Open Your Chakra

There are different chakras that can be opened using a series of meditation and precise actions. Chakras refer to "force centers" in your physical body that transmit energy to different channels. You can open your root, throat, navel or sacral chakra using specific hand positions to channel positive energy and power.


A lot of people use this technique together with chants and the sounds of Sanskrit letters. While you can have someone help you open your chakra, doing it on your own is a good training for meditation and for enhancing your chakra's power.


Instructions


Root and Throat Chakra


1. Touch the tip of your index finger to the tip of your thumb and focus on your root chakra. The root chakra is located in between your anus and genitals.


2. Do this for at least seven to 10 breaths while chanting a long "LAM."








3. Move the fingers toward your palm, allowing them to cross without your thumbs, to start opening your throat chakra.


4. Touch the tips of your thumbs at the top of your hands while pulling them gently up. Your throat chakra is located at the bottom part of your throat.


5. Do another loud "LAM" for your chant.


Navel and Sacral Chakra


6. Place your hands right before your stomach area. Stretch out your hands and fingers away from you, keeping your thumbs crossed. Make sure your fingers remain straight while you concentrate your attention to your navel chakra. This is right at your back or spinal area and above your navel.


7. Chant a long "LAM" while keeping your concentration.








8. Position your hands on your lap, while keeping your palms up and with your left hand on top of your right. Your thumbs must be touching it each other while you focus on your sacral chakra, near your lower back's sacral bone.


9. Chant out a loud "VAM."

Pancreas Cancer Diagnosis

Pancreatic cancer is also called exocrine cancer. The National Cancer Institute estimates that more than 42,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer will be diagnosed in the United States, and over 35,000 people will die from this disease annually, making it the fourth most common cause of cancer death. Early pancreatic cancer does not have symptoms, so it is usually diagnosed at a later stage, which makes it harder to control and treat.


Symptoms


As the disease progresses, symptoms include upper back pain, upper abdomen pain, nausea and vomiting, jaundice and weakness. Because these symptoms can be signs of other illnesses, it is important that they be checked out by a doctor.


Diagnosis


In order to make a correct diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, the doctor will do many tests. During the physical exam, she will examine the abdomen to check for any swelling or skin changes, and she will check for jaundice. Laboratory tests, CT scans, ultrasounds and biopsies may also be done. One of the most important lab tests is a CA 19-9. This is a tumor marker that is found to be high in up to 90 percent of those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Although this is not a test that can be used reliably as a general screening test, this tumor marker is helpful in measuring response to treatment in those already diagnosed. When a definitive diagnosis is reached, the cancer can then be staged. Staging the cancer is a process by which the doctor will assess the spread of the disease. The staging affects the kind of treatment that can be done.


Treatment


Those with pancreatic cancer are categorized in one of three groups: those with potentially resectable disease, or treatable by surgery; those with disease that is localized (in one area) but is unresectable and those with metastatic cancer. Surgery is often performed, and the pancreas may be partially or completely removed.


The Whipple procedure is done when the cancer is found in the widest part of the pancreas, called the head. The head of the pancreas is removed, along with part of the small intestine, stomach and bile duct. Depending on the surgeon, she might remove other tissues as well.


A distal pancreatectomy is when the surgeon removes the body and tail of the pancreas and also removes the spleen.


Removal of the entire pancreas, part of the small intestine, part of the stomach, the common bile duct, gallbladder, spleen and lymph nodes is called a total pancreatectomy.


Radiation and chemotherapy may also be used in some sort of combination with surgery.


Metastatic Disease


For patients whose cancer has metastasized, the median survival time is five to eight months. Chemotherapy is given to these people, but it does not significantly extend survival. In a quarter of these patients, a short-term clinical benefit is seen, but not in the long-term.








Future Directions


The treatments we have for pancreatic cancer are limited. Many oncologists urge their patients to participate in clinical trials to aid in new developments. Future possible treatments under study include biological therapies and targeted therapies.

Give Up Bubble Gum

This helps improve your breath and gives your mouth something to do without the chomping and sugar rush of bubble gum.


3. Observe other bubble gum chewers. Notice how unattractive they look constantly chewing bubble gum. See the sticky pink residue on their lips and chins from popping obnoxious bubbles. Vow to never be like that. Use the negative reinforcement of other bubble gum addicts to remind you of why you are trying to give up bubble gum.


4. Practice whistling. If you simply must pucker up and blow, try whistling a happy tune. While it could be annoying, it is more acceptable to your friends, family and coworkers than popping enormous bubbles all day long.

Snoring and sneezing go hand in hand. Snoring can develop if you are suffering from a cold or allergy flareup. Congestion limits airflow in the nose, forcing you to breathe through your mouth. Breathing through your mouth increases chances of snoring. Treating the cold or allergies can lessen snoring. If you use a decongestant nasal spray, do not use it for more than three days in a row as your body can become dependent on it. Try using saline spray and blowing your nose often.








