How Do People Become Addicted To Alcohol

Genetic Factors

Though the exact mechanics remain unknown, it has long been suspected that there is a genetic component to alcoholism, meaning people are more likely to suffer from alcoholism if there is a family history. A combination of neurological and physical factors contribute to this, including abnormal levels of serotonin, a major brain chemical messenger, and a smaller amygdala, the region of the brain responsible for the emotional aspects of craving.

Environmental Factors

Environmental factors can also trigger or cause alcoholism. Constant or overuse of alcohol can cause the addiction, affecting a patient's neurochemistry in such a way that, over time, will cause chemical dependency and withdrawal symptoms during periods of alcoholic abstinence.

Emotional Causes

Alcoholism can be triggered by heightened emotional episodes during the patient's life. Trauma, stress or other related factors can cause people who drink to use alcohol as a crutch, increasing the risk for alcoholism.

Causes Of Condom Breakage

There are several reasons condoms accidentally break.

Condoms come in many sizes and styles. They are all intended to protect you from sexually transmitted disease and to help prevent unwanted pregnancy. However, condoms are not foolproof. And in some instances, a condom may break. By knowing some of the causes of condom breakage, you can avoid those unwanted results.

Too Old

Like many products on the market, condoms become ineffective if not used within a certain amount of time. Many popular brands of condoms actually come with a suggested expiration date printed on each individual wrapper. A condom that has not been used before this date has a higher chance of breaking due to aging, dryness and other natural causes. If you are unsure of the age of a condom, you should try to find one that is brand new.

Wrong Size

It is only natural that all men come in different sizes. This is why many condom manufacturers make condoms that come in different sizes. There is no specific sizing chart as in shoes or hats. But many condoms come in sizes like large and extra large. If a man wears a condom that is too small or too tight, there is a greater chance that the condom will tear or break during intercourse. If a condom feels too tight, you should play it safe and try a larger one.

Proper Storage

A condom can only be effective if it is stored properly. If you do not take good care of the condom before it is used, it can be damaged in many ways. For instance, a condom that is kept in a wallet can quickly become ripped, creased or folded making it weaker when it is finally used. The wrapper the condom is stored in can also tear causing the fluid inside to leak out, leaving the condom dry and brittle. Conditions like heat or direct sunlight can also damage the integrity of a condom and cause it to break. It is best to keep condoms in a safe, cool place where they can avoid damage.

Incorrect Use

How you use a condom can also lead to breakage during intercourse. If you put the condom on wrong, unroll it incorrectly or stretch it, it could tear. If you use the wrong kind of lubricant along with your condom, it may react with the materials of the condom and make it weaker. Not using any lubricant can also lead to too much friction and cause a tear. Rough use during sex is also another common cause of condoms tearing. It is best if you use the condom as it is intended and follow the directions on the box.

Train For A Cdl License

A CDL license is required for those who drive certain trucks and other vehicles.

Regulations for drivers of motor vehicle carriers are typically the same in all states.

A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for semi trucks, tanker trucks, large towing trucks, delivery vehicles and buses that can transport at least 16 people. Besides a general CDL license, certain types of trucks, loads or situations require further training and endorsements to the general CDL. Endorsement certificates are not usually covered in general truck driver training, and the trainee must have a valid CDL driver's license to train and test for the endorsements.

Instructions

Get Training

1. Choose a CDL training school for your needs. A good school will offer basic driving courses, plus training for endorsements you may need for various types of driving jobs.

2. Take a physical. A physical is required before taking the test for a CDL driver's license.

3. Take a general knowledge test, which shows that the person understands the class of vehicles they will be driving. All CDL learners must first pass this test. Your school can provide you with study materials. After passing this test, you may go to a licensing station and take a written test to obtain a driver's learning permit.

4. Study in a classroom to learn driving rules and procedures, record-keeping and licensing requirements.

5. Drive with a certified trainer. Learn inspect a vehicle, keep log-book records and drive the vehicle. Drive in different types of weather as well as during the day and night.

6. Take the school's written and driving tests in order to receive your certificate of completion for the course.

7. Take the test for a CDL license after receiving your certification from the school. A CDL driver's license from the Department of Transportation is required.

Endorsements

8. Train for and take a passenger transport test to obtain a bus driver license. Drivers of school buses, city buses, private bus lines and special buses like elderly transportation must pass a passenger bus driver test and have that endorsement on their CDL driver's license.

9. Take a written air brake test and demonstrate the proper skills in handling vehicles with air brakes to obtain the air brake endorsement. Semi trucks have air brakes, as do other trucks in which the gross vehicle weight is over 10,000 pounds.

10. Pass a hazard materials test to demonstrate knowledge and procedures for handling emergencies involving hazardous solids, liquids or gases. Hazmat training is also required for this endorsement.

11. Get a bulk liquids endorsement to drive tanker trucks that contain milk, syrups and other liquids. Drivers must pass a written test and demonstrate to licensing personnel that they know the rules as well as emergency procedures for hauling liquids.

12. Obtain an endorsement if your job will require you to pull double or triple trailers, also known as piggy-back semi-trailers.

Metaphysical Properties Of Muscovite

Muscovite is a mineral, also known as mica, found in metamorphic and igneous rock formations. It separates into thin, clear sheets that look like glass but are easily bent and snap back to shape instead of breaking. Muscovite is used in high temperature ovens and as a heat and electrical insulator because it is fireproof and withstands extreme temperatures. It was named for an area near Moscow (Muscovy) where it was mined and used to produce windows. The crystal is clear, white silver, pink, brown, green, violet, yellow and rose red. It is found in Russia, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, the Czech Republic and the USA.

Physical Uses

Muscovite is used by crystal healers to allow the patient to take responsibility for their own healing. They will most likely follow the practitioner's instructions to the letter. Wear any color of muscovite as jewelry to give extra energy or induce restful sleep and dispel insomnia. Those having diabetes may find it helpful to regulate blood sugar levels, as it regulates pancreatic secretions and helps the kidneys work to their full potential. It also helps to dispel allergic reactions and works to balance all the body's systems.

Spiritual Uses

Feel Feminine After A Hysterectomy

Feel Feminine After a Hysterectomy

Over 500,000 women in America have a hysterectomy each year. Though the reasons for the procedure will vary, the result of feeling less feminine will be the same in many cases. For some women, the fact of physically losing the womb is a deep emotional loss grieved as severely as a death. Learn ways to cope with feeling less feminine and boost mood level after hysterectomy.

Instructions

1. Be positive going into it. Some women fear loosing their sex drive so much they begin feeling less feminine even before surgery. Having the procedure done with this attitude can have a mental affect on sexual desire afterward. Be positive and believe intimacy will be better than before.

