a cause of vertigo. Positional vertigo may occur when you move your head quickly and can result in nausea, vomiting, imbalance and light-headedness. Other known causes are Meniere's disease, vestibular neuritis, perilymph fistula and inner ear disease.

Treatment

It is important to see your doctor for correct diagnosis and treatment of dizziness or vertigo. Medical treatment of the cause of the condition will often relieve the symptoms.

Care For A Lobe Piercing

Ear piercings are very popular in the world of fashion and are acceptable for both women and men. However, piercings aren't seen as fashionable if paired with a nasty infection. There are many ways to take care of your ear piercings so that infections do not occur.

Instructions

1. Clean the piercing twice a day with antibacterial soap. The easiest way is to clean the piercing while showering. The hot water will soften any crusty scabbing that may have formed around the jewelry and make it easier to wipe off. Put a lather of soap on the piercing and the jewelry itself, and spin the jewelry so that the soap will get inside the hole for a more thorough cleaning. Rinse the area with water, making sure that all the soap is removed.

2. Use sea salt soaks to clean the piercing. Fill a clean cup with 8 ounces of water and 1/4 teaspoon of the sea salts and stir until the salts have dissolved. Dip the piercing in the cup or moisten a clean cloth with the solution and place it on the piercing. Soak the piercing for 10 minutes the first time and then 5 to 10 minutes any other time. Pat the piercing dry with a clean, disposable cloth.

3. Leave the piercing alone between cleanings. Do not play with the piercing throughout the day. This could lead to additional irritation.

4. Continue to clean the piercing two times a day for 10 days, and then decrease the amount of cleanings to once a day. Overcleaning could dry out the ear lobe, leaving the skin chapped. This can expose the piercing to bacteria and dirt.

What Are The Different Types Of Snow Crystals

In 1951, the International Commission on Snow and Ice developed the International Classification System and officially named classification types for seven types of snow crystals. Irregular forms, the most common of the seven types, are natural snow crystals that cannot be attributed to one of the other six classifications.

Needles

Needles form at around 23 degrees F, and resemble long and thin column-like needles.

Plates

Plates, which form at 28 degrees, have symmetrical designs and often form elaborate, intricate and radiating patterns.

Columns

Columns, similar to needles, are hollow on both ends; thereby producing a straw-like crystal. A column's hollow end points are not visible to the naked eye.

Capped Columns

Capped columns are a combination of column and plate crystals. Caps are distinguishable due to the existence of plates on both ends, which results in a resemblance to a thread spool.

Stellar Crystals

Stellar crystals, most often associated with holiday imagery, are classified due to their tree-like branching from the center. Fern-like dendrites have leaf-like designs radiating from the tree-like branches.

Spatial Dendrites

This crystal is often referred to as a radiating dendrite. It is easily distinguishable due to radiating arms or plates extending in all three dimensions from the center.

Use Acai Berry For Weight Loss

Use Acai Berry for Weight Loss

I learned of a new superfood called acai berry that is used for weight loss. Since I'm always wary of big weight loss claims made by certain companies, I decided to do some research before I actually jumped on board.

The verdict? I've discovered that acai berry is filled with vitamins and minerals that can aid in weight loss, building muscle and increasing overall energy-and is rich in antioxidants, fatty acids, fiber and other plant compounds that can increase your health.

I don't believe that acai Berries hold a "magic key" that will help you lose weight, but it will help make your body healthy. When your body is healthy and well-balanced, it will be easier to reach your perfect weight.

Instructions

1. Purchase fresh, frozen or dried acai berries if you can find them. Or you can purchase them in this form online. Since it is a nutrient-rich food, you can cook with it and add it to your favorite recipes. It works well as a cereal topping, in granola, smoothies, yogurt, on low-fat ice cream and in things like muffins and cookies (as long as they're low fat).

2. Find acai in the form of a liquid extract. The benefit of taking acai in this form is that the nutrients will be super concentrated. Also, if you live in a climate where acai berries don't grow, this can be a good way to get it as fresh and concentrated as possible.

3. Take acai in capsule form. Capsules are good if you want to take acai as easily as possible and still receive the benefits. If you make it a part of your daily vitamin and mineral regimen it will be easier to take it consistently.

Early Hiv Symptoms

The early symptoms of HIV resemble many common viral illnesses and may not cause you to suspect that you are infected with a life-threatening disease. Although you may not get a positive laboratory test result for HIV until up to six months after you were infected, you may experience some early symptoms and are at risk of infecting others. Consider this information from the Centers for Disease Control and the Mayo Clinic about early HIV symptoms.

Swollen Glands

Swollen glands in your neck, armpits or genital area are an early sign of HIV infection and may persist for several weeks.