Sleep Changes


Change your sleeping position to lay on your side. Heavy snorers will probably snore in any position, but light or moderate snorers generally just snore when lying on their back. Sew a pocket on the back of your pajamas and slip a tennis ball inside. When you try to roll onto your back, you will hit the tennis ball and unconsciously roll off your back.


You can elevate the head of your bed so that your torso and head are both elevated. Try putting a few bricks under the legs at the head of the bed. You can also reduce snoring by lessening the number of pillows you use. Pillows put a kink in your neck, which worsens snoring. Try using a memory foam pillow to support your neck at a natural angle and reduce snoring.

The Symptoms Of Getting A First Period

Having that first menstrual period can be both exciting and scary. It's a new chapter in a girl's life that will last for decades. Some girls have tell-tale symptoms before the onset of their first period whereas others don't.


When Does it Happen?


On average, about six months before a girl starts her menstrual period for the first time she may notice a clear vaginal discharge, which is normal. Menarche, or the beginning of the menstrual cycle, occurs about two years after a girl has started developing breasts (thelarche), according to Kidshealth.org and about four to six months after pubic and underarm hair has begun to grow.


Probably Not Much Blood


The first period will probably present with a small amount of blood, which will more than likely be discovered in the girl's underwear. It may be brown or red in color. Pads or tampons may be used.


Starting Early, Starting Late


The first menstrual period will most likely arrive between the ages of 9 and 16. The average age is 12 or 13. When it actually decides to start depends on a girl's race, weight, height and cultural background. If a girl starts at a very young age (prior to age 9 or 10) this is considered premature menarche. Leg or back aches and a slight headache may also occur. Prostaglandin is a substance that is released and causes the uterine muscles to contract and this is what causes cramping. A young girl may discover that right before the onset of her period she is more tired than she normally is and she may be crankier and perhaps more sensitive and emotional. Tears may flow. Physical Care


Bathing and caring for your patient's physical needs is essential. As the disease progresses, your patient will require more help. Be prepared by having the necessary equipment (bath bars, wheel chair, etc.).


Emotional Care


Be kind and speak gently to your patient. If he becomes aggressive, understand that aggression is a classic symptom of Alzheimer's. Never respond in anger or try to argue with your patient.


Learn about the Disease








Educate yourself about Alzheimer's so you will know what to expect as your patient digresses. There are resources available in your community such as the Alzheimer's Association. They will provide information that will help you take better care of your patient.


Ask Questions


Take your patient to her doctor often and ask about available treatments. Find out what works for other patients, and ask about any help that may be available to you as the caregiver.


Know your Limitations


Alzheimer's is a progressive and degenerative disease with no known cure. Expect the day to come when you will no longer be able to care for your patient. Above all, understand that you cannot take care of others unless you are caring for yourself.

What Is The Fat Flush Diet

Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., creator of the Fat Flush Diet, began revolutionizing weight loss in the early 1980s. Since the mid-1990s, people have been using her Fat Flush Diet, a blend of detox and diet, to clean their internal systems and lose weight quickly while increasing metabolism and energy levels. Phase 1


Phase 1 of the Fat Flush Diet restricts caloric intake to between 1,100 and 1,200 calories a day for a two-week period. Long Life Cocktail


Gittleman's book The Fat Flush Plan provides a detailed recipe of the Long Life Cocktail. Make the Long Life Cocktail by mixing 1 tsp. of either psyllium husk powder or flaxseed, 4 oz. cranberry juice (not cocktail), and 28 oz. distilled or spring water. During the other phases of the diet, this beverage replaces alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks. You will need two 32-ounce pitchers of this drink per day because you drink it instead of water in the first phase of the diet. Carry containers with you to work or other daily activities.


Phase 2


Increase your calorie intake to 1,200 to 1,500 in the second phase. Follow the Phase 2 plan until you reach your weight loss goal. Unlike the restrictive Phase 1, this phase lets you enjoy a variety of food, including two servings of healthy carbohydrates per day such as sprouted-grain toast, sweet potatoes, green peas, cooked carrots, butternut squash or acorn squash. You can drink spring water in place of the Long Life cocktail.


Phase 3


The Lifestyle Eating Plan is the maintenance phase of the Fat Flush Diet, which teaches you maintain lasting weight control. You can consume more than 1,500 calories per day and gradually reintroduce starchy carbohydrates, gluten-free grains and some low-fat dairy products. By this phase of the diet, you may notice increased energy and vitality.


Exercise


The Fat Flush Diet plan encourages participation in moderate exercise during all three phases. Lower Cholesterol Without Medication

High cholesterol is associated with elevated risk of cardiovascular diseases. The higher your cholesterol is, the more likely you might suffer from chest pain, heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular problems in the future. There are some ways to help lower your cholesterol level without worrying about the side effects of medications.