2. Know the facts about your particular surgery. Talk to your doctor about whether or not your ovaries absolutely have to be removed. Ask lots of questions and sometimes the answers are positively surprising.

3. Become aware of yourself as separate from your uterus. This is a common problem among women with hysterectomies. Just knowing that the womb is needed for pregnancy can make a woman feel less feminine when it is removed. Don't think that if you're not able to have children you're any less of a woman.

4. Talk with your partner beforehand about your fears of feeling less feminine and the possible side effects of surgery. Come up with new ways to be intimate and make it exciting since intercourse and loss of sensation might be an issue at first.

5. Discuss medication with your physician. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) could be necessary, especially if both ovaries are being removed. Providing the body with supplemental hormones like estrogen might help to feel more feminine.

6. Buy something pretty and sexy for yourself before surgery and keep it in your bedroom. Every time you're looking at the item it will be a conscious reminder of feeling sexual. Do something like get a pedicure, manicure or gentle massage to feel rejuvenated and feminine.

7. Prepare to make adjustments to improve your feelings towards sexuality. The body does change physically during hysterectomy, but if feelings of loss of femininity take over seek professional help. Medications to help moods, especially depression, could be helpful if needed.

Advantages & Disadvantages Of Ointments

Advantages & Disadvantages of Ointments

People use ointments for a variety of reasons, such as soothing pain and oftentimes to medicate themselves. It is important for consumers to take responsibility and know what the benefits and adverse effects are of using ointments.

Effective Topical

Some ointments show improvement when used to treat skin diseases, such as psoriasis and fifth disease. Ointments have shown to relieve infective eye diseases too.

Moisturizing

Ointments are used as moisturizers-normally a combination of 80 percent oil and 20 percent water. This combination locks in moisture more effectively than creams and lotions, which are normally made with more water.

Application

Ointments are simple to apply on the skin and other areas. There is no need for complicated procedures.

Side Effects

Strong ointments and improper use may cause such problems as skin allergies, dryness, lesions and even a permanent thinning of the skin.

Texture

Ointments, which can be petroleum- or oil-based, tend to be greasy and occlusive.

Replace Mercury Fillings Safely In British Columbia Canada

Potentially dangerous vapors are released when mercury amalgam fillings are removed

People who want to replace mercury amalgam fillings should choose a dentist versed in the risks associated with removing these fillings. Ask whether your dentist is trained in proper techniques and has made office modifications to reduce the chance of exposure to mercury vapor during the procedure.

Health Canada has concluded low level absorption from existing mercury amalgam fillings does not contribute to illness in the general population. While mercury vapor is considered toxic, clinical information on toxicity is based on long term studies in industrial settings. Health Canada suggests the evidence does not warrant removal of existing mercury amalgam fillings. Ironically the removal process may create a more serious threat of exposure when mercury components in the fillings vaporize.

Public concern about the safety of mercury amalgam fillings is high.

Instructions

Choosing the Right Dentist

1. Dental procedure rooms should have air purifiers to deliver an alternative source of clean air. Patients should be fitted with a nasal hood, dental dam and goggles. A high-volume suction aspirator should be used to evacuate released vapors. Patients should have their faces covered with a surgical drape during the procedure.

2. Fiillings should be kept cool using large amounts of cold-water spray during extraction. This reduces mercury vapors. Drilling sprays should be modified to spray from three ports rather than the standard single port. Extraction should be performed by cutting away chunks of amalgam rather than grinding.

3. Standard paper hygienic masks offer no protection to dental staff against mercury vapor inhalation. Full face respirators should be worn by technicians during removal.

4. Dentists should be familiar with proper disposal practices under Environment Canada's Standard on Mercury for Dental Amalgam Waste. The Canadian Dental Association has agreed to practice voluntary compliance in assuring the safe disposal of waste products into the environment.

Negative Effects Of Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery was designed to make the human body look better. Thousands of people have these operations done every year to change their face and body. What many of these people don't realize is that there are negative effects to the surgery, ranging from emotional issues to cost and the risks they take when they lie on the table.

Side Effects

Though thousands of people undergo cosmetic and plastic surgery every year, there are some side effects to the procedures. This varies depending on the exact operation. Some patients have experienced headaches, nausea and prolonged pain. Another common side effect reported is inflammation surrounding the area of the body where the procedure was done. These side effects generally dissipate over time but can be bad in the beginning. Individuals may also experience bruising in areas of their body.

Cost

When people decide to undergo cosmetic surgery, they often consult a professional who gives them an estimate as to the cost. This estimate isn't a binding contract, but a guess as to how much the procedure will cost. The actual cost can rise dramatically over this estimate, leading patients to suffer pressure to pay the entire amount even if they cannot afford it. When the cost is spread out over a payment plan, it can cause more stress.

Emotional Effects

The emotional effects on patients' well-being are one of the negative effects of cosmetic surgery. While they go under the knife to fix a problem they see on the outside, this sometimes only serves as a bandage on the larger problem. After the surgery they continue to suffer from a body image distortion. A small number of patients continue to go back to the surgeon to fix other problems they see instead of trying to find a real solution to the problem.

Risks

Risks are a negative side effect of cosmetic surgery because they're dramatic and varying. Whenever an individual steps under the knife, they open themselves up to risks associated with the surgery. There are cases of individuals dying on the operating table, even during a routine procedure. The individual also has to worry about risks associated with an infections, allergic reactions and organ failure. These only occur in a small number of cases, but they are still something to consider.

Scarring

Scarring is something that many people don't consider when it comes to cosmetic surgery. However, in certain cases this type of surgery can leave behind lasting scars that don't fade over time. Breast augmentation and liposuction are two of the more popular procedures that cause scarring. The surgeon can later attempt to correct the scarring or reduce the appearance, but this doesn't always work.

Cure Major Panic Attacks

The person is likely to dread a further panic attack.

A major panic attack can seem to come out of the blue, and be terrifying for the person who is experiencing it. The heart beats fast and loud, the person can feel faint and experience a host of other physical symptoms, including sweating and faintness. The psychological feelings can be even more distressing. The sufferer feels acute fear and has an unpleasant sense of impending doom. If a panic attack strikes suddenly, the situation is made worse by the sufferer not knowing what is happening to her.

Instructions

Assessment

1. Medication may help in the short term.

Visit the physician and explain your symptoms. Give the doctor a history of any traumatic events leading up to the first panic attack. The doctor will examine you and exclude any physical problems. Ask for a referral to a cognitive behavioral therapist. Your doctor may prescribe some short-term medication to help with the immediate symptoms.

