The ligament that runs from the heel bone to the toes is called the plantar fascia. When it becomes inflamed or torn, a condition called plantar fasciitis can develop. The force from various high-impact activities, such as running, can put stress on the fascia, leading to inflammation. Individuals who are overweight or have flat feet are also at risk for developing the condition. The main symptom is heel pain. Plantar fasciitis may develop in one foot or both, and the severity of symptoms may vary. There are several ways to reduce pain and treat the condition.
Instructions
1. Limit activities temporarily. If possible, stay off your feet as much as you can for a few days. By staying off your feet and limiting activities, it may give your tendon a chance to heal. The longer you have the pain from the condition, the harder it may be to treat.
2. Wear a night splint on your foot. A splint will keep the tendon stretched while you sleep. The stretching may help keep the tendon loose and reduce the likelihood of it tearing. Talk to your doctor about also wearing arch supports in your shoes during the day. The supports may help keep the weight on the foot evenly distributed, which puts less pressure on the tendon.
3. Stretch the foot and the calf muscle each morning and before exercise. The fascia may become tight overnight, making the condition worse. Speak to your doctor about specific stretching exercises to do.
4. Apply ice. Ice helps reduce inflammation and may help pain. Put an ice pack on the heel of your foot for 20 minutes, three times a day. Also apply ice to the foot after exercises, such as running.
5. Switch to low-impact forms of exercises. Repeated force on the foot and tendon can lead to plantar fasciitis. For example, high-impact activities, such as running and jumping rope, can cause stress on the fascia. Do lower impact activities, such as walking, swimming and biking.
6. Have acupressure done. Acupressure involves applying pressure to certain spots on the heel, which may help increase blood flow and promote healing.

Grieving over a loved one's death can be a very personal process. There is no single, right way to deal with such a hardship that can be suddenly thrust upon a person. Reference books on the grieving process may help people deal with grief and perhaps answer some of their questions.
Grief
Grief can bring about many different feelings both immediately after the death of a loved one and over time. Some of these emotions include denial as to what has happened, shock that the death has occurred, anger over the loss, and sadness. These diverse feelings may be felt separately or together during the grieving process.
Depression
People may feel depressed when dealing with the loss of a loved one. Some people also find themselves feeling guilt because they wonder how this loss will affect them and their individual lives instead of thinking about the loved one who passed away.
Clean and Sober
Some people may find the need to forget about their grief by turning to alcohol. This avenue of relief should not be explored, and heavy drinking should be avoided. Not only can this behavior bring about new problems, it can also lead the person into a deeper depression than grief alone.
No Big Decisions
A person who is grieving should generally not make any big decisions, at least not right away. For example, the sale of a house or a change of career is something that should be put off for a while. It can be a more healthy plan to take things slowly, on a day-by-day basis.
Talking About It
Talking to relatives or other people about feelings a person is experiencing may be helpful. Many support groups exist for all types of loss from the deaths of pets, or relationships, or personal losses. If a person prefers a more one-on-one approach, there are many professionals they can talk with individually.
Acceptance
A grieving person needs to begin to let friends and other relationships back into their lives as soon as they can. Even though they are still feeling the loss, it can be helpful for them to venture out socially with friends. A night out with the girls or boys can be very healthy.
Time of Grief
There is no time limit or schedule for grieving. Depending on the individual person, the grieving process can take anywhere from several months to several years. However, it is commonly believed that the average person can begin to feel better about two months after they experience their loss.

Cleansing does not require pills, pre-made solutions, exotic ingredients or anything that comes in a box. Cleanses are flexible and can be adjusted to your needs and lifestyle, can involve the use of many homemade juices and cheap herbal teas, and are categorized most importantly by a brief period of abstaining from heavily processed solid foods. The following 10-day cleansing procedure is a template that may be used step by step or adjusted to provide excellent results.
Preparation
Begin by removing foods that are hard to digest, have a high calorie content or are overcooked for preparation. Animal meat, processed grains such as white rice, flour, and pasta, sugary foods, dairy and caffeine should be cut back significantly or eliminated three days before the cleanse begins.
A sample meal plan to prepare for a cleanse would look like this:
Breakfast -- a fruit of your choice
Snack -- almonds and dried fruit
Afternoon -- steamed broccoli with brown rice
Snack -- carrots and hummus
Dinner -- lentil soup
Your prep diet is identical to the type of diet recommended once the cleanse is over. A cleanse is meant to wean you off of addictive foods such as heavily processed grains, sugary foods, dairy, caffeine and animal meat. For your three-day preparation, stick to vegetables, fruits, whole grains and nuts and seeds. Drink plenty of water, herbal tea and juice to substitute for soda, coffee and other liquids with high sugar and caffeine content.
Days 1 to 3
Consume liquids only. Appropriate liquids include fruit juices (preferably not pre-bottled, but if you don't have a juicer, look for unpasteurized juice, and/or juice with the least ingredients--ideally just the fruit used to make the juice), soups (without solids such as potatoes or carrots), vegetable broths, herbal teas and water. Liquids require less effort from your digestive enzymes and digestive organs, taking a load off of the body as a whole, allowing it to focus on cleansing. As you move from solids to liquids, you may notice your bowel movements becoming more strained or infrequent. For this reason, it is recommended that you also flush out your system with a sea-salt solution--2 teaspoons of sea salt to one quart of water. Drink this solution first thing every morning to move the toxic buildup in your colon out through two to three bowel movements per day.
Days 4 to 7
Simplify your liquid diet. A liquid cleansing recipe was created by Stanley Burroughs in 1940 and is still widely used and known today as the "Lemonade Diet." This recipe (2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon, 2 tablespoons maple syrup and 1/10th teaspoon cayenne pepper in a 10-ounce glass of water) is said to provide enough calories to function as you would normally while using ingredients, such as lemon and cayenne pepper, that have healing effects in the body. While citrus is acidic outside of the body, it becomes alkaline once consumed, creating an opportunity for your body to build its immune defenses and detox from waste buildup accumulated through a bad diet, taking antibiotics or past illness. All of this buildup is believed to make it harder for your body to shed excess weight. While weight is often attributed exclusively to body fat, disease weight must also be accounted for in the buildup of mucus, which is broken up and released when consuming cayenne pepper.
There is no one perfect liquid detox mixture for days four through seven. Most importantly, you must eliminate the soups and broths of days one through three and drink only one kind of simple juice. An ideal cleansing juice is freshly squeezed and has minimal ingredients. Supplement with water and herbal tea as much as needed. Continue to do the salt-water flush every morning.
Days 8 to 10
Drink water only. Days one through seven are meant to prepare you to effectively handle a two-day water fast, which is an advanced form of cleansing. If you begin to feel very weak, do not hesitate to add in the juice from days four through seven. If you juice cleanse for days four through 10, you will still see results.
Clean water (bottled, spring, deionized or reverse osmosis) is the ultimate cleansing liquid. It is the cheapest of all recommended products for cleansing and works the best. Your body is made up almost entirely of water, water contains no complicated ingredients, calories or addictive chemicals, and will in turn cleanse you of those cravings caused by highly processed foods containing sugar, dairy, animal meat and caffeine.
You can find deionized or reverse osmosis water at most health food stores, where refillable containers are sold, and the water is released through a machine in the store. If you cannot find these kinds of water, try bottled or spring. Tap water is not appropriate for a cleanse. Deionized and reverse osmosis water are cheapest (about 50 cents per gallon, and about $8.00 for a two-gallon container).
Breaking the Fast
Do not go back to eating as you did before the cleanse. Incorporating heavily processed, high-calorie foods immediately back into your diet has been known to cause irritable bowel. Your digestive enzymes will be weakened after cleansing, so it is necessary to drink a juice with high pulp (such as orange juice or apple juice) for one or two days before incorporating any solids back into your diet. On day three you may add raw fruits and vegetables to your liquid diet. By day six it will be safe for you to eat whole grains and legumes, such as black beans and brown rice, and cook your vegetables. Carry on with a healthy vegetarian diet for as long as possible. Use this 10-day cleansing guide for maintenance as often as once a month, but do not fluctuate wildly from a bad diet to a strict cleanse. The ultimate goal of a cleanse is to create a healthy lifestyle on a day-to-day basis.