Instructions


1. Lose weight. If you are overweight or obese, losing weight will significantly reduce your cholesterol level. Studies show that a daily diet containing 15 g of soluble fiber or more can bring down the level of LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) by 10 percent.








3. Exercise regularly. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends moderate physical activity for 30 minutes every day, 5 days a week. You can either walk, run, bike or swim. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce a person's cholesterol level by 6 to 8 percent in 4 months.


4. Take multivitamins to supplement your diet. Regular consumption of multivitamins has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.


5. Set realistic goals by knowing your cholesterol levels. Ideally, your total cholesterol should be less than 200 mg/dL, with LDL less than 130 mg/dL and HDL higher than 40 mg/dL. You are at high risk for cardiovascular diseases if your total cholesterol is higher than 240 mg/dL, LDL higher than 160 mg/dL and HDL below 40 mg/dL.

5. Incorporate your children into your workouts. Do cardiovascular activities and strength workouts with your child in the stroller or while he or she watches a television show with singing and dancing.


6. Measure your portions. Most people don't know what a 1/2-cup of rice looks like or how much peanut butter fits in a tablespoon. Measure what you consume at home to help you keep your portions in check and to make estimating portions in restaurants easier.


7. Put leftovers into containers and avoid second helpings. If you make putting away leftovers easy and convenient, you're more likely to get them into the fridge than onto your plate.

7. Determine the rationality of your obsessions and compulsions. People who suffer from OCD know these things are not rational. This knowledge may not help you control the symptoms, however.

Symptoms Of Extreme Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is normally categorized in phases that run from mild obstructive sleep apnea to extreme sleep apnea. The symptoms of each phase are very similar but become much more noticeable with extreme sleep apnea.


Snoring


One of the more common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring. With extreme sleep apnea the snoring not only tends to be louder, it can also tell the story of how bad the apnea is. When someone has the condition they tend to stop breathing frequently during the night. In some more serious cases the person may stop breathing 100 or more times during the night. It is possible to hear the person stop breathing, as their snoring will suddenly stop when they are no longer breathing. Their snoring will return within a few seconds with the sounds associated with someone gasping for air.


Focus and Concentration


People with extreme sleep apnea do not get quality sleep at night. Their breathing patterns prevent them from getting the very deep sleep that's needed to recharge the body at night, so the person is always tired and has difficulty focusing on daily tasks. The degree to which a person feels tired is directly tied to the degree of apnea they suffer from. People with extreme sleep apnea have the potential to fall asleep during the day while doing anything from driving a car to sitting at a desk at work. Because they are always tired, these people find it difficult to concentrate on their jobs or other everyday tasks.


High Blood Pressure


Because a person with extreme sleep apnea is not getting quality sleep during the night, his blood is not able to get the amount of oxygen it needs to supply the internal organs. The frequent stops in breathing prevent the proper amount of oxygen from getting into the blood stream during sleep. Because the heart has to work harder to supply the body with oxygen, high blood pressure or hypertension can develop. As the internal organs send signals that they are low on oxygen, the heart will begin to work harder to pump more blood to get the organs the oxygen they need.


Naps Do Not Help


One of the symptoms that people sometimes overlook is the effect that naps have on people suffering with the condition. People with extreme sleep apnea will often find time to nap during the day, but even if they manage to fall asleep they won't be refreshed.


Breathing During Sleep


People with extreme sleep apnea will not only give the classic symptom of loud snoring, but they will also show very irregular breathing patterns when sleeping. It can sound as though the person is always trying to catch his breath, and he may make loud moaning sounds along with the snoring. The moaning is the body's attempt to bring in enough oxygen over the course of the night.

Juice Fast

A sample daily diet starts out with fresh fruits for breakfast, such as oranges, kiwis, apples and grapefruit. Fresh dates, dried raisins, lettuce, celery, grapes and pears are for lunch, followed a few hours later with a large glass of carrot juice for a snack. Dinner can be a large salad of carrots, cabbage, lettuce, cucumbers and peppers with a dressing made from tomatoes, avocado and olive oil. The salad can be topped with unsalted nuts and seeds. Ayurveda


Ayurveda is another common form of colon cleansing. Its roots stem back 5,000 years to a Vedic Indian medicine that uses an herbal solution to naturally rid the body of disease. The main concept in Ayurveda is that the body is governed by three major forms of energy that control the internal and external environments. These are known as movement, transformation and structure; in Sanskrit, they are called vata (wind), pitta (fire) and kapha (earth). Every person has a different amount of these three powers in their body. Thin, energetic and enthusiastic people have more vata. Individuals who have more of the pitta force are usually structured, goal-oriented and have a vigor for living. When kapha is predominant in a body, the person is more relaxed and nurturing.


Ayurvedic professionals recommend triphala, which consists of the three herbs haritaki, bibhitaki and amalaki, for colon cleansing. Each of these herbs has special characteristics that help remove bodily toxins, as well relieve conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome.