2. Explore your symptoms in a controlled environment with the therapist. Cooperate with any exercises the therapist asks you to do. These may include keeping a diary, or rating your symptoms on a 1 to 10 scale. The therapist will probably ask you to visit for several sessions. Learn techniques that will help you to deal with the panic attacks. You will learn ways of facing the panic, rather than trying to escape from it.

3. Learn other coping mechanisms. These might include yoga, meditation and simple relaxation techniques. Using relaxation tapes and music, spend a period of time every day practicing relaxation. Exercise several times a week, as this generally improves the mood and releases stress.

4. Develop a pattern of positive thinking. Look at your diet and coffee intake. Include fruit and vegetables and try to eat regularly. Limit caffeine and alcohol intake. Try to establish a regular sleep pattern.

How Get Rid Of Ticks In Florida

Florida offers a warm climate, which ticks need to thrive. To rid yourself of these pests you will need to first understand the cycle and habit of a tick. The tick goes through four stages: egg, larva, nymph and adult. Many tick treatments only kill off the adult ticks, so diligence is required in removing all ticks from your home.

Instructions

1. Ticks like to live in tall grass.

Keep your yard mowed and landscaped. Ticks like to live in tall grass and wooded areas. When mowing your lawn, wear long pants, sleeves and boots to prevent ticks from burrowing in your skin. You must check yourself, children and your pets during the heavy infestation months, mainly May through October, for ticks that may have attached themselves to you.

2. When using a pesticide to rid your house and yard of ticks, be sure to treat your yard and your animals. Animals are the No. 1 cause of ticks entering the house and should be treated with a reliable treatment such as Frontline. Be sure to choose a treatment that will kill all stages of the tick's life cycle.

3. Hire an outside company who specializes in pest control. This option is good if you are unable to rid your house and yard of ticks and wish to have a professional do the job. The cost of hiring a professional in Florida depends on the area in which you live and the size of your lawn. Initial consultations will yield you an accurate quote.

Connect To Tty

TTY is a Tele Typewriter, a device used to accommodate those who have difficulty understanding speech over the telephone. The device uses text to communicate over the telephone lines. The TTY converts text messages into sounds that are transmitted over the line and then decoded back into text by a device at the other end. If only one party has a TTY; a relay service must be used.

Instructions

1. Plug one end of the phone cord into the TTY device and the other end into a phone jack. Turn the TTY on. Press and hold the "Ctrl" key and "Dial" key simultaneously. Dial the number and hit return. The TTY will indicate the status of the phone call by showing "ringing," "busy" or an erratic blink that indicates the line is connected. This method of connection is called Direct Connect.

2. Plug the telephone into the phone jack if you have an acoustic coupler. Turn on the TTY. Remove the handset and position it correctly on the acoustic coupler cups designed for this purpose. Usually, the ear portion of the handset is positioned in the right cup, while the speaking portion (the portion closest to the phone cord) of the headset is positioned to the left. The telephone should fit snugly into the acoustic couplers so as to prevent external noise. Dial the telephone in the usual manner. Watch the signal on the TTY screen. A steady blink indicates the phone is ringing. A rapid blink indicates the phone line is busy. An erratic blink indicates a connection.

3. Use a Relay Center if one of the parties does not have a TTY. The person with the TTY must first call the Relay Center by dialing 711 anywhere in the United States. The service is free, but the call will be charged long distance rates the same as a phone call made without the Relay Center. The TTY user provides the operator with the phone number of the call recipient. The operator calls the recipient and provides the name of the call initiator. The spoken responses of the recipient are typed back to the TTY user.

Prostate Abscess Cure

A prostate abscess is a collection of tissue or fluid most commonly caused by an infection or infectious organisms. Symptoms include urinary retention, frequency as well as pain. Most abscesses are discovered through prostate examinations, as the prostate normally enlarges in the event of an abscess. Treatment and cure for prostate abscesses may include a variety of methods.

Antibiotics

Many prostate abscesses may be treated through a course of antibiotics, which are highly effective in treating inflammation associated with an abscess. Common antibiotics include ampicillin, levofloxacin (Levaquin), fluoroquinolones, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazoe (Bactrim). Antibiotic treatments are often coupled with increased fluid intake, stool softeners, and analgesics for pain relief. Most antibiotic treatments are continued for 30 days. Antibiotics may be administered orally or through intravenous therapy.

Aspiration or Drainage

In severe cases, aspiration or drainage of a prostate abscess may be performed. In some cases, a man may require a temporary insertion of a Foley catheter to drain the bladder, as swelling or blockage of the urethra due to an abscess may make urination difficult. A transurethral drainage requires the threading of a tube through the urethra to the abscess to facilitate drainage. In some cases, surgical resection or surgery may be necessary.

Home Remedies

Time-honored home remedies to treat various issues of the prostate, including abscess, have been used by men around the world for hundreds of years. However, men are advised to discuss the effectiveness and wisdom of such home remedies with their urologist for use in conjunction or as a replacement to conservative or traditional medical treatments. In some cases, pumpkin seeds and tomatoes have been known to offer soothing remedies to a swollen or enlarged prostate. A mixture of juniper berries and parsley blended in a mixer with juice or water has also been known to provide a prostate gland cure, and effective remedy for prostate problems.

How Icp Monitors Work

Methods

One method is to use a sensor to monitor the cerebral spinal fluid pressure inside of the head. In this case, an epidural sensor is placed inside of the head, and positioned just above the epidural layer of the skull. This method is the least evasive, as it does not require the surgeon to drill all the way through the skull (reducing brain material exposure). The downside of this method is that cerebral spinal fluid cannot be drained to relieve pressure inside of the head of the patient (pressure can be monitored, but not reduced). Alternatively, a bolt is attached to the skull, allowing the sensor to record the subarachnoid level of the skull. This method allows for more accurate readings of cerebral spinal fluid pressure. To acquire an accurate measurement of intracranial pressure inside of the brain, insert a small tube, called an intraventricular catheter, into the frontal lobe area of the head (top right side of the head). In this method, insert the tube into a ventricle of the brain matter. The true difficulty, however, is when the head injury is so bad that the brain swells up around the ventricles, causing the ventricles to change shape. In this case, look for a ventricle that is not deformed, so that you can slip the threaded tubing of the catheter into the pore carefully.

Setting up the ICP Monitor

(Do not use this material for medical purposes. This is only an overview for setting up the ICP monitor.) Use the plastic tube (catheter) and bedside monitor to take readings of cerebral spinal fluid pressure encompassing the brain of the patient (analog signals are transmitted through a cable to the ICP monitor). Zero out the indicator/monitor, cable and catheter by holding down the zero button until the indictor reads 0 mmHg. Ensure that the bedside monitor connected by the cable also reads the same (if not, then zero out the bedside monitor (see manufacturer's instructions for the particular monitor). Use the monitor calibration button on the face of the ICP device to reset the host bedside monitor. Zero out the device in normal (ambient) light only. Place the cable and catheter into the fiber optic connector. The cable is what transmits signals from the pressure readings taken by the catheter.