Foot ulcers are sores or breaks in the skin that typically occur on the ball of the foot. They are most common in people with poorly managed diabetes, but they may affect anyone of any age and health status. With treatment, most foot ulcers will heal completely. Untreated foot ulcers may become infected or lead to extensive tissue damage. According to the American Diabetes Association, severe cases may require amputation.
Instructions
Heal Foot Ulcers
1. Apply topical antibiotic ointment to the foot ulcer to prevent infection and speed healing. Schedule an urgent appointment with your doctor, especially if you are diabetic. Even small foot ulcers can quickly become infected or lead to other complications.
2. Get an x-ray or MRI scan of your foot to make certain the bone is not involved. The type and extent of treatment depends on how much tissue is involved. If damage is severe, or if infection is present in the bones, hospitalization or amputation may be required.
3. Take oral antibiotics if your foot ulcer does not respond to topical antibiotics, or if your doctor believes the ulcer is becoming worse, or there is indication that an infection has spread into surrounding tissue. Systemic antibiotics can significantly reduce the risk of sepsis, cellulitis, and amputation, according to the NYU Langone Medical Center.
4. Flush the ulcer with a saline solution to keep it clean. Avoid hydrogen peroxide or antiseptic rinses on your foot ulcer unless you doctor specifically prescribes it. Using these products to clean your wound may delay healing and dry out the tissue. Foot ulcers heal more quickly when they are kept moist.
5. Stay off your foot as much as possible until the foot ulcer is completely healed. When no infection is present, your doctor may cast the foot temporarily to prevent you from putting pressure on the wounded area. According to Columbia University Medical Center, special shoes may also be prescribed to use both during recovery and in the future to prevent a recurrence of the ulcer.
6. Try treating your foot ulcer with bioengineered skin patches or recombinant growth factor if other treatment methods have failed. These options improve recovery time and help prevent infection. Dermagraft, one of three FDA approved therapies, is a dissolvable material that contains connective tissue cells. The mesh material is placed directly on the foot ulcer, where it is absorbed by the body. The patch replaces damaged areas of skin and encourages the growth of new skin.
7. Speak with your doctor about surgical removal of damaged or dead tissue in the area of your foot ulcer. This procedure, called debridement, reduces the chance of infection, speeds healing, and lessens the likelihood of amputation. Debridement is typically the most effective way to treat foot ulcers, especially those caused or complicated by diabetes.

Gray Syndrome is found in newborns and is actually the baby's toxic reaction to the drug Chloramphenicol. This drug is used to fight bacterial infections, but newborns do not have the enzymes in their bodies to break down the Chloramphenicol. Therefore, infants have a toxic, and often fatal, reaction to the drug.
Instructions
1. Be mindful of what medications the infant is given. If the infant must have a type of bacteria-fighting medication, request that it not be Chloramphenicol. This way, the infant will not be at risk for Gray Syndrome at all.
2. Keep a close eye on the infant for several days following the administration of Chloramphenicol. If the doctors must give the baby Chloramphenicol, you must keep a close watch on the infant for at least a week after receiving the drug. Generally, the baby will start to show signs of Gray Syndrome 2 to 9 days after receiving treatment.
3. Know the symptoms of Gray Syndrome. First of all, an infant must be given Chloramphenicol in order to develop Gray Syndrome. Symptoms of Gray Syndrome include: low body temperature, blue color of the lips, nail beds, and skin, cardiovascular collapse, vomiting, low blood pressure, loose, green stools, lack of appetite and a limp body.
4. Take the infant to the doctor if he is showing any of these symptoms as soon as possible. Gray Syndrome is fatal to infants if untreated. The main treatment for Gray Syndrome is a blood transfusion to give the infant clean blood and dilute the amount of Chloramphenicol that is already in the bloodstream.
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is the development of harmful bacteria in the urethra, bladder or kidneys. Symptoms of this painful condition include burning upon urination and a frequent urge to go to the bathroom. Urinary infections are not usually serious but can become more dangerous if bacteria spreads to the kidneys and is left untreated. Home care measures as well as prescription medications can help heal a UTI.
Instructions
1. Drink plenty of water and other clear liquids to help rid yourself of the bacteria that causes urinary tract infections. The Mayo Clinic reinforces the common thought that cranberry juice may help kill bacteria. Try to drink at least eight full glasses of water each day.
2. Avoid substances that may irritate your bladder and cause you more pain. Alcoholic beverages, caffeinated teas, coffees and soft drinks may all make your UTI symptoms worse. Lemonade, orange juice and other citrus products may also contribute to your irritation and could prolong the healing process.
3. Visit your doctor to discuss your symptoms. She may take a urine culture and will most likely prescribe an antibiotic that will heal your urinary tract infection. Amoxicillin and sulfa drugs are most often used to fight UTI in adults. Augmentin is a common choice for children's UTI symptoms.
4. Add a pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to counter the pain you feel during urination. This type of drug will not heal the infection but can alleviate some of the symptoms while you are taking antibiotics.

Medical care--and medical insurance--are generally very expensive no matter where you live. However, if you live in California, there are several different sources for obtaining free medical benefits. These sources range from state-sponsored programs to county-sponsored programs and even local programs that are sponsored by companies or groups. Remember, if you strike out with one free health care provider, there are more to try. Never give up--your health is one of your most important assets.
Instructions
1. Contact the Medi-Cal offices. See the Resources link below for contact information. Medi-Cal is a state-run program for providing no-cost or low-cost medical services to those who qualify. There are more than 80 programs that you can qualify for under Medi-Cal, and once you are approved for any one of those 80 programs, you can take advantage of all of the services in the Medi-Cal program. Ask the office to send you a list of all the programs that you might be eligible for, or search through the list of programs online.
2. Contact your local office of the Department of Health Care Services. If you are having trouble figuring out which programs you might qualify for under Medi-Cal, or if you feel you can't qualify under any Medi-Cal program, then the department is the place that can direct you to free medical benefits you qualify for. See the Resources link below to contact your local office of the Department of Health Care Services.
3. Be prepared to provide your income and expenses for the past 3 years. If you have little or no income, be prepared to explain how you survive on a day-to-day basis. Your income and expenses will determine your eligibility for most Medi-Cal or other programs that provide free or extremely low-cost medical services.
4. Fill out the applications for free medical services that you receive from the Medi-Cal office or from the Department of Health Services. If you need help in filling out any forms, ask for it. Such help is generally provided for free. Be honest with your answers. Submit the form as directed.
5. Phone your local hospital. Ask to speak with a financial counselor or someone in financial services. Explain your situation. Many counties in California have special programs to provide medical services for free or at extremely low cost for county residents. Orange County, for example, has the MSI (Medical Services Initiative) program, which provides free medical and dental care to those in the county who qualify based on income. Many other counties have similar programs, and your local hospital can direct you to the programs that best fill your needs.