Prevention/Solution


It is best to detox your body on a daily basis throughout the year. This can be done by eating foods high in fiber, such as a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and unprocessed grains. Stay away from canned, high-sugar, high-fat and processed foods. Make sure you have the necessary vitamins and nutrients for your age, gender and lifestyle. Along with a proper diet, exercise is always an essential ingredient. At minimum, have 20 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week. Many people find that yoga is a valuable way to keep the mind and body free of contaminants and stress. Others practice a form of deep breathing or self-hypnosis. Sudden Weight Loss In Women

If a woman is suddenly losing weight for no apparent reason, this is cause for alarm. If you can absolutely rule out the obvious reasons for the weight loss such as strenuous dieting, anorexia nervosa (starvation) or taking amphetamines (diet pills, speed or cocaine), then you need to consider what else might be going on to cause weight loss. Are you depressed? Grief-stricken? Do you wear ill-fitting dentures that make it impossible for you to eat? Do you have a problem with alcohol and/or drugs? If none of those apply then there must be an underlying medical reason.


Considerations


The Mayo Clinic (see reference 1) explains that an inexplicable drop in weight can be due to cancer or other non-cancerous disorders; hyperthyroidism (over-active thyroid); liver disease; depression; or a malabsorption problem, which means that your body isn't absorbing nutrients properly. If an individual has lost up to 10 percent of his weight in the past six months, the Mayo Clinic recommends going to see a doctor.


Inflamed Bowels


Other conditions that can cause a person to lose weight quickly include inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, according to WrongDiagnosis.com (see reference 2). These diseases result in the immune system waging battle in the intestines.


Diabetes


Diabetes can cause sudden weight loss. When a diabetic's blood sugar is high, urination becomes frequent, which can cause dehydration and result in weight loss, according to MedicineNet.com (see reference 3). In addition, muscle breakdown can occur when a person's sugar is too high, causing weight loss. Unexplained and rapid weight loss in a diabetic should not be ignored. It isn't a good sign.








Additional Causes


Other illnesses that can cause sudden weight loss include diarrhea, particularly if it is chronic; laxatives, if over-used; thyroid medications; chemotherapy drugs; AIDS; a chronic infection; malnutrition; and problems with your teeth, such as having sores or wearing dentures or braces, according to the National Institutes of Health (see additional resources). Anorexia and Bulimia

Some anorexics simply stop eating, whereas others will use diuretics (water pills) and laxatives to help them lose weight. Extreme exercise may also be involved, as well as purposeful vomiting. Individuals suffering from this condition may also binge eat. Bulimia, on the other hand, occurs when an individual eats excessive amount of foods after which she feels guilty and may force herself to vomit or imposes very firm eating restrictions on herself. Exercises & Yoga Stretches For Lower Back Pain

Back pain can occur because the muscles around the spine, hips and thighs are tight, but it can also come about because those muscles are weak. Because of this complexity, in order to alleviate lower back pain, your strategy must consist of formal exercises and yoga stretches as well as moment-to-moment mindfulness about how you treat your back throughout the course of your day.


Formal Exercises


Begin on your hands and knees, wrists under your shoulders and knees under your hips. Then, as you inhale, lift your head and tail, and drop your belly. This action, spinal extension, will strengthen the back muscles and stretch out the front. To complement this with spinal flexion, when you exhale, curl your tailbone toward your pubic bone and your chin to your chest. Repeat 10 times and then try Locust Pose, a yoga backbend. Lie on your belly, with your forehead on the floor or on your forearms. Just as with spinal flexion, tuck your tailbone toward your pubic bone. Tone your belly muscles without hardening them. Lengthen your right leg behind you and then lift it as high as you can while keeping your hips on the floor. Hold for three breaths and return the leg to the floor. Repeat with the left leg. If this seems simple and you don't feel any pain, try lifting both legs at once.


Then, roll onto your back. Bend your knees and place your feet on the floor. Slide your hips to the right about 4 inches and place your knees to the left. This is a spinal twist. Stay here for several breaths and then repeat on the other side. After you're done, hug your knees into your chest and wrap your arms around your shins.


Finally, lie in Deep Relaxation Pose on your back with the legs extended and a blanket rolled up under your knees for five to 10 a day, so the muscles in your lower back can relax.


Day-to-Day Mindfulness


The most consistent exercise and yoga regimen will be unhelpful unless you become mindful of how you use your body in your daily life. Make sure that you have a pair of shoes that fit and that support the arches. If you're at a desk for 40 hours a week, put a small pillow or folded blanket under your pelvis. This will encourage your spine to lengthen and for your hip flexors to relax. Sit with your head, chest, knees and feet facing the same direction. If you need to turn, turn with your whole ribcage, not just with your neck.