When to Get ICP Monitoring

Find out whether or not you need to have ICP (intracranial pressure) monitoring performed on you or someone you know. Consult your physician. If you had a stroke, ask your physician if the stroke was considerably bad enough to justify an operation. A common cause for ICP monitoring is head injury. If the brain is suspected of hemorrhaging, then give the doctor permission to perform the operation (hemorrhaging leads to further damage to the brain). Sign the form of consent. You will be given anesthesia to dull the body's pain receptors prior to the operation.

Herbal Solutions For Joint Pain

Joint pain can range to mild discomfort to crippling stiffness. It can be an inconvenience or even life altering. There are several conventional therapies available that can be effective in easing joint pain. However, there are several herbal options that can provide relief from joint pain.

Ginger

In terms of joint pain ginger can work as an anti-inflammatory. Ginger can slow the production of prostaglandis and leukotrienes both responsible for swelling and pain. By adding ginger to your food or drinking ginger tea, you have a perfect remedy for joint pain relief and the swelling that often accompanies it.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is beneficial in relieving joint pain. One of the main causes for joint pain is mineral deficiency in the body. Apple cider vinegar is rich in magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and calcium all of which are essential for the body. Someone who suffers from arthritis and is deficient in these essential nutrients may have an increase in joint pain and inflammation.

Sonicare Advance Toothbrush Troubleshooting

Sonicare Advance toothbrushes are battery-powered toothbrushes that are good for the reduction of plaque, especially around braces and brackets. The Sonicare Advance is safe on gums and the soft tissues in the mouth and is can increase saliva, which aids in the fight against tooth decay and infections. If you have a Sonicare Advance that isn't working the way that it should, it may be able to be fixed.

No Power

If the toothbrush doesn't work when you press the power button, it is more than likely just out of battery. To fix the problem, leave the toothbrush sitting on the charger overnight. If it doesn't seem to be charging, check the outlet the toothbrush is plugged into by plugging in another appliance. If you have checked the outlet and plugged the toothbrush in for several hours and it still doesn't work, it is defective and will need to be replaced.

Toothbrush is Losing Power

If your Sonicare Advance seems less powerful than it used to, it could be due to a variety of reasons. First, try recharging your toothbrush. It may simply be running low on battery power. If the "Easy-start" feature is turned on, turn it off. "Easy-start" can drain power from the unit. If it is still sluggish, clean or replace the head of your toothbrush. If none of this works, you can contact Sonicare on their website. They will do everything they can to help you get your Sonicare Advance working.

Blinking and Beeping

If your toothbrush won't stop blinking or beeps when you turn it off, it needs recharged. Sonicare Advance's are equipped with different recharge indicators. The first is an indicator light that will blink when the brush needs charged. It will continue to blink until the brush gets charged. There is no turn off.

The second indicator is a sound signal. With the Advance, it is five quick beeps that will sound each time the brush is turned off. It will beep only when three or fewer brushings remain before a recharge is needed.

Stinky Toothbrush

If your Sonicare Advance has started to smell bad, you will need to clean it or replace the head. Heads are supposed to be replaced every three months, whether they look worn or not. Once a week, your Advance should be cleaned by removing the brush head, unscrewing the pieces that fixes the head to the handle and wiping away residue found there with a paper towel. Particles and germs can get trapped inside and lead to odor.

Alternative Treatment For Fibrocystic Breast

Fibrocystic breasts are marked by round or oval lumps in the breast tissue, with texture varying from soft to very firm. These lumps tend to be rubbery and move freely under the skin. They are due to overproduction of estrogen or insufficient production of progesterone, the two main female hormones. Herbal remedies help inhibit excess estrogen production and estrogen sensitivity.

Although most herbal medicines are safe and non-toxic, consult with your doctor about any supplements you are taking, especially if standard hormonal therapies are taken for this condition. The following herbal medicines are safe to use with these treatments. In order for these supplements to be effective, they must be taken through several menstrual cycles before achieving full benefit, so consistent use is important.

Dioscorea, also known as wild yam, relieves pain and swelling. Take 20 drops of tincture in ¼ cup three times daily after meals. Ginger is an effective pain reliever and halts production of hormones that cause swelling. Prepare ginger tea by adding 1/3 tbsp. of powdered ginger to 1 cup of water and drink as often as desired. Green tea prevents existing cysts from becoming larger and new ones from forming. Take 240 mg of catechin extract three times daily or drink as tea two or three times a day. Kelp assists in keeping bowel movements regular by reducing the amount of estrogen that is reabsorbed from the stool. Kudzu and soy isoflavone concentrate both keep estrogen from activating cysts. Take 10 mg of kudzu three times a day or take 3,000 mg of soy isoflavone daily; you do not need to take both. Soy isoflavone may cause upset stomach; if this occurs, take kudzu. Vitex has a long history of traditional use regulating female hormones, and balances estrogen and progesterone production as well as inhibits excess testosterone production. Take 1/2 tsp. in 1/4 cup of water three times a day.

Women with this fibrocycstic breasts must avoid herbs that stimulate estrogen production, including cordyceps, dan shen, fennel seed, licorice and peony.

Traditional Chinese Formulas

Augmented Rambling Powder can lower estrogen levels and is useful if excess estrogen causes dry mouth, blurry vision, pressure sensation in the lower abdomen, difficulty urinating and increased menstrual flow. Two Cured Decoction lowers estrogen production. These Chinese formulas help manage the fibrocystic breast condition.

Do not use Augmented Rambling Powder if trying to become pregnant. Avoid Two Cured Decoction if fever is present.

Other Suggestions

Estrogen is produced by body fat; thus, excess body fat produces excess estrogen. Follow a diet low in fat but high in good fats like omega 3 fatty acids found in cold water fish, and flaxseed oil. These fats stop the production of hormones that are known to cause pain and inflammation. Eat a minimum of 20 g of fiber daily to keep bowels regular and flush out excess estrogen through the stool rather than it being reabsorbed by the body. Avoid taking birth control pills as these can aggravate the condition, or ask your doctor about the low dose forms that are available.

Homemade Antibiotic Cream

Homemade remedies can bring relief inexpensively. No additives and the use of ingredients purchased from trusted and local sources make these remedies part of a "green" lifestyle. Antibiotic herbs and essential oils can be located in reference books like Maggie Tisserand's "The Magic and Power of Lavender" or Marcel Lavabre's "Aromatherapy Workbook."