The Australian tea tree blooms in late spring or early summer.
The Australian tea tree, Leptospermum, belongs to the subfamily leptospermoideae of the myrtaceae family. There are approximately 86 recognized species, of which about 83 are found in Australia. Most common in acidic, low-nutrient, wet substrates, the tea tree adapts to a variety of habitats. Australian tea tree grows well either from cuttings or from seed.
Leptospermum Scoparium
The scoparium tea tree variety is found in New Zealand in addition to Australia and is the most common variety of the Leptospermum species. Classified as a shrub tree, it only reaches approximately 10 feet in height. The scoparium thrives in full sun or partial shade, blooms in late spring and early summer and is rarely affected by disease and pests. The scoparium is not native to North America, being hardy to zones 12a to 15b. Flowers possess five petals and appear singly or in clusters.
Leptospermum Epacridoideum
The epacridoideum variety of tea tree is somewhat smaller than the scoparium in that it only reaches approximately 6 1/2 feet in height. The epacridoideum measures approximately 6 1/2 feet across, giving it an almost square appearance. Little white flowers about 1/2 inch in diameter that bloom in early summer create a colorful contrast against the small, dark leaves of the plant. The epacridoideum adapts to heavy shade and tolerates cold weather down to approximately 20 degrees Celsius.
Leptospermum Juniperinum
The juniperinum variety of the tea tree plant is suitable as a screen or hedge plant, according to the Australian National Botanic Gardens. The tree is shorter than 10 feet in height and the leaves are narrow and pointed in shape and vary in length up to a little over 1/2 inch. Flowers are white in color, measure less than 1/2 inch in diameter and bloom in the spring or early summer. The juniperinum also tolerates colder weather, like the epacridoideum, and adapts to areas with poor drainage.

Breaking or fracturing a hip is a common injury in the geriatric population, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Due to loss of bone density and diseases such as osteoarthritis, older people are most at risk for hip fractures. Surgery is usually required to heal a broken hip, but some lucky individuals may not need an operation. Medication, in some cases, may be able to heal a broken hip without resorting to surgery.
Instructions
1. Allow your doctor to assess your broken hip and to run other tests, if needed, to determine whether you can heal your broken bone without surgery. Your doctor will take X-rays to view the location and severity of the fracture. A bone density test may be performed to evaluate the state of your bone health as well.
2. Receive an infusion of a drug called zoledronic acid to heal your hip. The September 2007 issue of the "New England Journal of Medicine" reported that this medication, which is Food and Drug Administration approved to prevent osteoporosis, can also help heal hip fractures. Zoledronic acid is given intravenously, at intervals up to a year, during a short, 15-minute procedure; your doctor will determine the number and frequency of your treatments. People who are pregnant or who have kidney disease should not use zoledronic acid, according to Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, the makers of a brand name version of the drug called Reclast.
3. Ask your doctor if you should also be taking vitamin D or calcium supplements to help your bones heal. The "New England Journal of Medicine" study found that some participants had very low levels of vitamin D in their systems. Both vitamin D and calcium help bones remain strong.
4. Attend physical therapy if recommended by your doctor. Even if you have received zoledronic acid infusions, your doctor may want you to learn some strengthening exercises or to use mobility aids that help you get around your home to prevent future bone breaks.

An orgone blanket is supposed to naturally accumulate energy when used without using batteries. The theory behind it is that it stimulates the body's relaxation response, as well as imparting a bioenergetic charge. This supposedly allows the body to heal itself, relieve stress, ease any pain, recharge the immune system and sense of well being, and repair cellular damage. The blankets can be made in different sizes and with different strengths. If you choose to make an orgone blanket, you should be aware that the scientific and medical communities have dismissed the idea of "orgone energy" as having little or no basis in fact.
Instructions
1. Make a double layer from one layer of the steel wool and another of the cotton or wool. This is known as the "fold" in orgone accumulators of any kind. This will create a blanket that's 5 feet by 5 feet.
2. Make as many folds with the steel wool and the cotton or wool that you have to complete the inside layers of the blanket.
3. Place the thick cotton material over these layers like a casing. Sew the casing over the folds of the blanket around the edges to keep them together.
The National Osteoporosis Foundation reports that 44 million Americans suffer from osteporosis, a disease that causes the bones to become brittle. Fortunately, there are many treatment options available to people with osteoporosis.
History
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) was the preferred osteoporosis treatment method until a 2002 Women's Health Initiative study concluded that HRT often caused health complications like certain cancers and heart disease.
Medications
Doctors prescribe a number of drugs to treat osteoporosis, including Recast, Evista, Forteo, Tamoxifen, and Calcitonin. These drugs mimic certain hormones in the body, but are safer than HRT.
Weighted Kypho-orthosis
Weighted kypho-orthosis is a harness worn as part of a physical therapy used for osteoporosis treatment. While wearing it, patients perform a variety of exercises that reduce back pain and strengthen the bones.
Pain Control
The Mayo Clinic reports that chronic pain from osteoporosis often restricts mobility, which can exacerbate osteoporosis. Over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol and Advil assist in some cases, while in others doctors prescribe stronger pain relief.
Self-care
Diets high in calcium and vitamin D contribute to strong bones and help combat osteoporosis. Doctors encourage patients to practice good posture and prevent falls by wearing shoes with nonslip soles and clearing the home tripping hazards.
Shoulder pain is considered common by doctors and other medical professionals, due to the structure of the shoulder joint. The fact that the shoulder joint must have mobility and flexibility can be offset by the amount of stress and force that this area undergoes. Arms are large, heavy extremities in most cases, yet the need for nearly 360-degree rotation calls for a flexible yet durable joint. These facts contribute to the common occurrence of injury to the joint itself, including the rotator cuff, which can be routinely torn through relatively normal use. Thus a difficulty can occur in diagnosing tumors as a cause of shoulder pain.
Problems in Diagnosing
Any qualified physician may make a misdiagnosis of the presence of a tumor. The frequency of shoulder injuries and chronic disorders in the shoulder area may often mask the assumed necessity of testing for malignancy. According to the National Library of Medicine, rotator cuff tears are very common, as are chronic rheumatic conditions like arthritis, bursitis and tendinitis. The prominence of the bones in the shoulder area also makes them vulnerable to traumas such as blows and falls. This tendency toward misdiagnosis does not necessarily reflect negatively on the ability of physicians in general.
Symptoms
According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the main symptom of a shoulder tumor is the pain that the person afflicted with one will feel. This pain is very severe and could possibly even keep the patient awake at night. The ability to correctly diagnose a tumor, or neoplasm, as being the cause of shoulder pain requires extraordinary investigation by the examining doctor. Complaints of shoulder pain can result from falls or blows to the area, such as a fall from a bicycle or a fall to the ground by other means. These kinds of traumas can naturally result in pain if the shoulder was the area that received the brunt of the impact. Yet such traumas can and do result in damage to tissue in the area that can become malignant if not discovered.
Other Symptoms
Repeated actions that cause continual stress on a shoulder joint can also result in the growth of tumors. Some workplace duties may cause repetition of movement that engages the shoulder in a potentially degenerative way, such as pulling or pushing objects of great weight. Over time, this may cause significant damage to the surrounding muscle and cell tissue that could develop into a malignant tumor. While the original examination may only indicate a syndrome of overuse and stress, a more in-depth investigation may reveal deeper problems, such as a tumor.
More Symptoms
The onset of old age can often bring with it chronic pain in many areas of the body, particularly in joints. These areas undergo a great deal of stress over a lifetime, which will often cause the development of rheumatic conditions. Arthritis is the most common, yet damage to tendons and the bursae (tissue sacs) that protect joints can occur with constant use of the joint. However, time can also cause the onset of tissue damage resulting in tumors. Again, further examination will reveal if in fact any tumors accompany the other reported symptoms.
More Information
There can be other causes of tumors associated with shoulder pain. Genetic tendencies toward malignant growths in the body can show up in any area, including the shoulder. Autoimmune diseases can also contribute to the breakdown of cell generation in the shoulder area, which can lead to the onset of tumor growth. The possibility that tumors will be the cause of shoulder pain cannot be logically ruled out in any case.