Headaches

Headaches may be frequent or severe two to four weeks after you are infected with HIV and may cause you have mood and sleep changes.

Fever

A persistent, mild fever of 100 F or less is an early sign of HIV infection that lasts for up to four weeks and may return at later stages of the disease.

Tiredness

Persistently feeling tired without having exerted yourself is an early symptom of HIV that may cause you to need more sleep than usual.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea that lasts for more than one week and is not accompanied by vomiting or abdominal cramping may be a sign of early HIV infection.

Sore Throat

Soreness and redness of your throat may occur a few weeks after you are infected with HIV and may last for up to two weeks.

Rashes

Rashes on your skin and in your mouth, along with flushing of your face are early symptoms of HIV that result from your body's reaction to infection.

Neck Problems And Pain

As with most other parts of the body, the neck is susceptible to injury and normal wear and tear. Most people experience neck pain at some point or another. While some neck pain may only last for a short period of time, it may also be chronic, lasting for several weeks or more.

Strains and Spasms

The neck muscles can become very fatigued and strain or spasm due to overuse and lack of stretching. Daily habits such as looking up at a computer screen, hunching over, and sleeping on one's stomach can all eventually lead to strained neck muscles. This can lead to chronic neck pain or even refer pain to other parts of the body. A person with chronic headaches, for example, may actually have underlying neck problems.

Joint Wear

Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that mainly affects the cartilage. Healthy cartilage covers the ends of bones within a joint to help absorb shock, but cartilage affected by osteoarthritis wears away and bones begin to rub together. If the neck has been affected by osteoarthritis, it may experience pain, stiffness, swelling, and/or loss of motion. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, the exact cause of osteoarthritis is unknown, but it may occur more in older people and people who have previously had joint injuries and deformities, and people who are overweight.

Disk Problems

With age, the disks between the vertebrae lose some of their most helpful qualities. For example, they become dry and stiff with age, losing some of their cushioning qualities and potentially causing nerve pain. They also can become herniated (meaning that the disk's inner cartilage comes out through the disk's tougher covering) potentially causing neck pain or some nerve irritation. Moreover, tissues or bone spurs (growths on the bones) can put pressure on nerves and cause pain.

Injuries

Neck pain can stem from various injuries. Whiplash is one common neck injury. It occurs when the head is rapidly jerked back and forward (or vice versa,) causing the tissues in the neck to stretch beyond their natural limits. Automobile accidents are often what lead to whiplash injuries, according to the Mayo Clinic, but whiplash may also be related to sports activities. Fractures in the bones (bone breaks) are also commonly caused by automobile accidents and athletic activities. Bone breaks in the neck must be taken very seriously because they could also mean spinal cord injuries, leading to paralysis.

Treatment

The type of treatment used for neck problems and pain depends entirely on what is causing them to begin with. Some pain may disappear on its own, while other pain may require chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage therapy, or even surgery. Slight muscle pain is usually no cause for alarm, and some basic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen,) ice, topical creams, and rest can alleviate most of it.

Warning

Do be aware that neck pain should not be taken lightly if it is accompanied by more serious symptoms. For example, neck pain may be caused by a serious condition known as meningitis (swelling and irritation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord) or it may be a side symptom of a head injury. Contact a doctor if the affected person is experiencing confusion, sensory problems, pain behind an eye, fever, strong headache or backache, a rash, or muscle weakness in the arms and legs.

Make An Infinity Walk

Follow the figure eight around ...

Deborah Sunbeck, a clinical psychotherapist working in behavioral medicine, conceived the "infinity walk" in the 1980s, according to infinitywalk.org. The theory is simple: infinity walkers stride around in a figure eight while watching some sort of visual stimulus that distracts them. As a result, they use more of their brain than if they were just watching or walking, which Sunbeck believes stimulates neural networks, improving both the body and the mind. While books and classes for infinity walking are available, you can try it at home for next to nothing.

Instructions

Making an Infinity Walk

1. Set a sheet of butcher paper on the floor and draw a figure eight large enough for you to walk along. Teachersalley.com recommends putting two chairs at the center of the top and bottom of the figure, so that you have an added guide to the path you're about to walk.

2. Place a visual stimulus at a 90-degree angle to the figure eight, Sunbeck says. If the eight is aligned north-south, the stimulus should be east or west. In a clinical setting, therapists will sometimes use flashcards or an eye chart-like board with letters and numbers, but Sunbeck says an infinity walk at home can be done by using a television.

3. Turn on the television and walk the figure eight, swinging your arms in the opposite direction to your legs and keeping your eyes on the TV screen, turning your neck to watch as you move. Sunbeck says this stimulates your brain by forcing it to multi-task. Schedule infinity walks as if they were regular exercise walks--five minutes a day, 15 minutes three times a week or whatever arrangement works for you.