Base Ingredients

Homemade creams are created using beeswax, lanolin and olive oil (or other vegetable oils like avocado, almond or jojoba) as a base. Beeswax and lanolin can be found in health food stores. For a basic recipe, use two drams of beeswax, one-half ounce of lanolin, one and one-half ounces of olive or other vegetable oil, and heat together over a low flame.

Beeswax may be a problem for those with pollen allergies because it can contain traces of pollen. To create a cream without beeswax, purchase a premade, fragrance-free cream base from a cosmetic supplier or use an unscented thick lotion or cream from a local retailer. Body butter bases are another alternative. Premade bases may have preservatives in them to extend their shelf-life.

Antibiotic Ingredients

Choose a single essential oil or herb that has antibiotic properties to add to the cream. Lavender has a long history as an antibiotic and general healing herb. Lavender is also an easily found plant, sold as an herb and an essential oil. In a separate pot, bring to a boil one and one-half ounces of distilled water and pour the boiling water over a tablespoon of lavender flowers. Strain the mixture and add the liquid to the heated oil base; stir to blend. Add twenty drops of lavender essential oil only when the mixture begins to stiffen.

Consider purchasing lavender or other herbs and oils from local growers and makers. Tea tree, lemon and sandalwood have antibiotic properties too, if lavender is not satisfactory or to your liking.

Storing Creams

Use small plastic or glass jars with lids to store the cream. These jars can be found at craft stores or they can be purchased in large quantities through bottle suppliers. You can use recycled jars by sterilizing them in the dishwasher or by hand, using hot water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly and air-dry before filling with homemade antibiotic cream. Make only small amounts of the homemade antibiotic cream and use it within several weeks or a month, to avoid the vegetable oil from becoming rancid.

Homemade Detox Bath

Hydrotherapy is the use of water for treating ailments or disease. Using this method, the body is able to recuperate and heal itself. The process in which the body rids itself of unwanted waste matter is called detoxification. The body's reaction to heat and water pressure can be very instrumental in stimulating the immune system, reducing stress hormones, encouraging circulation and digestion and lessening muscular spasms. Using inexpensive ingredients, you can detoxify at home.

Basic Epsom Salt Detox Bath

Epsom salt is composed of sulfate and magnesium. Both of these ingredients help rid the body of toxins. Sulfate helps eliminate food and environmental chemicals, along with reducing levels of hormones such as estrogen. Magnesium, sometimes an overlooked mineral, is needed for cellular energy and cellular cleansing. Magnesium depletion can be caused by stress, processed food or a diet rich in fat and sugar. Add one or two cups of Epsom salt to tub of hot water. However, don't make it too hot if you're prone to heart problems, have high or low blood pressure or are diabetic. Soak for at least 15 to 20 minutes and be prepared to perspire profusely while you rid yourself of toxins. Afterward, you should rest for three hours or all night and make sure you are thoroughly covered. While you sleep, you'll also be eliminating toxins. It's important to drink plenty of water afterward to replace fluid lost from perspiration. Additionally, the sulfate absorbed into your skin will help you to eliminate more toxins and help you feel great.

Bentonite and Bladderwrack Detox Bath

Uncle Harry's Detox Bath consists of Bentonite clay, a substance known for extracting negative toxins from the body (such as heavy metals, pesticides and free radicals), sea salt and powdered Bladderwrack, sea kelp rich in iron. These three ingredients form a powerful detoxification bath for the body. Add one cup of the detox powder to a tub full of water and you will see the electromagnetic properties in action. The particles will expand into surfaces, allowing them to pick up large quantities and different types of toxins. The "negative" charge from the Bentonite clay, in particular, acts like magnet to many of these "positive" charged toxins, absorbing them into the rough surface of the clay. Soon, you'll begin to perspire. Soak for 15 to 20 minutes. For a deeper effect, wrap a towel around your head and torso and sit on the side of the tub while immersing your legs in the water. This will increase perspiration and speed up the elimination of the toxins. If you have heart problems or high blood pressure, make sure to use warm water instead of hot.

Bulimia Dangers

Bulimia Dangers

All eating disorders are dangerous, but the serious consequences of bulimia nervosa, which doesn't always get as much attention as starvation or dramatic overeating, aren't always understood. Also misunderstood is the diversity among bulimics; while most are women, men account for about 10 percent of those with the disorder. If you are bulimic or are considering purging, take time to understand the potentially devastating effects of the disease.

Dehydration

Vomiting and the use of laxatives, the most common methods of purging, prevent the body from retaining the necessary amount of liquids. This kind of serious dehydration causes short-term effects such as dizziness and weakness, but it also can lead to more serious long-term problems, including kidney failure, heart failure, brain damage and death.

Malnutrition

Bulimics are known for binging and purging, but they can also go through periods of intense undereating. Both undereating and overeating cause malnutrition, which can bring about severe respiratory infections, heart attack and even blindness.

Reflux

Esophageal and acid reflux disorders are caused by excessive vomiting. When someone regurgitates partially digested foods from the stomach back into the esophagus, the acid and enzymes can cause damage, which can lead to cancer of the esophagus and voice box.

Tooth Decay

Vomiting-related stomach acid also causes tooth erosion. Approximately 89 percent of people with bulimia show signs of tooth decay, according to the National Eating Disorders Association.

Infertility

Women sometimes experience the loss of a regular menstrual cycle. Full-term pregnancy can become impossible due to malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies.

Depression

Typically done in secret, bulimia carries with it feelings of shame. Anxiety and depression can lead to a binging and purging episode, but this behavior also can lead to depression, continuing the cycle.

Diet For Acne Treatment

Consuming water can help to clear up acne.

For years, most scientists said that there was no link between diet and acne. Recent studies in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology seem to indicate that there is a link between acne and nutrition after all. With this in mind, here are some tips to help control your acne through dietary changes.

Lay Off the Caffeine

Acne is a result of hormone-triggered overproduction of oil in the sebaceous glands of the skin. Sometimes, these hormones can be set off by stress. That's why teens have a tendency to get pimples before a big event such as class picture day or a big date. Since consuming too much caffeine can add stress, cutting caffeine from the diet -- including large frothy lattes or giant bottles of soda -- can help reduce pimples.

Avoid Processed Foods

Natural health practitioners, including naturopathic physicians, herbal practitioners and practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine have all maintained that acne can be the result of undigested toxins in the body leeching out through the skin. Many of these undigested toxins come from highly-processed foods. To help control acne, some naturopathic physicians maintain that a person should eat more whole foods, including raw vegetables, whole grain starches and fruits, and avoid junk food such as refined sugars and starches.