Estimating target range with a rifle scope is relatively simple if the reticle is equipped with mil-dot tick marks on the cross-hairs. If not, you can still determine range with an educated guess of where the mil-dots would be. Keep in mind that scopes equipped with mil-dot reticules are designed to gauge distance in meters. The two elements involved are technique and mathematics. The technique entails measuring the number of mil-dots intervals over your target, and the mathematics encompasses converting that information into a usable range.
Instructions
1. Aim your scope at a target with a known height. For example, a target that is 1 meter tall (just over three feet).
2. Align the scope's horizontal cross-hair with the bottom of your target and count the number of mil-dots to the top of your target. As a matter of technique, it is permissible to align the target base with any mil-dot you choose provided that you can accurately measure the number of mil-dot intervals over your target.
3. Divide the known target height by the number of mil-dot intervals and multiply the answer by one thousand. This equation will give you the range to target in meters. For example if your target is 1 meter tall and is covers four mil-dot intervals then your equation would appear as: 1 ÷ 4 = .25 followed by .25 x 1000 = 250. Your range to target is 250 meters.
4. Refer to your distance conversion guide and convert the results into your preferred units of measurement.

High blood sugar can be a very serious medical condition. At first, high blood sugar can mean nothing more than feeling uncomfortable or having to visit the restroom twice an hour. When nothing is done about high blood sugar, however, a person faces serious health problems. An individual with exceedingly high blood pressure can slip into a coma and even die. By lowering your blood sugar before it gets too high, you can prevent both short term and long term health problems.
Instructions
1. Know the physical symptoms of high blood sugar. These can include excessive thirst, having to urinate more often than normal, blurry vision and excessive fatigue. If you feel this way, check your blood sugar at home (if you have a monitoring device) or contact your doctor.
2. Substitute water for your other drinks. Water will help to flush your system and can also help control your weight. A person with high blood sugar should drink at least 8 glasses of water a day as a way to lower his blood sugar.
3. Get a good amount of exercise every day. Walking 30 minutes to an hour every day can help to regulate and lower your blood sugar. Exercise can also lower your blood pressure and weight and also help to keep you from getting sick. Each of these things can have a significant impact on your blood sugar.
4. Eat a smaller amount of food than normal during your next meal. Failing to eat at all could cause your blood sugar to lower too much. Instead, cut your portions either by a third or in half, depending on how high your blood sugar was when you last tested it. You can have a small snack later if you are feeling hungry or if your sugar level decreases too much.
5. Eat the right foods during your next meal. Oatmeal, apples, beans and peas digest slowly in the body. This means that it takes more time for that food to have an impact on your blood sugar. Eating foods such as these will progressively lower high blood sugar. For more foods that can help lower high blood sugar, see Resources below.
6. Use relaxing techniques to ease stress. Stressful situations often cause your blood sugar to go up, which of course can lead to you becoming more stressed. This can start an awful cycle. Meditation or spending some time in quiet thought and reflection can help alleviate stress. Many people use yoga as a way to deal with stress, as well.

Having fun in the water helps kids overcome their fear.
Many parents enroll their kids in swimming lessons early so the children can learn swim while they are still young. Some kids do not want to go near the water, however. Making kids' swimming lessons fun will divert their attention and help them overcome their fear of water.
Swimming Gear
Kids who fear swimming pools can cry even before the swimming lessons start. One way to show kids how fun swimming can be is to provide fun swimming equipment. Use vibrant colors for swimming caps, goggles and floaters, and gear with cartoon themes is even better. Get the kids excited about their new swimming apparel and equipment and they'll be eager to get in the water.
Games
A swimming instructor can help children overcome fear by incorporating games in the swimming lessons. The first part of a swim lesson typically introduces kids to swimming equipment and safety measures. During this time, the instructor might play a game with students by asking them to guess the names of the different equipment. Children who are more comfortable in the water can be separated into groups for mini-relay races or other competitions.
Playtime
After the swimming lessons, allow kids to play with one another in the shallow part of the pool. Provide pool toys such as floaters, inflatable rafts and inflatable balls. Playtime can also be incorporated between lessons so the children can take a break from the lesson proper. Students will have something to look forward to during each session and will look forward to their next lesson. It is important to review safety precautions before each play period and to supervise the children while they are playing.
When trying to figure out bring heath care home, it is important that you are ready to do a little research. You need to find home health care providers, understand what types of conditions qualify for home health care, and determine how you will pay for the care.

1. Determine your needs. According to MayoClinic.com, if you or someone for whom are caring needs to recover from surgery, or is dealing with a chronic illness, bringing health care home is a good option. MayoClinic.com explains that when you bring health care home, there are different options available, such as having care provided by nurses or therapists to treat illness, or having someone help with cleaning, cooking, or running errands. Once you determine your needs, you can more easily determine what agency to contact. You can then explain to that agency, what kind of help you are seeking.
2. Make a list of the home health care providers in your area. You can find providers by performing an online search, or by looking through your local phone book. Consider speaking with a doctor if you are in need of recommendations for qualified home health care practitioners.
3. Contact providers. Make phone calls, send emails, and meet with potential health care providers in order to determine who and what works best for you in your particular circumstances.
4. Ask about qualifications. According to MayoClinic.com it is a good idea to find out qualifications regarding the home health care you are considering. Ask about licensing, certification, and reviews. Find out whether or not your state has specific requirements. Also, ask about the training provided by agencies to staff members. The Mayo Clinic also states that you should feel free to ask for references.
5. Determine costs. The Mayo Clinic suggests finding out how much the services you desire will cost, how payment is conducted, and whether or not bringing health care home to you is covered by insurance.
6. Set up home health care based on your comfort level. After researching several home health care options, weigh the pros and cons, and determine which type of health care feels right for you. When you bring health care home, it is a very personal experience. MayoClinic.com recommends monitoring the services you have enlisted, and if you are uncomfortable at any time, let the individual or the agency know so the situation can be resolved, or you can seek better support.