4. Challenge yourself by increasing the stimulus. According to the Northeast Center for Special Care, physical therapists may start patients looking at flashcards, then begin asking them questions about what they see on the flashcards, or throw a ball back and forth to the patient as they walk along the eight. Adding to the stimulus keeps the mind from becoming complacent with what it's doing.

Stomach Virus Prevention

Stomach viruses are highly contagious, but you might be able to prevent them with a little diligent hygiene. Viral gastroenteritis, the medical name for viral stomach infections, is caused by several types of viruses, including rotavirus, adenovirus, astrovirus and the caliciviruses. Stomach viruses are spread through body fluids such as saliva and feces.

Hands

To eliminate stomach viruses on your hands, you must wash thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 30 seconds. Dry hands with a paper towel.

Family

To prevent spreading a stomach virus among family members, all members of the household should diligently wash their hands after using the toilet and touching frequently handled items like door knobs or children's toys.

School

To prevent bringing stomach viruses home, children must also wash their hands at school and immediately upon returning home from school.

Saliva

Stomach viruses are spread through saliva, so don't share food or utensils with someone who has a stomach virus or has recently been exposed to one.

Bleach

Bleaching and drying will kill stomach viruses on surfaces. Wash contaminated clothing and bedding in hot water with bleach. Clean all soiled hard surfaces with a bleach solution and allow to dry thoroughly.

Food

Food contamination by stomach viruses can be prevented if food handlers wash their hands thoroughly before touching food. Food should not be handled by people who have active stomach viruses.

Shellfish

Shellfish can be contaminated with stomach viruses if their water contains raw sewage. To prevent infection, avoid eating raw shellfish.

Boswellia Information

Boswellia serrata, or Indian frankincense, is a spice extracted from the resin of the Indian boswellia tree. This resin is normally used as an incense, but it contains boswellic acid that contains medicinal properties.

History

According to the Ancient Essence website, frankincense was a historically important plant. It was mentioned in the Bible as a gift at the birth of Jesus. The website mentions that frankincense was rare and highly valued throughout the Middle East for its use as incense at religious ceremonies.

Benefits

Boswellic acid is believed to be useful for treating the swelling and joint pain associated with arthritis. It is thought to have anti-inflammatory and anti-asthmatic properties. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center indicates that boswellic acid causes cellular death in glioma (brain cancer) and leukemia (blood cancer) cells. It may also have benefits in treating cervical cancer.

Side Effects

According to the Chinese Herbs website, Boswellia serrata should not be used by pregnant women because it sometimes causes spontaneous abortion. Some less serious side effects include stomach upset, heartburn, skin rash and breathing problems.

Kegel Exercises After Pregnancy

Kegel Exercises After Pregnancy

Kegal exercises are exercises that contract the muscles to help strengthen the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor helps control the release of urine. Women who have been pregnant often suffer from urinary incontinence after giving birth.

History

Kegal exercises were first developed by Dr. Arnold Kegal in 1984. He developed them as a way for women to control incontinence after the birth of a baby.

Types

There are two main types of Kegal exercises. The first requires the woman to lift, tighten and draw in pelvic floor muscles slowly. The second Kegal exercise is similar to the first except the actions are done quickly rather than slowly.

Effects

In addition to Kegal exercises helping a women regain bladder control after pregnancy, they can tone the vaginal muscles and make sexual intercourse more pleasurable.

Benefits

Kegal exercises do not cost anything. They can be done anywhere at anytime during and after pregnancy.

Considerations

Kegal exercises may not be beneficial to all woman after pregnancy. It is best to seek a doctor's advice before starting any form of exercise.

Alli Starter Pack Information

In 2007 the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved orlistat (the active ingredient in Alli) for use as an over the counter weight loss agent for adults over the age of 18 years old. This distinguishes Alli from the other weight loss medications on your drugstore shelf and ensures the safety of the product. Before starting this medication, check with your doctor to avoid any interactions with other medications and to minimize your risk of side effects.

Getting Started

The Alli Starter Pack gives you everything you need to get started. Alli weight loss capsules are designed to work within your digestive tract and prevent your body from absorbing approximately 25 percent of the fat from your diet. The Alli Shuttle is a specially designed carrying case which makes it simple to keep your capsules with you wherever you go. Reference booklets like the welcome guide, companion guide, calorie and fat counter, healthy eating guide, Quick Facts cards and a Daily Journal are all designed to maximize your chances for success and make it easier to follow the program. Your starter pack also includes an online program with guidance and an action plan to help support you throughout the process.

How It Works

Alli, along with a healthy diet and exercise program, effectively assists you in losing weight by preventing your intestines from absorbing 25% of the fat from your diet, thereby reducing the total number of calories that your body absorbs. Orlistat disables the function of lipase (an enzyme in the digestive system which helps to break fat down) which enables undigested fat to pass through the intestinal tract. This fat is ultimately passed through your body and eliminated with your bowel movement.