Water

Although doctors have always said that a person should drink from six to eight glasses of water daily, many people barely drink a fraction of this. Water acts as a natural flushing agent in the body. Water helps to regulate hormones by diluting them, while it also works as a natural cleanser to flush impurities from the body. Water also helps to process the food you eat, so drinking extra water will help your body to process more impurities and remove them so that they do not show up in the form of acne.

How Does Smoking Cause Cancer

How Prevalent Is Smoking-Related Cancer?

Cancer caused by smoking is one of the largest health issues in the United States. Nearly 200,000 people in the United States each year are diagnosed with lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, 87 percent of the lung cancer deaths in the United States are caused by smoking.

Lung cancer is not the only cancer that is caused by long-term smoking. Over 150,000 people die in the United States each year from cancers that are directly caused by smoking. Even light smoking of only 1 to 4 cigarettes a day can put you at a much greater risk for developing smoking-related cancers, heart disease and a host of other ailments.

Why Does Smoking Cause Cancer?

Smoking causes cancer because of the chemicals and additives in the smoke and tar. Tar, not nicotine, is the cancer-causing agent in cigarette smoke. Tar is made up of over 4,000 chemicals, 60 of which are known to cause cancer.

Some of the chemicals found in cigarette smoke may amaze you. Chemicals such as cyanide, benzene, ammonia and formaldehyde are in the tar of cigarettes and are let loose in your body by the smoking of cigarettes.

Smoking pipes and cigars are not safe alternatives to cigarettes, as they also contain many of the same cancer-causing chemicals. Also, smoking low-tar or light cigarettes does not lower your risk of getting cancer from smoking. Many of those who smoke light cigarettes either smoke more cigarettes per day, or smoke the cigarettes down closer to the butt.

What Types of Cancer Are Linked to Smoking?

Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer associated with smoking. However, cancer of the larynx, mouth, throat, bladder and esophagus are all very common forms of cancer that are directly caused by cigarette smoke. Also, cancers of the kidney, stomach, pancreas and even a form of leukemia are linked with, though not directly caused by, smoking.

Michael Thurmond Body Types

Thurmond assigns each body type a specific exercise plan.

Michael Thurmond's 6 Week Body Makeover is based on the idea that five different body types react differently to particular kinds of food and exercise. Thurmond and his theories have received much interest due to his connection with ABC's "Extreme Makeover." His body-typing ideas and "customized blueprinting technique" are not scientifically proven. However, according to DietMad.com, his makeover plans combine healthy eating and exercise so may be successful. Each body type is given a targeted exercise and diet plan with small meals spread throughout the day.

Body Type A: Endo-Morph

Endo-morph body types, according to Thurmond, have a circular shape and are susceptible to putting weight on easily, especially from simple carbohydrates like white bread and refined sugar. They also tend to store calories from sugar and fruits with a high sugar content, like pineapples and bananas, as fat.

Body Type B: Endo-Meso

Endo-meso body types are shaped like an upside-down triangle, with weight accumulating largely on the stomach, buttocks, thighs and hips. People with this body type, Thurmond thinks, have a slow metabolism and need to eat the right kinds of carbohydrates and proteins to lose weight.

Body Type C: Meso-Endo

Meso-endo body types are more regular in shape, with hips and shoulders of a similar width, giving the body a rectangular appearance. Thurmond allows these dieters more calories as he thinks they have a higher metabolism than most.

Body Type D: Endo-Ecto

Endo-ecto body types tend to have a disproportionately large chest area compared with their shoulders and lower body, giving the overall shape of an oval. Thurmond emphasizes weight training for these body types because they have low muscle mass; in working to gain more, they will increase their metabolism since people with bigger muscles use more calories. Their diet plan is also designed to reflect a muscle-building emphasis.

Body Type E: Ecto-Endo

Ecto-endo body types have a tube-like appearance due to a skinny frame beneath their excess body fat. Thurmond thinks people in this category can eat more carbohydrates than others, but these carbohydrates are coupled with protein to slow down the digestive process.

Considerations for All Body Types

All Thurmond's diet plans eliminate dairy products so low calcium levels may become an issue, particularly for women with osteoporosis, says DietMad.com, which also calls the diet "expensive and time-consuming." EveryDiet.com points out all of the plans eliminate not only dairy, but all processed foods and condiments like mustard and ketchup due to their high sugar and salt content. Virtual Fitness Trainer says Thurmond's plans are too restrictive, banning sugars, fats and caffeine, making the diet too boring for many people. Committed followers will lose weight, according to this website, but risk putting it back on when they eat normally.

How Does Smoking Affect Others

Secondhand Smoke Causes Cancer

Secondhand smoke has been classified as a known human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In fact, of the 4,000 chemicals found in cigarettes, 60 of them are known cancer agents. If you are a smoker, consider the fact that your habit is harmful to those around you and it is not just hurting your body.

Secondhand Smoke Affects Little Children

Secondhand smoke is known to cause lower respiratory infections in children and infants. A portion of these children even end up in the hospital due to the illness. Children living with a parent who smokes are also more likely to have problems with asthma. Finally, children in a smoking home can get fluid build up in their ears from the smoke. If you take your child to the pediatrician, one of the first questions they ask you is "Does anyone in your house smoke?" This question is asked for a reason.

Secondhand Smoke Affects Pregnant Women

Smoke has been known to cause low birth-weight babies. This is true if the mother smokes or if the mother lives with people who do. Newborns also become at risk for sudden infant death syndrome when they have parents in the house who smoke.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Soy Candles

Bright glow of a candle

The aroma of a warm, scented candle can light up any room and create a welcome atmosphere of tranquility. Soy candles are an excellent choice because of their longer burn times and cost effectiveness. Most importantly, using soy candles offers a few health benefits.

No Soot

Traditional candles produce soot

Soot is produced by traditional wax candles when carcinogens are released as the candle burns. Soy candles are all-natural and do not emit carcinogens or soot.

No Chemicals

The Environmental Protection Agency has identified benzene and toluene, two cancer-causing agents, as being present in paraffin. Soy candles do not contain benzene and toluene.

Uses

Soy is a product that is found in many lotions, soaps and hair care products, according to Caterpillar's Candles. Soy is safe for your skin, and soy candles are safe to touch, because they are a natural product.

Environment

Farm life helps the environment

If wax candles were replaced with soy candles, candle producers would utilize over 60 million pounds of soybeans annually, according to data from Caterpillar's Candles. The reduced greenhouse emissions that would result could greatly enhance air quality and aid those with breathing problems.

Allergens

Because wax candles are produced with oil byproducts, their fumes may irritate those with allergies. Candles-4-U notes that soy candles are less likely to give users an allergic reaction.