Make it a habit to notice when you're slouching and to sit up straight instead. Every hour or so, find a corner in your office where you can do simple yoga exercises, such as twists or gentle standing backbends so you can reawaken your back. If you don't feel comfortable doing that in your office, at least get up and stretch your legs.








Lastly, make sure you have a supportive pillow for your neck and mattress for your back so that when you're sleeping and unable to be mindful, your body still has the reinforcement it needs.

Herbal Tea Recipe For Arthritis Treatment

Arthritis is an inflammatory condition of the joints. In addition to various prescription medications available to alleviate the painful symptoms, alternative medicinal remedies may prove helpful as well.


Drinking green tea or herbal medicinal teas with anti-inflammatory properties can soothe arthritis. Different people respond differently to certain teas, so experiment to find which one works for you. Remember that not all herbal medicinal teas are safe for everyone, especially pregnant women and those with ulcers, so read the warnings if you purchase packaged tea.


Ginger Tea


Ginger root contains compounds called gingerols that have anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger also helps with nausea; pregnant women are regularly advised to chew on ginger root candies.


Ginger tea, then, may help alleviate arthritic symptoms. Either buy a commercially prepared tea (loose or in a tea bag) or make your own. Crazy for Tea provides this recipe for loose tea:


1 cup chamomile leaves


1 cup alfalfa leaves


1/4 cup dried ginger root


3 tbsp. crushed willow bark


Combine ingredients. Keep the tea in a glass jar, away from light and heat.


Green Tea


According to WebMD, green tea has many health benefits because of its high levels of antioxidants. It is thought to help prevent cancer and heart disease, stave off diabetes and dementia, and lower cholesterol.








Green tea may also help arthritis. A University of Michigan Medical School study has shown that a compound in green tea, EGCG, helps reduce joint inflammation and swelling in arthritis sufferers. However, the study did not prove whether or not drinking green tea would have the same effect, nor how much of it one would have to drink.


It's worth downing a couple of cups a day to see if arthritis improves. Those who are sensitive to caffeine should purchase caffeine-free green tea. Green tea is available at most any grocery store.


Celery Seed and Devil's Claw


Spa Cuisine offers another delicious tea recipe for arthritis. Devil's claw, all the way from the Kalahari desert, and celery seed are the active anti-inflammatory herbs here. Author and integrative medicine pioneer Dr. Andrew Weil notes that devil's claw is widely used in Europe to treat arthritis. Finding devil's claw rhizomes may be difficult; usually just the supplements in pill form are sold.


The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that celery seed has been used since ancient times to treat arthritis; it's also a useful diuretic.


For 1 cup of tea:


1/2 to 1 tsp. dried rhizome of devil's claw, crushed


1 tsp. celery seed


1 cup boiling spring water


1. Boil the herbs in the spring water for 15 minutes. Strain.


2. Drink 2 cups per day for a month to determine if arthritis improves.


Do not use if pregnant, if you have an ulcer, or if you have low blood sugar.

Object Recognition Methods

Object recognition refers to the process by which computers and robotic devices identify and interpret visual cues in their environment. Different approaches have their strengths and weaknesses, but the goal is the same: to provide the computer or robotic device with the data it needs in order for the software to make an informed decision, or at least an educated guess based on a predetermined set of variables.


Computer Interpretation of Visual Data


Computers interpret data using several different techniques, all of which are expressed in the form of lengthy and complex algebraic equations significantly beyond the grasp of the average layperson. Suffice to say these equations are very different depending on the strategic method of visual interpretation. One of the primary techniques for interpretation of visual data is using a large model base. At the core of this method of visual determination is simple geometry stored as a large-scale database; the computer can make a comparison using these base templates. A collection of geometric shapes and patterns can be recognized by the computer. The obvious weakness of this interpretation is that if the shape is not seen in the database again, the computer will be unable to interpret the data.








Another common but entirely different approach is the edge matching technique, which detects edges in both a template and an image while comparing the visual input and template data with a predetermined range of possibilities and variations. Edge matching has the advantage of being more adaptive than simple model-based comparisons, based on the fact that it can operate within a larger field of variables.


A different approach to visual data interpretation is the use of gray scale matching, adept at sensing variations in illumination using pattern maps as opposed to geometric maps to form a basis for comparison. Gray scale matching has found a lot of use in webcam recognition software-based advertising campaigns, allowing magazine readers to show an image to their webcams interacting with a specific website, initiating special results when the website software is showing the image of their advertisements.








Other Visual Corellation Methods


Though edge matching and large model bases are the most popular methods of interpreting visual data, a number of less common approaches to the problem exists. The process of a divide and conquer search uses image cell-based data sets and advanced algebraic equations in order to ignore confusing or irrelevant data and make simplified generalizations about the visual data. A divide and conquer search-based visual and rotation would be helpful in the application of quality control, where defects and other errors do not meet a uniform searchable pattern (for example, noticing flaws in the manufacture of textiles or in fractures of ceramic objects). Another method for visual data interpretation is that of gradient matching, in essence a simplified form of gray scale matching that uses light levels instead of preset colors to determine the rough shape of an object. The primary advantage to gradient matching is that more of the data collected can be used for the correlation process, thereby reducing processor loads. In practical applications, gradient matching gives a more accurate image interpretation than the more basic gray scale matching.