Recommendations

Take Alli with a meal (a meal containing some fat), as frequently as three times daily. To limit unwanted side effects, limit your fat intake to no more than 15 grams per meal. Alli alone will not reduce your weight significantly. You must commit to adopting a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and exercise program. Once you reach your goal weight, discontinue using Alli. The makers of Alli (GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare) recommend that you take a daily multivitamin at bedtime.

Side Effects

Common side effects include frequent, sometimes urgent bowel movements; loose stools; diarrhea; difficulty in controlling bowel movements; and gas accompanied by an oily discharge from your anus. These bowel changes are a result of the undigested fat passing through your body and can be minimized by adopting a low-fat diet plan.

Warning

If you've undergone organ transplantation, do not take Alli (it can interact with anti-rejection medications). Do not use Alli if you have any conditions which inhibit the absorption or good, you are at a healthy weight or if you're on cyclosporine. Talk to your doctor before taking Alli if you have a history of thyroid disease, diabetes, gallbladder issues, pancreatitis, kidney stones or if you are taking any blood-thinning medications as you may require additional monitoring or a dosage adjustment. You should not take Alli if you are pregnant or nursing. Discontinue use and contact your doctor if you experience severe, worsening or nonstop pain in your abdomen. This could be a symptom of a serious condition.

Make An Essential Oil Distiller From Kitchen Equipment

Make an Essential Oil Distiller from Kitchen Equipment

Essential oil distillers extract concentrated oils from plant material. Unlike infused oils, essential oils are pure and contain oil only from the plant being distilled.

Essential oil distillers can be quite expensive. It is possible to use common kitchen equipment to produce a homemade distiller. The equipment used to make a the distiller should be made only of glass or stainless steel.

Instructions

1. Distiller Base

The base of the distiller should be a large stainless steel stock pot. When the distiller is in operation, this is where the plant material and water will be heated to produce steam. Maintain a temperature that slowly produces steam without over-heating the plant material.

2. Condenser

The condenser can be made of a lid placed upside down on the stock pot, a heat-safe glass dish, or pie plate that completely covers the top of the stock pot. When the distiller is in operation, steam rises and carries the plant oils to the condenser. The condenser cools the steam separating the oil from the water in the steam. Ice should be placed on top of the condenser to facilitate cooling.

3. Collector

A collector is a bowl placed inside the stock pot to catch the essential oil as it drips back down after cooled. The collector should be elevated above the level of water and plant material. It should be in the center of the stock pot. A steamer insert makes a good base for raising the collector above water level while operating the essential oil distiller.

Symptoms Of Copper Allergy Due To Dental Braces

Allergies to copper or other metals in braces are not uncommon. Fortunately, reactions can be treated. If you suspect a copper allergy, talk to your doctor about alternative metals. Don't let it stand in the way of getting the smile you want.

Time Frame

Nearly all patients will go through an adjustment period when their braces are put on, and some discomfort or soreness is normal. However, if you experience tingling or pain after two or three days, this could indicate a reaction to the copper in your braces.

Features

Typical indicators that something is amiss include inflammation of the mouth, especially the gums or where the insides of the cheeks or the lips rub against the metal. A slight rash of raised or red bumps may appear inside the mouth on the affected areas.

Warning

To make braces appealing, companies now market glow-in-the-dark braces. Copper is a common material in these creations, but if you want this look and are sensitive to copper, ask for a different substance.

Solution

Mild allergies are not life-threatening and the patient's discomfort can be alleviated by taking Benadryl, or aspirin for the soreness. If your doctor suspects a reaction to the metal components, he can replace your orthodontics.

Prevention

Ask your orthodontist if she uses copper or other potentially harmful metals (such as nickel or chromium) in the brackets or wires. If she uses any of these metals, you can ask for braces without them and most orthodontists are happy to accommodate.

Use Laser Therapy For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Use Laser Therapy for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Laser therapy is an emerging treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. The procedure involves the use of certain lights to stimulate tissues, blood flow and the release of natural chemicals to treat the ailment. You need to be careful when you use laser therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome because it can be expensive and difficult to find someone qualified to give you the treatment. Read on to learn more about use laser therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Instructions

1. Ask your doctor if she knows any hospitals or practices in the area that use laser therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome. You may need to find someone to give you this procedure yourself. It is commonly referred to as cold laser treatment or laser light therapy.

2. Convince your health insurance to pay for some of your laser therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome. You may want a letter of support from your doctor saying that other non-invasive treatments have been unsuccessful. The cost of laser therapy can sometimes be comparable to surgery.