Pepper spray contains capsaicin, derived from chili peppers, and is a non-lethal substance used mainly by law enforcement officials in riot control and for subduing multiple criminals. Some individuals also carry small canisters of pepper spray for self-defense purposes. Citizens can purchase pepper spray to protect them against possible criminal attack or encounters with vicious animals such as dogs or bears.
Temporary Blindness
When sprayed in the face, pepper spray temporarily blinds an attacker by causing his eyes to swell shut for at least 10 minutes, and often longer.
Expert Insight
According to a study published in a 2000 issue of Journal of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, repeated exposure to pepper spray can cause changes in corneal sensitivity, although apparently not in visual acuity.
Pain
Pepper spray also causes burning sensations and pain to the skin.
Coughing
Uncontrollable coughing is another harmful effect of pepper spray.
Breathing Difficulty
Pepper spray causes breathing difficulty, which can be a dangerous effect for people with asthma or other breathing disorders.
A coccyx injury (coccydynia) is an injury to your tail bone, which is made up of three to five smaller bones located at the end of your spine. The coccyx could get injured or fractured due to a fall, direct blow, childbirth or straining during exercise. There are no treatments available other than steps to relieve the pain like simple lifestyle changes or professional medical treatments. Read on to learn more.
Instructions
Home Treatments
1. Sit on a hard surface or a cushion pillow (one with a hole in the center) depending upon your pain and comfort level. Coccyx injury also affects the ligaments and tendons surrounding the bone, so try not to sit for a long period continuously. If possible, consider leaning forward or sitting on each side of the buttocks to avoid pressure on the tail bone.
2. Apply ice to the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes every two hours for the first few days. After that, apply heat to relieve pain with warm, moist towels or warm bath. While soaking in a bathtub, lie down on your stomach.
3. Take stool softeners or fiber rich food to ease bowel movements and avoid constipation.
4. Use over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen as directed on the label.
5. Learn about personal experiences of other patients with similar problem at medical forums and sites such as the Coccyx website.
Medical Treatments
6. Consult with your physician if the pain gets worse. Your doctor could do further testing to determine whether to opt for surgical removal of the coccyx or prescribe stronger medications.
7. Treat severe coccyx pain with injections of corticosteroid after checking with your physician. These injections given around the coccyx or into the joint provide some relief although not permanent. In some cases, the injections have to be repeated depending upon the course of treatment.
8. Opt for acupuncture, relaxation massages, physical therapy or homeopathy.

There are several over-the-counter medications used to clear up congestion.
Many of us at some point have suffered from congestion and chest pain. People usually have these symptoms when suffering form a cold or flu, but there are many other conditions that can cause these symptoms.
Condition
Health conditions such as pneumonia, bronchitis and upper respiratory infections can all cause uncomfortable symptoms such as congestion and chest pain.
Accompanying Symptoms
Symptoms that may accompany congestion and chest pain are coughing, sneezing, sinus pressure, runny nose, headache and dizziness. The symptoms that accompany the congestion and chest pain will pinpoint what condition is causing it.
Causes
Many of the causes of congestion and chest pain are bacterial or viral. These germs can be picked up by touching contaminated objects, or by inhaling droplets when an ill person coughs or sneezes.
Treatments
General congestion can be cleared up with over-the-counter expectorants such as Robitussin. But if this congestion is accompanied with pains in the chest, see your physician immediately, as you may have developed pneumonia.
Cautions
In addition to various illnesses, congestion and chest pain can also signal more serious health problems such as cardiac arrest and anaphylactic shock. Symptoms of cardiac arrest are shooting pains in the arms and legs, confusion and a feeling of pressure on the chest. Symptoms of anaphylactic shock are swelling of the tongue, difficulty breathing and coughing.
Power wheels are small motorized vehicles built for children to ride and drive. These vehicles are sold in stores as a 6-volt unit. It is powered by a 6-volt battery usually found either in a front or rear storage compartment. The motors used for these vehicles is usually a 12-volt motor. By using a 6-volt battery with a 12-volt motor, the life of the motor is extended. However, as children get older they may seek more speed and power. To accomplish that, a second battery can be added to provide a full 12 volts to the motor.
Instructions
1. Locate and open the battery compartment. Set the second battery in the battery compartment beside the first battery. Identify the positive and negative terminals of each battery. There should be a positive and negative wire running from the first battery over to the motor control.
2. Take the black negative wire and cut in half halfway between the battery and the motor control. Strip a 1/2 inch of insulation off of the ends of both black wire ends that were just cut.
3. Connect the first black wire end, that runs to the negative terminal of the first battery, to the positive terminal of the second battery. Connect the second black wire, that connects to the motor control, to the negative terminal of the second battery. The connections can be made with alligator clip connectors or wire connectors. This connects the two 6-volt batteries in series to produce a total of 12 volts.

A colon cleanse is a procedure you can use to remove toxin buildup in your body. The cleanse involves flushing the intestinal track with fluids and other chemicals. The end results is a healthy intestinal track, a boost in energy and a enhanced immune system. Before you do a colon cleanse, there are several items you should consume to make the procedure work correctly.
Drink Water & Other Fluids
Before a colon cleanse, drink plenty of water and vitamin-enriched juices. Only drink pure fruit juices. Avoid added preservatives and juices that only contain a small percentage of fruit. Keep hydrated because colon cleansing can rob the body of fluids.
Eat A Diet Rich In Fiber
Eat a diet rich in vegetables, whole grains and legumes. The fiber found in vegetables, grains and beans will prevent constipation and other problems that may arise after a cleansing. Juice your vegetables into a smoothie or shake if you don't like eating vegetables. Other foods to eat: peas, apples, citrus fruits and carrots.
Omega 3 or Flax Seed Oil
Use Omega 3 oil and take it according to the package's instructions. Omega 3 oil comes in both liquid and pill form. You can also take flax seed oil. Both Omega 3 and flax seed oil help stabilize the blood sugar levels in the body.
Want to give an Oscar worthy performance and openly weep in front of an audience?
Your audience may be seated theater guests, a director and cameraman or your family and friends.
Or you're trying to manipulate your way through a sticky situation and a few tears may get you a little mercy from the jury, angry spouse, or disappointed parent.
Whatever your motivation, here's some tips on getting your cry on. Try these different approaches alone, in front of your mirror. See which one works best for you and bring down the house!
Instructions
1. The Old Fashioned: Make yourself sad.
Basically, think sad thoughts until the tears come. The best way is to truly feel sad about what you're talking about. But if you can think about a sad thing and talk about something else, go for it.
If you can do this on cue and you can do this believably, get on the next flight to Hollywood. We need you.
2. The Chemical Approach: Put something in your eye.
Some say glycerin drops (which can be found in many theatrical supply stores), or rubbing a menthol stick under the eyes (also found at the theatrical store). Some cut onions.
This writer suggests NOT doing these. When will you discreetly drop stuff in your eye? What if you spend more time reacting to the physical discomfort? And why smell like onions the whole time?
Silliness.
3. Bored to Tears Approach: Yawn with your eyes open.
If you yawn one or two times with your eyes open, you'll tear up. Some actors let their lips quiver with the pre-yawn, cover their face with their hands for the actual yawn, and look up with tears.
This takes much practice. It's not for everyone.
4. Masochistic Approach: Hurt Yourself
Another one not suggested. Because, well, it hurts. But you can pinch yourself very hard. Nose hairs. Those hurt. If you're "lucky" enough to have nose hairs you can pluck with your fingers, hide behind a hand, pluck and tear up. If you can turn away, grab a mirror and tweezers and turn back around real fast, then you're a talent and should try a career in slight of hand magic.
Don't make yourself bruise, bleed or scar. Then it's going to be real tears and that will be so counter-productive.
5. The Hardest Method: Don't cry
As an actor, some of the best performances are watching a person hold back tears.
As a manipulator, sometimes the best method is not to cry for pity but instead face the situation with some honesty. Then if you cry it's because you did the right thing.