Overall Image Analysis


More to visual data interpretation exists than the various methods and subsequent equations and database. Also take into account the "brain" of the interpreting computer. Software forms the basis for the rudimentary decision-making skills a device will use upon receiving visual stimuli. Programmers determine which choices the device will make based on a predetermined series of scenarios. For something such as a small robot, programmers need to give the device programming to prevent it from colliding with objects. The most basic method of command is that of an "if, then" programming sequence; the basic premise of such a statement is that "if" the computer is presented with a series of specific variables (visual data indicating a nearby obstacle, for example), "then" take a predetermined course of action (such as changing direction). An "if, then" statement can also be used in industrial production situations where a supervising technician must be notified if an anomaly is detected.

Ear coning is also called ear candling and is done by inserting a hollow candle made of linen or cotton and beeswax into the ears and allowing smoke from the candle to travel into the ears and back out. The belief is that the smoke pulls toxins as well as excess wax out of the ears and improves health and hearing. The opinion of ear coning's safety and effectiveness varies.


Procedure


Practitioners of ear coning say the process removes excess wax from the ears and eustachian tubes, which are canals that link the pharynx to the middle ear. During coning, you are asked to lay on your side while a long, cone-shaped beeswax candle is inserted into your upward facing ear and then lit. As the candle burns, it produces a sticky, powdery smoke that travels into the ear. Advocates feel the treatment is cleansing, therapeutic and hygienic.


Ear Coning Advocacy








Those who support ear coning and candling say the procedure is safe and effective when done properly. They insist coning to be a natural alternative to chemical solutions and other conventional methods of cleaning, like metal scraping tools.


Advocates also argue that the traditional procedure of rinsing the ears with saline or water can be damaging. They say it can cause problems stemming from bacterial infection from trapped fluid.


Safety Concerns of Ear Coning by Conventional Medicine


Many people who have ear coning say they get relief from hearing and ear problems as well as a sense of general well-being after a treatment. But there are also reports of injuries or problems resulting from having ear candling done.


There are no controlled studies that indicate ear coning is safe or effective, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has denounced the practice and has banned four Canadian companies from importing the candles to the U.S.


A study done by the Spokane Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic in 1996 demonstrated that no wax was removed during a limited clinical trial of eight patients. In addition some of the eight trial participants actually had wax deposited in their ears from the candles. The study also surveyed 122 ear doctors who reported 21 ear injuries resulting from ear candling. The study's conclusion was that ear coning had no benefit and was dangerous.


Safe Ear Cleaning


The external part of the ears can be cleaned with a soft wash cloth but you should never stick anything into the ear canal.

Side Effects Of Chelation

The body slowly excretes several heavy metals. Their toxicity increases over the years as they accumulate. A therapy called chelation has been developed to speed the removal of such metals. The therapy comes with possible temporary side effects---for example, pain around the injection area and temporary depletion of essential minerals, especially calcium. These side effects are temporary, especially if monitored by a qualified doctor, and should be weighed against the side effects of leaving the metal to accumulate.


Purpose of Chelation


The purpose of a chelating agent is to bind to toxic metals in the body, such as mercury and lead, so they can be excreted in the urine and stool. Such metals are not readily excreted, but instead accumulate in the body over the course of years. This is the reason that toxic metals concentrate at the top of the food chain (e.g., large fish like tuna and swordfish). Predators store the metals ingested by their prey, which in turn had accumulated the metals ingested by their own prey. Extending the argument, many people need heavy-metal removal due to the fish in their diet. Also, some people lack the genes for normal heavy metal excretion.


Chelating Agents


Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) and 2,3-dimercapto-propane-sulfonate (DMPS) are FDA-approved medication to remove lead from children. DMPS is also effective for mercury and other toxic metals. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is used more for lead poisoning than for mercury. It is also used to reduce iron levels after repeated blood transfusions.


Side Effects


Because of the seriousness of heavy-dose side effects, chelation therapy entails several sessions of low doses---even stretching up to a year. Side effects are serious enough to warrant replacing mercury fillings with ceramic before attempting chelation. The reason for replacing the fillings first is to see if heavy metal levels can be lowered enough without having to take on any side effects, and fillings' replenishing mercury levels would just increase the number of sessions required.


EDTA


The most common side effect of intravenously injected EDTA is a burning spot around the site of injection. EDTA may decrease levels of certain vitamins and minerals; supplements of vitamins and minerals after each treatment are advisable. Vitamin and mineral levels should be monitored during and after a chelation session, especially to avoid diminished calcium levels. The CDC has reported deaths from chelation therapy as a result of chelation-induced calcium deficiency. Doctors should, therefore, monitor calcium levels regularly throughout treatment.