3. Wear eye protection when you go in for a laser therapy session. Even though the laser is focused on your wrist and relatively harmless, government regulations require patients to protect their eyes during treatment. Your doctor should provide you with this protection and explain use it.

4. Lie back and relax while the doctor uses laser therapy for your carpal tunnel syndrome. The light can penetrate through two inches of your body, so reaching the median nerve should not be a problem. Try to hold your hand as still as possible to make the session shorter.

5. Get several sessions of laser therapy to ensure that your carpal tunnel is put under control. Some patients may feel results after only one or two sessions, but it may take a few weeks of treatment for some. Laser therapy should be effective at treating carpal tunnel syndrome a second time if your symptoms return.

Maintain Normalcy After A Hysterectomy

Maintain Normalcy After a Hysterectomy

This article will teach you maintain a sense of normalcy after a hysterectomy.

Instructions

1. The first step to feeling normal again is to begin to do normal things as soon as your recovery allows. This means, getting the mail, washing the dishes, doing the laundry, exercising. As soon as your doctor gives you the OK to do these things, do not restrict yourself. I started working out as soon as the DR allowed it. And I never felt more liberated.

2. Do not feel sorry for yourself. Do not even entertain the thought. When that feeling hits you, get your shoes and go. Go for a walk, if you can, take a long drive or heck go shopping. These emotions can be overwhelming, but as long as you stay on top of them, you will maintain control. What worked for me the most during those times, was to be outside. So whenever I felt bad I went for a walk, or had someone drive me around. When I could drive on my own, I went shopping.

3. Take care of your body. This step is so important. Once I had the hysterectomy and the disease was taken out of my body, I felt liberated. I wanted to sing and dance and scream and cry and just live like I never lived before. Yes, it was tragic, yes it was painful, physically and emotionally. But that part is over and it is time to move on. Everyday I take my vitamins, I exercise and I watch what I eat. I do not restrict myself to anything. If I want chocolate, I have chocolate just in moderation. I also stop and reflect on the beautiful things in my life. And not for one second do I allow myself to be a victim. I am not a victim, I am a survivor. We have a choice, and I choose to live happily. Yes my joints hurt, yes they ache. Yes I am an emotionally wreck. Yes there are times when I cry like a newborn baby, but I don't indulge in those emotions. Allow yourself a time to feel it, and then move on. Allow yourself time to cry for a few minutes and then move on. My life is not just back to normal, it is better! Think of this as a second chance and take charge of your life!

Lower Progesterone Levels Naturally

Progesterone at healthy levels is an important steroid hormone found in the human body. It is produced in women's ovaries during active menstruation cycles, but also can be found in the adrenal glands and made in the placenta. Progesterone is useful in helping regulate the levels of estrogen in the body, lowering the chance of endometriosis. Less well known roles of progesterone include regulating the immune response, slowing the digestive process, reducing anxiety, and building and maintaining bone. Many people have low levels of progesterone, especially women who have reached menopause, and so progesterone supplements are readily available. However, when the progesterone levels are too high, there is a whole different story. This article will explore lower progesterone levels naturally.

Instructions

1. Your body will naturally lower progesterone levels on its own as you reach menopause. Although some women maintain levels of progesterone by the adrenal glands taking over production at menopause, most women's progesterone levels drop close to zero at menopause. If you are about to experience menopause, your body can lower your levels of progesterone on its own.

2. If you miss an ovulation cycle, meaning you don't ovulate one month, your levels of progesterone will be lower. This is because right after ovulation, the level of progesterone is increased by the body. (This means that some forms of birth control may lower the progesterone level without you doing something additionally.) The body lowers the level of progesterone itself during the preovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle.

3. There are certain parts of the body involved in the production and synthesis of progesterone. Progesterone is produced in the ovaries from pregnenolone. So, if your ovaries are removed due to cancer, for example, your levels of progesterone will naturally decrease.

4. Make sure you actually have levels of progesterone that are too high. Don't just assume. Visit your doctor and get tests to check for progesterone levels. Serum tests are generally recommended over saliva tests for assessing accurate progesterone levels.

5. Find out what is making your progesterone level too high. High progesterone levels may be a result of endogenous factors, such as adrenal hyperplasia. Getting this condition under control will lower progesterone levels. An exogenous factor would be high levels of progesterone due to progesterone replacement therapy. The doses could be lowered or stopped to naturally reduce the level of progesterone.

6. If your high level of progesterone is not due to an exogenous or endogenous cause, this means that your base level of progesterone is too high. Discuss with your doctor handle this. Your doctor may suggests prescription remedies that are not natural, so make sure to let your doctor know you would like natural remedies. (A holistic doctor might be your best bet.)