Acrophobia Cures

Acrophobia is a fear of heights. The definition of "heights" varies among individuals with this fear. Acrophobia can be a debilitating and overwhelming phobia. This label is applied to a person who panics when in elevated areas.

Therapeutic Treatments

Cognitive behavioral therapy exposes individuals to the source of fear. The two types of treatments utilized with this therapy are gradual exposure (systematic desensitizing) and immediate exposure (flooding). Behavioral modification techniques are taught for preventing the onset of panic attacks and regaining bodily control. Exposure therapy and virtual reality exposure (three dimensional virtual computer images) effectively help to treat individuals with this phobia. Therapists teach confidence boosting behavioral skills, and relaxation techniques to implement in real situations. Hypnotherapy is a method that teaches individuals remove themselves from the situation with panicking.

Prescribed Medications

Medications, such as tranquilizers and antidepressants, are prescribed to control symptoms. This type of treatment increases the possibility of individual addiction. D-cycloserine (DCS), normally used for tuberculosis treatment, has effectively helped people with acrophobia. Its ingredients have been proven to positively affect the amygdala region of the brain, which regulates fear. Medication alone is not a viable treatment. It should be administered along with therapy for maximum effectiveness.

Homeopathic Treatments

Natural remedies are also available to control symptoms of acrophobia. Homeopathic ingredients, such as Cocculus indicus, Gelsemium and Bryonia, control symptoms of dizziness, disorientation and nausea. The calming properties of lemon balm, lavender and passion flower help to balance emotional distress. Herbal supplements help maintain our nervous systems, making it possible to maintain positivity.

What Is A Diagnostic Assessment

Diagnostic assessment enables researchers or scientists to make discoveries through the use of scientific method or equipment depending on the circumstance of the particular situation. Such discoveries require actions to either cure or remedy the situation. Following is a discussion of diagnostic assessment and its application within the medical field.

Definition of Diagnostic Assessment

Diagnostic assessment deals with the process of evaluation, with the aim of defining a problem and taking the required action to resolve the problem. Diagnostic assessment involves a process of documentation which enables the researcher or evaluator to define a problem. This process is a form of inquiry technique used in problem-solving. One could not solve a problem without first defining the problem, and its degree and magnitude.

Kinds of Diagnostic Assessment

Diagnostic assessment can happen in various disciplines. For instance within the field of health, diagnostic assessment enables doctors to see their patients' health problems through a careful analysis of the patients' internal and external conditions. Within an educational setting, diagnostic assessment is used to document in measurable terms, skills, attitudes, beliefs or knowledge. Such assessment could focus on individuals or it may focus on the larger learning community, such as a school.

Use in the Field of Medicine

Most often hospitals and medical centers around the United States receive patients who are unconscious and suffering from a serious health problem. The job of doctors and nurses is to first figure out the nature of the sickness. If patients are able to speak, some may help the process of their diagnostic assessment move forward faster by informing doctors where they are having problems. Assuming that patients were able to inform doctors they were having a serious chest pain or inflammation, doctors have been provided some vital information which could help them conduct a diagnostic assessment.

Performing a Diagnostic Assessment

The next step for doctors in their effort to analyze patients' problems is to perform a diagnostic assessment of the heart and chest region. Often doctors would use MRI equipment to perform a heart and chest analysis. This sophisticated equipment is able to project the heart onto a computer screen through the use of special computer software programs. Upon such diagnostic evaluation, the heart condition is determined and documented through a vision and audio analysis.

Action Resulting From Diagnostic Assessment

After a diagnostic assessment is performed, the attending doctors would analyze their imaging of the chest and heart region, When doctors determine through the scanned images that a heart artery is narrowing for instance, and causing some blockage for blood flow to the heart, they would recommend a corrective measure. The treatment is the resulting action of the diagnostic assessment in this case. The treatment may be seen as the end result of the performed diagnostic assessment.

Tropical Asian Decorating Ideas

Thailand

Tropical Asian design should bring a feeling of the lush flora and rich culture of places like Thailand and Bali into your home. With the use of natural fibers and warm wood furnishings you can create a relaxing environment that will transport you to another place and time. Here's how.

Bedroom

A tropical Asian bedroom should be a relaxing serene environment. Start with sage green or soft yellow walls and cover wood floors with a small area rug made from natural fibers. Top it off with a heavy bed frame made from bamboo.

Dress the bed in light blue or light green linens with a traditional tropical Asian design such as a crane or ocean motif. For an additional tropical feature, hang a decorative mosquito netting hoop over the bed and drape the netting behind the headboard to transport you to your favorite hut in Bali.

Hang a bamboo-framed mirror over a light-colored or rattan bureau, and dress windows in light-colored sheers to make the most of the light. Place large leafy green plants in corners with up-lights to maximize the tropical look. A small fountain by the entryway to the room will complete the Asian influence.

Living Room

The living room will use classic Asian motifs in furniture style and color. Cherry woods with traditional Asian carvings create a warm living space and functional storage. Select a reproduction medicine chest as a focal point and to hold a flat-screen television. Place a low cypress table in front of a sleek-lined sofa with an area rug with a tropical motif such as a large palm leaf. Sprinkle tropical Asian-styled throw pillows throughout the room to tie it all together.

A traditional calligraphy table works well in front of windows to hold plants, a Buddha or other Asian-inspired figurines. Again, place large leafy plants such as palm trees or elephant ear plants around the room to add to the tropical appeal.

Kitchen

Light-colored wood and neutral paint colors set the tone for a calm kitchen environment, which can be layered with tropical Asian elements. Dress windows with bamboo shades to soften incoming light, and place natural wood accessories and woven baskets on countertops to hold teas and spices. Bookshelves can hold Buddhas or green jade elephants along with tea pots with traditional Asian design. A well-kept bonsai tree is a focal point for a dining table or near a windowsill. Add some chimes outside the kitchen window to create an island atmosphere when the wind blows.

Tropical Asian wall scrolls can dress up empty space near a kitchen table or between doorways to complete the look.

Deal With Abdominal Pain

The abdomen is the body part between the chest and the pelvis. Abdominal pain can be caused by many conditions, including gastroenteritis, appendicitis, urinary tract infection and lactose intolerance. Learn to identify the symptoms and to prevent abdominal pain from becoming a serious health threat.

Instructions

1. Check for the location of the pain and whether the abdomen is swollen. Observe whether the victim has any other symptom such as vomiting, fever, diarrhea and difficulty swallowing.

2. Call 911 immediately if the pain is persistent and severe. Spreading of pain to the patient's back, neck or arm is a sign of a cardiovascular problem. If the victim is pregnant, abdominal pain may indicate a pregnancy complication.