DMSA


DMSA side effects include gas, diarrhea, bloating, and GI discomfort, because of its sulfur content.


DMSA can pull useful metals out of the body, such as zinc and copper. Therefore, a zinc/copper supplement should be taken each day of treatment. (It is important that the zinc:copper ratio be 10:1.)


DMPS








DMPS is more powerful, and therefore more dangerous, than DMSA. It can pull useful metals out of the body, such as zinc and copper. And it can dump enough mercury into the kidneys and liver to permanently damage them. Since there are less dangerous alternatives to mercury removal, DMPS should not be used without a very compelling reason, for example its superior ability to chelate arsenic.


Comparison


In assessing the side effects of chelation, a comparison is needed to keep the side effects in perspective. The side effects of leaving the chelated heavy metals in place are far greater.








An 18-year longitudinal study called "The Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey" (NHANES III) found that any level of lead over 2 micrograms per deciliter in the blood caused dramatic increases in heart disease and stroke. In fact, the risk of heart attack increased 150 percent.

Types of Aquatic Therapists


A variety of medical professionals may obtain hydrotherapy certification, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, massage practitioners, recreational therapists and kinesiotherapists. The Aquatic Resources Network states, however, that a medical professional may only use aquatic therapy in ways that relate to her field. For instance, a physical therapist must only use hydrotherapy to complement goals in a client's physical therapy sessions.


Certification


Aquatic therapy certification is required to practice hydrotherapy; however, the individual must also be a legally qualified healthcare provider. The Therapeutic Recreation Directory states that aquatic therapy certification covers topics such as simple water principles, the basics of science and movement, professional responsibility and possible legal issues. Professionals can obtain this aquatic education in workshops, training seminars and classes, which may include Internet courses.

Not all aquatic therapy certifications are equal. Before pursuing the certification process, ensure the hydrotherapy certification program has accreditation by making sure the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE) lists the program on the Accredited Certification Programs list.

Issues With Hmos

Health Maintenance Organization, or HMO, plans are the typically the least expensive of full coverage medical insurance plans. The low premiums are a result of tightly managed care. This managing of care often leads to issues and dissatisfaction with members of the HMO plan and the providers within the HMO network. HMO managed care principles include a gatekeeper model, pre-authorization requirements, provider network and closely reviewed decisions made on services requested and received. These practices, while contributing to cost containment and lower premiums, lead to issues and members seeking alternative plans and providers opting out of network participation.


Gatekeeper/Referral Model








The gatekeeper model is the hallmark of the HMO plan. HMO plans require their members to first utilize a primary care physician for all services. A referral must be obtained from the primary care physician prior to visiting a specialist. Many HMO members take issue with this process as they find it a laborious and bureaucratic practice that increases the length of time to see a specialist.


Pre-authorization Requirement


Most outpatient or inpatient procedures, surgeries, hospital stays, specialty medication and other services require pre-authorization from the HMO. The patient is responsible for obtaining authorization prior to accessing these services. If services are not pre-authorized, payment is often denied and the patient is responsible for the bill. This leads to many claims issues from both patients and the providers that service them.


Provider Network Issues


Participating in an HMO plan means that the member is limited to using providers, hospitals and pharmacies within a HMO network. The HMO contracts with providers to participate in their network. HMO members can only visit providers within the HMO network or the out-of-network doctor visits and associated services will not be covered by the insurance plan. This presents an issue in rural areas or if the member is not satisfied with the providers in the HMO network. In addition, providers may be dissatisfied with the typically lower network reimbursement fees which dictate the fees they will receive for each billed service.


Denial of Care


Requests for medical services are closely reviewed by a team of clinical professionals that work for the HMO. HMO members take issue with this as they feel this creates a conflict of interest as these decisions may be biased in favor of the HMO and based on dollars and not necessity of care. Though there is often an appeal process, care decisions are ultimately held by the HMO or a third party contracted by the HMO.

Lavender essential oil, lovingly referred to as the "universal oil" is one of the most versatile of all oils. Not only is lavender used in perfumes and incense, it can also be used for headaches, insomnia, to ease childbirth, soothe burns, heal bruises and even to treat cuts and minor wounds.


Instructions


1. Make sure that you purchase a lavender oil which is effective for healing. There are many varieties of lavender; however, only Lavendula augustifolia, Lavendula spica and Lavendula stoechas are known for their healing qualities. Other varieties are often used in perfumes, body lotions and incense, but are not therapeutically useful.


2. Perform a skin patch test before you use lavender oil for cuts or wounds. Lavender is one of the few essential oils consider safe for topical use in an undiluted form; however, each person reacts differently. Place a single drop of oil on the skin of your inner upper arm and watch for reactions for at least 24 hours. If there is no reaction, you can safely use the full strength oil for cuts, bruises and other remedies.