7. Consider the possibility that emotional factors are contributing to your low levels of progesterone. Bioenergy balancing theorizes that unresolved emotions held in the body can alter the body's ability to balance hormone levels appropriately. In this case, psychotherapy or some other type of counseling may help to naturally lower the level of progesterone in the body.

Construction Safety Information

The construction industry has many hazards and dangers. Most accidents that happen on a construction job site are caused by lack of training, lazines, or carelessness. All of which can be prevented by following required safety regulations.

A construction company is required to comply with many government regulations in addition to its own safety policies. Training employees in safe work practices is critical to the success of any company's safety program.

Hazard Recognition and Control

The foundation of a company's safety program is the ability to recognize, evaluate, and control hazards and risks on the job site. Hazard recognition should be the job of every employee. If an employee sees a hazard that can be immediately mitigated, he should do so. If it is something that cannot be immediately fixed, he should know to report it to his supervisor or safety technician.

Several tools enable employees to recognize hazards of jobs: Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Task Safety Analysis (TSA), Safety Inspections and Pre-job Planning Checklists. Employees should be trained in the use of these tools when applicable to their job and be required to use them.

Job Safety Analysis and Task Safety Analysis

A JSA, also known as a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) is an excellent tool for hazard recognition. The form is broken down into several elements and each step of the job. If a hazard is identified, it allows for controls to mitigate those hazards.

A TSA, also known as a Task Hazard Analysis (THA), is similar to JSAs as it breaks the job down into steps, enabling the employees to identify hazards during each step and to establish controls to mitigate hazards. The difference between the forms is that a TSA is usually preprinted with the steps of the task. If there are new hazards not identified on the form, they should be addressed to the supervisor and to the entire crew of the task.

JSAs and TSAs should be used for every job and each individual employee on the crew should participate in its completion or read the completed form. Many companies require that all crew members sign the completed form.

Hazard Communication and MSDS

Hazardous materials used incorrectly can cause devastating results. Many materials react violently with other elements. Corrosion, fire, and explosion are some of the reactions that can occur if hazardous materials are used incorrectly.

Hazard communication (HAZCOM) is an OSHA standard directing companies to communicate the hazards of chemicals and other materials used within their company. If an employee has the opportunity to be exposed to a material it is required that the company communicates its hazards to them.

Every material or compound used on a construction job site shall have a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) available for employees to read or review. MSDSs also contain manufacturer's contact information, possible reactions, emergency data, and first aid procedures. It is the employee's responsibility to become familiar with the MSDSs and to know where they are on each specific job site.

Accidents

Safety starts with each individual. Every employee's goal should be zero accidents on the job site. Accidents may result in injuries, which can be expensive and result in lost time by the employer and the employee. Engaging in an unsafe practice or accepting unsafe situations or conditions are the two primary reasons for accidents, according to the National Center for Construction Education and Research

OSHA

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is a federal agency under the Department of Labor that provides information guidance, and enforcement of safety policies. OSHA policies are called standards. There are General Standards (29 CFR 1910) and Standards that apply only to the construction industry (29 CFR 1926).

Safety Meetings

Safety meetings play a large role in communicating hazards and training individuals. Depending on your company and the hazards faced everyday, safety meetings can be held daily, weekly or monthly.

Discussions may include the immediate hazards to that job site, MSDSs, lessons learned, upcoming jobs or tasks, and any other pertinent information.

Toolbox or tailgate meetings can also be held by the foreman or immediate supervisor to a specific task or job.

Employee Communication

It is critical that employees are recognized for their accomplishments and disciplined fairly when necessary. The safety department must communicate with employees to ensure they know what is expected of them. Job site leadership should be approachable so the employee can easily communicate concerns or potential hazards related to the job.

Open communication allows people to speak honestly without fear of repercussions between all employees all the time. This type of communication makes even the shortest conversation understood and meaningful, increasing the safety of the job site considerably.

High Risk Hpv & Pregnancy

HPV, or the human papillomavirus, is a widespread disease that infects the skin and mucous membranes. This disease is spread by skin-to-skin contact, with around 30 types spread only during direct genital contact, according to Thehpvtest.com.

Types

These genital types of HPV include a high-risk type and a low-risk type. The high-risk type can cause different types of cancer, but most frequently, cervical cancer.

HPV and Pregnancy

According to Babycenter.com, HPV is not likely to have an effect on your pregnancy or your baby's health.

HPV Transmission

Although rare, HPV can be transmitted to you baby during childbirth. If contracted, your baby will probably rid himself of the disease without any issues.

Rare Complication

An extremely rare complication is when your baby contracts HPV from you and then develops "warts on his vocal cords and other areas sometime in infancy or childhood," according to Babycenter.com. This situation is called "recurrent respiratory papillomatosis" and is a serious condition.