3. Let the victim lie down comfortably. Apply heat to the abdomen to relieve pain. If the victim faints, check the victim's airway, breathing and circulation, and perform CPR if necessary.

4. You can ask the victim about where the pain is, when it started, and whether the pain is sharp or dull. This information will help the emergency team to diagnose the victim.

5. If you have not consulted with doctor, do not give any food, drink or medication to the victim under any circumstance.

How Does Medicare Part D Work

What is Medicare Part D?

Medicare Part D is a prescription drug insurance plan that provides beneficiaries with prescription drug benefits, such as discounted medicine and durable medical equipment. To receive prescription benefits the plan holder must pay a monthly premium and/or deductible to ensure continued coverage. Failure to pay results in an interruption of coverage. Prescription costs vary by plan, but provide comparable discounts and prescription options to other employer and union insurance plans. Not every plan will cover the same drugs, so each applicant must search current medications for coverage under the Medicare Part D plan available to him.

Plan Tiers

Medicare Part D uses a tier-based system to determine pricing and eligibility for prescription drugs. Each tier, or group, is priced at a determined price bracket and/or co-payment assignment. The co-payment assigned for each tier fluctuates depending on the income level of the beneficiary, as well as the plan type. All plans cover both brand name and generic prescription drugs and are accepted at most pharmacies. The plan is set up to help people with high prescription costs, to reduce sickness and promote health.

Provides Protection

Medicare Part D works to prevent an unexpected rise in prescription costs and to provide protection to those who are qualified (persons 65 years of age or older) as well as protect those who qualify but have a limited source of income. This type of additional assistance is done on a case by case basis and, in the event that an applicant is approved, Medicare pays for almost all of his prescription costs.

Options

Medicare Part D was designed to offer beneficiaries more prescription drug options. According to Medicare, Medicare Part D plans must cover all or substantially all drugs in six categories: antidepressants, antipsychotics, anti-consulvants, anti-retrovirals (AIDS treatment), immune-suppressants and anti-cancer. Each plan type within the Part D network details the prescription drugs that are eligible for coverage. To determine if your prescription drugs are covered visit the Medicare website and use the "Formulary (Drug) Finder," or "Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Finder" resource features (see Resources). Both are available for persons with Medicare insurance or those reaching the eligibility age (65) and want to learn plan options and research those drugs that are covered under each plan. The features link to the Medicare database and provide current information by state, brand name and plan type.

Description Of Adhd

Most people have heard the term ADHD but few really know what it is beyond a general image of young boys acting up. ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, a condition that affects approximately 3 percent to 7 percent of the population.

ADHD vs. ADD

People are often confused about the difference between ADHD and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Some use ADHD to refer to the subtype of ADHD that includes hyperactivity and ADD to refer to the subtype that is primarily inattentiveness. The only medical term is ADHD, as this is the term used and defined by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM).

Subtypes of ADHD

There are three subtypes identified by the APA: predominantly inattentive type, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type, and combined type. As such, predominantly inattentive will have inattentive symptoms but not hyperactive or impulsive symptoms. The reverse is true for those with predominately hyperactive-impulsive type, while the combined type have both.

Inattentive Symptoms

Symptoms that indicate inattention include not being detail oriented, has trouble keeping on task, does not appear to listen, has trouble following directions and completing homework or tasks, unorganized, often loses items, easily distracted and forgetful.

Hyperactive-Impulsive Symptoms

Symptoms that indicate hyperactivity include fidgeting, has trouble remaining seated, talking excessively, always on the go, and has difficulty playing quietly. Impulsive symptoms include blurting out answers, has trouble waiting patiently, and interrupting others.

Normal Levels vs. Disruptive Levels

Everyone exhibits symptoms of ADHD, but that does not mean they have ADHD. To be diagnosed with ADHD, the symptoms must be present for at least six months and at a level that is both disruptive and inappropriate for the person's developmental level.

How Chiropractic Care Works

How Chiropractic Care Works

The Basics

A chiropractor is a person who specializes in diagnosing and treating joint-related issues. The chiropractic profession is founded on the belief that a number of health problems arise because a person's vertebrae are not in proper alignment. Chiropractors work to realign these vertebrae. The chiropractic profession also examines the relationship between these unaligned vertebrae and a person's central nervous system.

The Procedure

A chiropractor will use his or her hands to "adjust" a person's spine and extremities. They look for signs of stress and weakness in a person's body that may be impairing their movement or otherwise causing pain and massage those areas. After that, the natural healing process of the body takes care of the rest. The main form of hand treatment a chiropractor uses is referred to as an adjustment or a manipulation.

Pain Relief

Chiropractic care claims to be able to cure a number of types of body pain. Among them are headaches and migraines (as well as a number of other types of head-related pains), neck- and back-related pains, and abdominal pains. A chiropractor also may be able to relieve pain in a person's extremities, namely in the shoulders, arms, hands, legs, knees and feet.

Effectiveness

Opinions differ greatly about the overall level of effectiveness that chiropractic care has. While the ultimate goal is to realign vertebrae in damaged parts of the body to improve a person's overall movement (which will reduce pain in these areas), chiropractic care relies heavily on what your body is already doing to get you better. Back pain, for example, often goes away over the course of a few weeks. However, seeing a chiropractor may result in a more comfortable wait as the back heals on its own. Chiropractic care does not claim to help muscles or organs, but it does help the central nervous system by relieving pain.

Manage Albinism

Over the years, albinism has gotten more attention through Hollywood movies such as "Powder," "The Matrix" and "The DaVinci Code." This has upset many of those who have the condition, since the movies don't accurately portray it, and, in most cases, insult people who really have to live with it. Albinism is, in fact, a group of genetic conditions that cause a lack of pigment. It can affect only the eyes, which is known as ocular albinism, or both the eyes and the skin, which is known as oculocutaneous albinism. Here are some basics on manage albinism.

Instructions

1. Wear sunglasses. This is a must for anyone who has ocular albinism, where eyes can appear anywhere from blue to slate gray, or reddish-pink for those with less pigmentation. Light sensitivity is a big concern for people who have ocular albinism.

2. Apply sunscreen when leaving the house. This is a must for anyone with oculocutaneous albinism. The lack of pigment causes the skin to easily burn, which can turn deadly as there is no protection against harmful UV rays.

3. Wear full body protection when at all possible. As with sunscreen, it is important to protect the skin when outdoors. Even if you are wearing sunscreen, you should also protect yourself by wearing full shirts and pants and even large hats.

4. Test for Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome (HPS) as early as you notice albinism. HPS is a rare type of albinism that causes a bleeding tendency and lung disease.

5. Allow someone with albinism to do everything that everyone else does, including sports and school.