3. Dilute lavender oil with olive or jojoba oil if you notice minor skin reactions. Mixing 1 part lavender to 10 parts of another oil will help to ensure that you do not experience itching, dryness or redness; however, it is important to be aware that diluted lavender will not be as effected as it's full strength form.


4. Apply a drop of lavender essential oil to fresh cuts to help stop bleeding, making lavender perform for those tiny razor cuts as well. Apply lavender to the wound two or three times daily to keep the area clean and prevent infection. Continue to use lavender daily even after the cut has closed to help regenerate skin cells, promote faster healing and reduce scar formation.

Folk Remedies For Worms

Worms in the human digestive tract can be an embarrassing and annoying problem. Pinworms are the most common parasitic worms to affect humans. You can become infected by touching bedding, food or other items that have been infested with pinworm eggs. The main symptoms of infection are pain and itching in the anal area. Common household items can be used to help kill and eradicate pinworms from the body.


Options


Garlic has powerful antibiotic properties and is also considered toxic to pinworms. Mash up several peeled garlic cloves to make a paste. Mix with about 1 tsp. of petroleum jelly and apply externally to the anal area before bedtime. While the petroleum jelly suffocates the eggs from the pinworms as they exit the body, the toxicity of the garlic will kill them. The petroleum jelly also has the added bonus of easing external itching.


Shredded coconut along with castor oil can help to kill pinworms. Shred or shave enough coconut to make 1 tbsp. Take 1 tbsp. in the morning. Three hours later, take 1 tbsp. of castor oil. Repeat once a day until symptoms subside. The castor oil works as a laxative to expel the worms from the body, while the coconut kills the worms and eggs.








Pickled ginger is an effective tool in eliminating worms from the body. Paul Schulick, author of "Ginger: Common Spice and Wonder Drug," says that the root commonly served with sushi is very effective against some of most dangerous parasites in the world. Look for pickled ginger in oriental grocery stores.


Pumpkin seeds along with pumpkin extracts can help in the expulsion of worms and intestinal parasites. Simply chew about one ounce of dried pumpkin seed daily to rid your body of worms.


While some folk remedies may help to alleviate or eliminate worms in your digestive tract, it is important to consult your physician if you continue to be bothered with this problem. Likewise, it is critical to wash all bedding, towels and clothing that have come in contact with the infected individual. Wash in very hot water to kill the worm eggs.

5. Reflect upon and develop a hobby you have always wanted to pursue. Perhaps you wish to build model trains, or write the great American novel. It is important to occupy your time with something positive. Staying busy takes your mind away from the pain to a certain degree.

Calm Someone Down Who Is Dangerously Emotionally Distressed

Help to deescalate someone who is dangerously emotionally distressed.


When someone you know becomes dangerously emotionally distressed, it's critical that he receives the proper attention needed for him to "deescalate." "Deescalation" is the process of calming down, or bringing down, a person from a heightened state of rage, panic, depression or mania so that he can once again think clearly. Once someone becomes so emotionally distressed that he's dangerous to himself or others, you must get him professional help and attempt to calm him in a safe manner.


Instructions


1. Approach him slowly. Don't make sudden movements or rush over to him; otherwise, your actions may be interpreted as a threat. Creep slowly toward him, making sure he can see you.


2. Wear a calm facial expression. According to the "PEAK Development Resources for Nursing Assistants," it's important to effect a calm demeanor so that the person doesn't become more excited and potentially combative. Excitement and anxiety can be contagious, so if you give the impression that you're hyped up, the person in distress may become more excited.


3. Use a calm, low voice when you speak. Your voice and tone should sound soothing, yet stern and attentive. Again, if the person in distress senses that you're wound-up, he won't be able to calm down.


4. Maintain eye contact. Try to get him to lock eyes with you, which can help him understand that you care about him and what he's going through. Hold eye contact without staring aggressively, which is intimidating.








5. Don't plant yourself in front of him. He may interpret this as a threat or challenge, and act out violently toward you. Instead, keep a safe distance and position yourself at an angle, which is less intimidating/threatening.


6. Say something supportive. Begin by using his name. For example, "Johnny, I understand how upset you must feel right now." Your goal is to try to calm him down by having a conversation and encouraging him to open up and and see reason.


7. Respond to him calmly if he engages in a conversation. Avoid arguing with what he tells you. If he makes wild accusations or says things that are untrue, don't belittle him by telling him he's wrong. Instead, offer solutions and help.


8. Don't threaten him by saying you're going to call the police or tell his family about this incident. This will agitate him more, and your goal is to minimize the chances of triggering a dangerous response.


9. Remind him of the great things in his life. Talk about positive things; help him to realize why he needs to deescalate and seek help.


10. Comfort him once he's calmed down. After such an emotional experience, he may begin weeping and feel overwhelmed with guilt and fear. Be supportive, but continue to maintain your calm demeanor.