Expert Insight

According to Cancerhelp.org.uk, there is no proof that pregnancy increases the risk of cervical cancer. However, irregularities in the cervix may become more noticeable during pregnancy. This also makes it easier to be diagnosed.

Cold Weather Survival Tips For Alaska & Canada

Surviving the extreme cold requires staying warm and dry.

Canada and Alaska offer some of the world's most stunning landscapes and natural beauty. However, situated far to the north, their climates can also be challenging. In the winter, temperatures routinely stay below freezing, and intense snowstorms represent a serious danger to one's physical well-being. A prepared individual can protect himself against the cold weather.

Source of Heat

Heat your living area. If you have gas or electric heating, keep the thermostat at a steady, warm temperature. Purchase a space heater for extra heat but keep it away from curtains or other items that may catch fire. The risk for carbon monoxide poisoning is greater in the winter when people are using heating systems more often. Install carbon monoxide detectors and have your home heating system checked by a professional. If you rely on a fireplace, keep the fire going and stay in its proximity to benefit from its warmth. Do the same if caught outdoors. Gather firewood before the sun goes down. For firewood, look for fallen limbs and branches that are not too green. Ash, oak and pine, all of which are native to Canada and Alaska, are good for burning.

Health Hazards

Learn to recognize and treat frostbite and hypothermia. Both cold-induced maladies can be fatal in extreme cases. Frostbite is evidenced by skin that turns gray or white or even looks frozen. Hypothermia is indicated by notable drops in body temperature, uncontrolled shivering, and disorientation or delusion. If you are suffering these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention. In the meantime, or if medical attention is unavailable, find a source of heat and, if outside, go inside immediately. Do not pour hot water on frostbitten body parts.

Clothing

Wearing proper clothing is key to surviving the cold. Try to cover as much exposed skin as possible, head to toe. Layer clothes as much as possible. Wool is a good insulator, while synthetic fabrics can be waterproof. Try to have a change of dry clothes ready at a given moment. Don't neglect to wear scarves, hats, gloves, and other accessories. Wear synthetic fibers engineered for the cold, such as GoreTex. Wool and fur are good natural fabrics for protecting against cold. Silk long underwear can be worn under both shirts and pants.

Diet

Diet also affects winter weather tolerance. Eat properly and avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, which may dehydrate you and (in the case of alcohol) lower circulation, which depresses body temperature. Your body may burn more calories in cold weather, so don't be reluctant to eat more than usual. Stay properly hydrated to maintain your body's homeostatic, self-heating system. Warm, sweet drinks and soups or broths are ideal. Stockpile necessary food items if you have dietary restrictions in the event you can't leave your house.

Communication

Keep tuned in to severe weather alerts. In Alaska, the National Weather Service broadcasts alerts that are transmitted over the radio or TV in emergency situations. In Canada, the Weather Office does the same. Keep a battery-powered radio on hand in case of power outages.

Cure An Aching Back

A lot of people suffer from chronic back pain. Many times it seems that there is no end in sight, even after countless trips to the doctor. Do not feel hopeless. There are ways to treat your aching back.

Instructions

1. Avoid undue stress on your back. Understand bend and lift properly in addition to stretching before doing any physical activity that involves use of back muscles.

2. Control your weight. Being overweight is an instant factor in developing back pain because of the additional stress it places on your body.

3. Stand properly. When standing upright for a prolonged period of time, hold your stomach in when you stand. It tilts the pelvis toward the back and provides crucial support for the lower spine.

4. Take frequent breaks to walk and stretch, if you must sit for a long period of time.

5. Sleep on a firm mattress.

6. Lie down for an extended period of time to reduce stress.

7. Try an antiinflammatory like Motrin or a pain reliever such as Tylenol to reduce pain. Muscle relaxers prescribed by a physician may also be helpful.

8. Place an ice bag on your back and lay on it for several hours. Stand up to walk and move around afterward.

9. Get a massage to loosen tense back muscles. A trained professional can help relieve some discomfort caused by knotted muscles.

10. Ask your physician for specific back exercises you can do to relieve back pain.

Thuja For The Treatment Of Warts

Warts, everyone agrees, are extremely difficult to treat. There are different types of warts, the most common being plantar, filiform, plane, mosaic, genital and common warts. Warts are caused by a virus. They differ in appearance and location on the body, but they are all distressing to the person affected, and are all stubbornly difficult to remove. Alternative treatments are now becoming more common as a way of dealing with these uncomfortable lesions.

Causes and Conventional Treatment

Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus, a virus that can cause the warts to spread to other parts of the body or to other people. This simply adds to the distress of the affected person, and any skin doctor will attest to the fact that wart removal is a major part of a dermatologist's practice.