When you create an exercise routine after your hip replacement surgery, you will be expediting healing and successful recovery. Deciding which kind of routine you will implement is very important. To do this, you will need to work with your physical therapist and doctor to develop a plan that is right for your needs.
Instructions
Set Up an Exercise Plan
1. Talk with your doctor and physical therapist before the surgery to create an exercise routine you should do after your surgery. They will provide a list of approved exercises for your routine.
2. Practice these exercises before the surgery. Strengthen the leg and hip areas as much as possible to speed recovery.
3. Determine when you are ready to begin exercise after your surgery, but don't delay. In some cases, your physical therapist may have you begin exercises the day of the surgery.
4. Work through your exercises with a physical therapist once or twice a week after your surgery, as directed. She can recommend other exercises to add to your list as you recover and can also monitor that you are performing them correctly.
Try Some of These Exercises
5. Lie flat on your back with your legs extended in front of you. Slide your heel towards your body and then extend your leg to the flat position and relax. Repeat this as many times as your physical therapist requests.
6. Sit on a hard backed chair and lift your leg out in front of you. Hold for a moment and then release to the normal relaxed position with your foot flat on the floor.
7. Lie on your back with your legs extended in front of you. Lift your toes toward the sky and then point them downwards.
8. Lie on your back with your legs extended in front of you. Tighten your thigh and press your knee downwards. Hold this for a few moments and then relax and repeat.
9. Place a pillow or towel underneath your knee. Lift your heel so that it is parallel with the surface beneath you. Hold a moment and then relax.

Face cream is one of the oldest cosmetic products, invented by the Greek physician Galen nearly 2,000 years ago, when he combined oil, wax, and rose water. This basic face cream is easy to make at home, and very inexpensive. Using this method, you can make the equivalent of many expensive face creams on the market today for a fraction of the cost. This recipe makes approximately six ounces of natural, soothing face cream, which can be used as a cleanser, moisturizer, or to prevent blemishes.
Instructions
1. Combine ½ ounce white wax with one ounce lanolin in a glass pan or double boiler. Heat the mixture over a low flame until the ingredients are completely melted, about three to five minutes, stirring constantly.
2. Add 3 ounces sweet almond oil and 1 ounce rose water slowly to the wax and lanolin mixture. Stir constantly while adding. Remove the pan from heat.
3. Add five to 10 drops essential oil of choice, if desired. If you decide to add essential oil, choose for your skin type. Try using rose or lavender for normal to dry skin, tea tree or peppermint for oily or acne prone skin, and rose geranium or neroli for sensitive skin.
4. Transfer the face cream to a low tub or jar. Label with the contents and date. Place the jar in the refrigerator if the cream has not been used within 30 days, where it will keep an additional 30 days.
5. To use the face cream, apply directly to the face, massaging laugh lines upwards, and over the cheek toward the outer section of the eye. Pat the under eye areas delicately with the cream, and gently massage crow's feet upward toward the temples. Massage the forehead from the middle, moving outward, while applying the face cream.

Male facial hair begins to develop from about the age of 11, and continues to develop until the early 20s. Early growth facial hair may be patchy and uneven, localizing in certain areas and not others. Men over the age of 20 who have excessively thin facial hair could have a hormonal condition, skin condition or circulation problems. Here are some of the causes of a lack of facial hair, and a few ways to increase the growth of facial hair:
Low Testosterone
Men who have low testosterone levels will have low facial hair growth and might need hormonal supplements. Check with your doctor to see if a testosterone test might be in order.
Skin Problems
Psoriasis or eczema can cause uneven facial hair growth and can hinder facial hair from growing until after the skin has been treated. If you have had severe psoriasis, there could be a permanent hair loss. Psoriasis and eczema can be treated with creams and topical solutions you can get at your dermatologist.
Alopecia
Alopecia, which is a form of hair loss that typically effects the head, can progress to include the face. This can cause patches of hair loss or complete hair loss on the face. There are types of steroid creams that help with alopecia, so check with your doctor or dermatologist.
Massage as Treatment
Give yourself a daily massage to increase circulation to the area where facial hair is thin. Increasing circulation can activate the hair growth by increasing blood flow and oxygen to the follicles.
Rogaine as Treatment
Rogaine has been used successfully by some people on their facial hair (see Resources). Check with your doctor first.

Arthroscopic surgery is a type of laser treatment for spinal disorders. It is minimally invasive, which cuts down on bleeding and other trauma, and it requires only local anesthesia. This surgery involves the use of fiber-optic instruments to examine the damaged area of the spine. It is an outpatient procedure, with minimal incisions.
Procedure
Arthroscopic surgery begins with a small incision, through which a small tube will enter. Additional tubes will enter through this incision, each being larger than the previous one, with the last tube having a diameter of 18 mm. The surgeon removes the other tubes once the last one is in place. The gradual enlargement of the tubes will allow for the skin and muscles to dilate with minimal trauma. The operation takes place via the remaining tube, through which the surgeon inserts a fiber-optic camera and lasers to perform the procedure.
Types
There are four main types of arthroscopic surgery for the spine. The first is foraminotomy, which is treatment for foraminal stenosis, nerve-root compression, sciatica, herniated discs, spinal arthritis, scar tissue, bone spurs, and pinched nerves. Foraminotomy involves removal of bone and tissue compressing the root of a spinal nerve.
The second type is laminotomy, which is for the treatment of herniated discs, spinal arthritis, spinal stenosis, bone spurs, scar tissue and pinched nerves and for removal of the ligamentum flavum, which is the largest ligament of the spine. This surgery removes a section of the lamina, a bony plate that covers the spinal canal and nerves on each vertebra. The objective is to decrease pressure on the nerves by creating more space around the roots of nerves and the spinal cord.
The third type is percutaneous arthroscopic discectomy, which is treatment for bulging or herniated discs. This procedure involves removal of the bulging or herniated disc to relieve compression of nerve roots and the spine. A laser will vaporize the affected disc.
The fourth type is facet thermal ablation, which is treatment for facet disease, facet arthritis, facet degeneration, facet hypertrophy and facet joint syndrome. The surgery deadens the pain-causing nerve.
Benefits
Traditional open-back spinal surgery, which is rarely performed anymore, involves major cutting, so it is highly invasive and trauma-inducing. Arthroscopic surgery is a much more streamlined type of treatment for spinal nerve disorders that allows for relatively gentle handling of the skin and tissue in the affected area. The incision is small, so it barely leaves a trace during recovery, and the recovery itself is faster and easier than the one associated with traditional spine surgery. Arthroscopic surgery also only takes 45 minutes on average.
Considerations
Before undergoing surgery, you should speak with your doctor about any aspirin, anti-inflammatory medication or blood thinners that you take because these could affect how you handle the surgery.
Success Rate
The Bonati Institute of Hudson, Florida reports an immediate success rate of 90 percent for arthroscopic spinal surgery. The success rate for maintained effectiveness of the treatment is more than 90 percent over a three-month, six-month and one-year period after surgery. These success rates include patients who have had previously failed open-back surgery.