Common wart-removal techniques include topical treatments containing salicylic acid, cyrotherapy (freezing the warts so that they "die") and even laser surgery. Even with these treatments, however, warts often return, because even if the outward manifestation of the virus is eliminated the virus itself may remain.

Homeopathic Treatment: Thuja

A popular alternative medicine that has been gaining support in recent years is homeopathy. Homeopathic treatments are remedies selected according to the patient's symptoms, both physical and psychological---even those that may not seem to be pertinent. (A homeopathic practitioner will want to know about the patient's disposition, other health issues, any stressors in the patient's life and so on.) Homeopaths believe that illnesses are best treated by substances that can induce the presenting symptoms---these homeopathic remedies have been diluted and, as treatment progresses, continue to be administered in increasingly diluted form.

Thuja, a ceder tree that grows in North America and Asia, is believed by homeopaths to contain properties that will successfully treat all forms of warts. Homeopaths generally use a topical compound containing Thuja occidentalis to treat warts, and report much success with this remedy--- especially notable with genital warts, which for conventional practitioners have proven to be the most difficult form of wart to treat.

Homeopathic remedies are similar to conventional medicine in that one should take great care before using any medications or treatments. A doctor (or, in the case of homeopathic medicines, a licensed homeopathic practitioner) should always be consulted so that the treatment is conducted properly and to maximum effect. Many homeopaths, for example, recommend mixing thuja with olive oil before applying it to genital warts; this is information that few people would know if they were treating themselves.

Importance of Openness to Alternative Treatments, Such as Homeopathic Thuja

It is clear that conventional medicine seems clueless in treating warts. Alternative medicines, including homeopathic thuja, may offer relief to many people who are searching for a cure for this distressing and frustrating condition.

How Do Ultrasonic Nebulizers Work

Using a Nebulizer

Ultrasonic nebulizers are an inhalation method used to deliver medication into the lungs of a patient. The machines are meant for use by those who cannot use a hand-held inhaler. The word nebulize indicates the reduction of a liquid into a fine mist. Ultrasonics is a method that can be used to break up a liquid and turn it into smaller particles through the use of intense sound waves.

Why an Ultrasonic Nebulizer?

By introducing the medication to a high-frequency ultrasonic process, the liquid becomes a mist or fog. Because an ultrasonic nebulizer produces a more uniform mist filled with smaller particles of medicine, it is believed to be a superior method of delivering medication--the smaller the particle, the easier and deeper the medicine can penetrate the lungs. In addition, the ultrasonic models are more compact in size, weigh less than compressor nebulizers, do not necessarily require dilution of the medication and make far less noise than compressor type nebulizers.

Ultrasonic Nebulizer Components

Some ultrasonic nebulizers require water to be added as a carrier for the medication during the creation of the mist and some do not. Basic components include the transducer (where ultrasonic nebulization takes place), medication cup, mesh cap, mouthpiece and mask. Professional ultrasonic nebulizers used by hospitals and physicians will be equipped with an adjustable arm that allows movement and further reach of the breathing tube and mouthpiece.

What Medications Work

Ultrasonic nebulizers require solution-based medications. The nebulizers require a very small particle liquid in order to work properly. Suspension medications such as Budesonide are made up of larger particles of medication which the ultrasonic nebulizer cannot break down. If a medication is not the correct type but is used in the nebulizer, the ultrasonic process will not occur, and the medicine will be wasted.

Nebulizer Maintenance

Compact, portable ultrasonic nebulizers use ordinary tap or distilled water when required. Using cool water should result in a lower rate of nebulization. Warm water will raise the rate. These units should be cleaned before first use and after every use. Allow the unit to cool completely before cleaning. All remaining medication should be removed and the medicine cup cleaned. Clean the mouth piece, empty the water tank and dry with a soft cloth. Allow parts to air dry and follow all the manufacturer's recommendations.

What Cold Medicines Can Be Taken While Nursing

Nursing is growing in popularity. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends it, electric pumps make it easier to continue when mom goes back to work and women are growing more comfortable breastfeeding publicly. But as more women nurse for longer periods of time, there is growing concern about what women ingest while nursing. Some things, like chocolate, are perfectly safe. Other things, such as the medication Methotrexate, should never be taken. The American Academy of Pediatrics rates medication safety levels and the safest cold medications follow.

Considerations

Medicines that a mother takes while nursing do pass into her milk. However, the dosage is usually so small (often less than 1 percent) that most medicines are considered safe for breastfeeding mothers. When taking medications while nursing, try to minimize the number of ingredients. If your headache is the worst part of your cold, simply take a painkiller instead of a pill that also has a decongestant and cough suppressant.

Painkillers

Acetaminophen, found in Tylenol, and ibuprofen, found in Advil, are the safest painkillers.

Cough Medicine