Tooth crowns are used for three primary purposes: to restore a tooth to its original shape, to strengthen the tooth or to enhance its appearance. In many cases, the crown is used to encase a tooth that has been damaged by tooth decay, such as cavities or gum disease. Crowns should be installed by a licensed dentist, and they come with some risk of pain after the procedure.
Sensitivity to Hot and Cold
With a temporary crown, some sensitivity to heat and cold, especially liquids, is expected because the temporary crown is less precise. The sensitivity in a permanent crown can be found where the crown meets the gum line. Sometimes, a dentist will prescribe a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. If the sensitivity becomes too much, you should see your dentist immediately so he can determine if there is a problem.
An Incorrect Bite
A bite problem is something that can occur in a temporary or a permanent crown. In either case, an incorrect bite is when the new crown meets its opposing tooth before the rest of the teeth around it. This incorrect bite can cause a jarring feeling in your mouth and lead to tooth pain in and around the crown. In most cases, the fix is a simple one. Make an appointment to see your dentist and have the crown adjusted by filing the top down so it meets the opposite tooth appropriately. The situation will not correct itself and can lead to the need for a replacement crown.
Gum Pain
Because the dentist needed to work with the original tooth at or near the gum line, the gums around the new crown will hurt. Normally, the pain is quite tolerable and goes away in a couple of days. To aid the healing process, you can rinse with warm saltwater up to three times per day. If the pain is persistent, or seems to be getting worse, call your dentist.
Tooth Pain
Because the dentist must use a drill to shape your tooth for preparation for the crown, it's likely that your tooth will be in some pain in the days after the procedure. It's not uncommon for the pain to feel dull, especially if there's a temporary crown on the old tooth. For minor pain, you can use an over-the-counter pain reliever to take care of the pain until the new crown settles in. If it persists or gets worse, call your dentist.
Root Canal
The process of getting a crown is not perfect. In some cases, the original tooth is so decayed or diseased that even a crown isn't a good solution. If you experience pain deep inside the gum, it could be an indication that the nerve of the original tooth has become infected or even diseased. In this case, your dentist will likely need to do a root canal on the diseased tooth to stop the pain. That will required the removal of the crown and then reinstalling the crown.

Dogs are pack animals by nature, and, without their pack, they can suffer from anxiety. When a dog is alone it may scratch carpet, chew linoleum flooring or trim, bark uncontrollably, whine, yelp, and pee on your sofa. A dog can be taught to manage anxiety with a little help from a loving and patient owner.
Instructions
1. Get your dog some good toys that will keep it busy while you are away. Make sure the toys are high quality and not easily torn or broken. Toys that make noise can keep your dog entertained as well. Buying a dog bed can also help your dog separate from you better. Do everything from feeding to training your dog while he is on the dog bed. This will help him associate the bed as a positive thing, and over time he may lay on the bed when he feels anxious, instead of destroy your house.
2. Teach the dog some basic manners and commands. When your dog responds well to a command, reward it with a treat. Remember to do this on the dog bed you purchased, and do it a couple times a day for a few minutes.
3. Take time away from your dog while at home by putting the dog in another room or making yourself unattainable for short periods of time. This will help show the dog that you always come back no matter how long you have been gone.
4. Start leaving a TV or radio on while you are gone from home. The noise will make the pooch feel more at ease and not feel so lonely. You can even go as far as to make recordings of yourself talking to the dog or reading out loud.
5. Put a shirt that you have slept in somewhere accessible to the dog so that even when you are not there, your smell is.
6. Talk to your veterinarian if anxiety persists. He may prescribe medication for the dog. Even the most patient and loving dog owners cannot always cure canine anxiety on their own.

Abnormal uterine bleeding is often caused by hormone imbalance in a woman's body. This can cause a woman to bleed during the period when she is not menstruating or spotting.
Causes
More specific causes of abnormal uterine bleeding include polyps or fibroids in the uterus, which can cause bleeding, infection or even cancer.
Birth Control Pills
One popular form of treatment for abnormal uterine bleeding is birth control pills, which contain hormones that can prevent the uterus lining from thickening.
Intrauterine Device
If birth control pills aren't stopping the bleeding, a doctor may prescribe an intrauterine (IUD) device. An IUD is a plastic device that is inserted into a woman's uterus to prevent pregnancy.
Surgery
In rare cases, surgery may be needed to stop abnormal bleeding. Two surgical procedures are recommended: hysterectomy and endometrial ablation.
Tips
Speak with a doctor before deciding upon a treatment for abnormal uterine bleeding, and if any of these treatment options are causing negative side effects, seek medical advice.

While most mosquito bites are an annoying nuisance, some mosquitoes also carry serious diseases, such as meningitis and West Nile virus. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water, making a deserted swimming a potential hotbed for mosquito larvae. With the proper care, mosquitoes can be prevented from visiting deserted swimming pools.
Significance
Mosquitoes require water to place their eggs. The eggs float on the surface of water in clusters of more than 100. Deserted swimming pools, either where the water has been left untreated or where rainwater has collected in puddles in drained pools, are a prime location, as is still swamp water. Even water that has collected in an abandoned tire can serve as place for mosquitoes to lay eggs.
Identification
Mosquitoes cannot lay eggs in well-maintained swimming pools, because the chlorine and other chemicals kill eggs. The filtration system in an actively used swimming pool also disposes of the eggs. However, deserted swimming pools are not maintained in the same manner. There are no chemicals to treat the ones that still have water, and rainwater can collect and stand still in an empty deserted pool, making them an inviting place for mosquitoes to deposit their eggs.
History
According to CBS Dallas/Fort Worth, the 2008 housing crisis had a direct effect on the growth of mosquitoes in Texas and other parts of the United States. Foreclosures forced people out of their homes, leaving houses and swimming pools vacant for a long period of time. Without the proper care, these pools became stagnant and a good place for mosquitoes to lay eggs.
Prevention/Solution
Deserted pools can be treated with Mosquito Dunks, according to the Rockland County Department of Health. They are larvicides that kill young mosquitoes in water before they become biting adults. You can buy Mosquito Dunks at nurseries, hardware stores and pet stores. The Dunks are generally harmless to humans and animals, although in some cases they can cause skin or eye irritation.
Warning
If mosquito populations are not controlled, the risk increases for West Nile virus. While most people will not be seriously affected by the disease, others are at risk of developing a serious case of the disease that is potentially fatal. By limiting breeding grounds in your area, such as deserted pools, you are also cutting down the risk of diseases like the West Nile virus.

Foods made from grains not only taste good, they are great for your health. They contain vitamin B, antioxidants, fiber and numerous minerals. To get the maximum health benefits, you should include the daily recommended daily allowance of grains in your diet. Three servings a day (48 grams) can dramatically reduce your chances for heart disease, strokes, diabetes and cancer.
Instructions
Get the Daily Recommended Daily Allowance of Grains
1. Understand which foods are considered grains. They include wheat, corn, brown rice, oatmeal, barley, and rye. Other foods in this category are grains and flours made from buckwheat, wheat berries and wild rice.
2. Add grain foods to your breakfast. In the morning, you can have oatmeal or buckwheat cereal. Another option is whole meal waffles or pancakes.
3. Prepare some simple grain dishes for lunch. Make yourself a sandwich using whole wheat, rye or multigrain bread. You can use lean chicken or turkey breast as your meat for the sandwich to keep the entire meal nutritional.
4. Include whole grains with your dinner as a side or main dish. You can have corn tortillas, whole grain pita or bagels. You can also add grains to casseroles, soups and salads. It just takes a half cup of brown or wild rice to give you about 8 grams of fiber.
5. Add grains to your snacks. Try multigrain chips and crackers or air popped popcorn.
Gamat is the Malaysian word for several types of sea cucumbers that are used for their healing powers and are often made into lotions or potions. The healing power of gamat is legendary, and it is used in Malaysia for wound healing, vitality, internal healing and to give the skin an even texture and sheen. Gamat and gamat products are now beginning to be available online and in health food stores, and many researchers are studying other varieties of sea cucumber for therapeutic value.
History
Legend has it that the healing power of Gamat was discovered by a fisherman who observed a sea cucumber completely heal itself and become whole after it was cut entirety in half. Gamat is widely used by many different traditional Malaysian people to heal their own injuries and is found at night, on pristine beaches, where the water is pure and clean.
Types
The word Gamat is used to describe an ointment or preparation made from one of the several varieties of sea cucumber. Sea cucumbers are actually animals, not plants, that inhabit the sea floor and are sometimes washed up onto beaches at low tide. Gamat is called teripang in Indonesia, where it is used in much the same way as Malaysia. Sea cucumbers are used as food by many cultures in the Pacific Rim, including China and Australia.
Uses
Gamat is used directly on sores, cuts and wounds on the skin, as well as internally for ulcers and other ailments that involve internal damage. Gamat is believed to be able to speed wound recovery time and to help new tissue form in humans just as the sea cucumber's ability to quickly regenerate its own body tissue when damaged. Gamat is also used as a cosmetic product on the skin to add luster and glow and promote smoothness and evenness.
Potential
Recently, a team of researchers at Kyushu University in Japan discovered two new molecules in a species of sea cucumber called Holothuria leucospilota, and they published their findings in April 2001 in the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Bulletin. The molecules were able to stimulate nerve cell growth in rat cells in the laboratory. The researchers mention that similar molecules are also present in nine other species of the sea cucumber, as well as the eggs of sea urchins.
Significance
Sea cucumbers are very common throughout the Pacific and form dense colonies, especially in shallow water. The potential of using species of sea cucumber for Gamat potions to heal wounds and promote cell growth is high. Gamat, the Malaysian healing wonder, may soon find its way into the first-aid kits of the modern world.
Starting your own spa business can be a rewarding venture if you proceed with an effective plan. Spas appeal primarily to middle- and upper-class working people and stay-at-home spouses who see them as a way of relieving stress and escaping from the pressures of life at work and at home. The business model for a spa is very specific -- quite different from that of a typical restaurant or retail location.
Instructions
1. Create a business plan. Identify the specific services that you want to offer to your target clients and name them in your business plan. Understanding competition is a crucial step that could help you develop a strong and compelling business plan. Your business plan must also contain the theme you want to reflect in your business.
2. Attend a business management skills training course specific to the operations of a spa. Acquiring the technical knowledge specific to the business you want to start helps you to know the best way of offering your services since it helps you to know your target client. Many businesses fail due to a lack of industry-specific knowledge on the part of the owner and operator.
3. Get all necessary business documents in order. Depending on the type of spa you are going to open, you may need to obtain a special license. For example, if you plan on opening a medical spa, you must get a medical license. Most spas do not require a federal license, but your state may require you to obtain one. To know whether you need a license for your spa in your state, you can go to the sba.gov website. You also need to obtain a business permit and request an Employer Identification Number at the Internal Revenue Service office.
4. Choose an effective location for your business, as location is often key to success. Consider places in which a spa would be most successful, such as close to or inside malls, close to other salons and spas or close to shopping centers. Make sure that the location you choose helps you to gain exposure to your target clients. Detail the specific advantages of this location in your business plan.
5. Decide on a source of capital. For a spa business, you may have to apply for a loan because of the substantial monetary requirements. Various financial institutions offer business start-up loans for such ventures. The amount you plan to borrow should be based on your business plan.
6. Visit a specialty store that offers spa equipment. However, do not buy the first items you see, since you still have the chance to compare the prices offered by different stores you intend to check. Some of these stores also maintain online stocks, which may be more convenient for some people.
7. Hire the staff needed for the spa and provide them with the necessary training for the spa services to be rendered.
8. Decide on when to open the spa according to your budget and best season for a spa business. In many places, the months before summer start and the actual summer season are the best season to open an spa, since many people go on vacations. Advertise your spa through practical and effective tools, such as newspaper advertisement, online ad placements and banners.

If you walk barefoot through your yard, you will know instantly if you come into contact with a stinging nettle plant. Stinging nettles have small, hair-like stingers on their leaves, and when they come into contact with human skin they cause an irritated reaction. Your skin will swell and feel painful for a while, but eventualy the stinging will go away on its own. There are ways, though, that you can speed up the pain relief.
Instructions
1. Rub a paste of baking soda and water over the inflamed area. Let it sit on your skin until you experience relief from the pain and itching, which shouldn't take long. Rinse to remove the paste.
2. Apply sticky tape over the inflamed area if some of the spiny nettle hairs are still stuck in your skin. When you peel off the tape, the nettle hairs should be gone; if not, repeat as necessary to remove all of them.
3. Wash your skin with soap and water and pat dry. Avoid rubbing the skin dry, as this will only irritate it further. Then coat your skin with calamine lotion to soothe it; repeat as necessary until the pain and irritation have disappeared.
4. Use "Doc" leaves, otherwise known as Rumex obtusifolia leaves, to soothe your skin. Squeeze the leaves and rub them on your irritated skin; they will release a moist sap that will soothe the pain. This rubbing motion will also help to redistribute the pain, making it less severe in any one area.
